Elephant Hills, Khao Sok National Park – Thailand’s First Luxury Tent Jungle Camps

A unique nature and animal experience in the Thai rainforest

Elephant Hills includes two camps, the Elephant Camp and the Lake Camp. Located in Khao Sok National Park, one of Thailand’s most beautiful and lush rainforests, they represent an utterly unique travel destination. Blending the concept of safari camps in African national parks with the tropical nature experience in southern Thailand’s Khao Sok National Park, Elephant Hills allows you to explore the fascinating beauty of the Thai rainforest while getting up close with Asian elephants. They offer award-winning 2–4-day all-inclusive nature experience tours in and around Khao Sok National Park, with luxurious accommodation in tents.

The Elephant Camp is situated at the edge of the national park, while the Lake Camp is nestled in the midst of Cheow Larn Lake, a 165 km² lake in the heart of Khao Sok. All Elephant Hills tours start at the Elephant Camp, where the first night is spent. The Lake Camp can be visited for a day trip or an overnight stay.

All tours >>

Elephant Camp

The swimming pool with terrace and marvellous jungle views is the perfect place to relax and unwind.

Luxurious Glamping Tents

The luxurious tents, made of waterproof canvas, blend harmoniously with the surroundings, offering a comfortable retreat after a day of adventure.

In addition to a warm welcome, the tents offer all the amenities you would find in a regular 4-star hotel room. A cozy bed, a fan, kettle, hairdryer, shower, and toilet ensure a pleasant stay in the middle of the jungle. The furniture is handcrafted by the camp’s own craftsmen.

Elephant Safari

From the first day, there is an opportunity to interact with the majestic animals in a responsible environment. You can feed them, watch them bathing, and learn more about their lifestyle – all under the guidance of experienced caretakers.

Helping to feed the elephants is a wonderful way to spend some time with them and learn more about them.

Elephant riding is deliberately avoided.

Activities

Apart from elephants, Elephant Hills offers a variety of other activities, including boat trips on Cheow Lan Lake, jungle hikes, and encounters with local communities. You can immerse yourself in the local culture and experience the diversity of Thai nature up close.

Canoe Safari on Sok River

This canoe safari, despite the rain, was a truly special experience. Experiencing the tranquillity and beauty of nature is genuinely unique. With a bit of luck, you might even spot some wild animals.

It is Raining in the Rainforest

Khao Sok is one of the wettest places in Thailand, so rain can occur at any time. However, the sun can also shine at any time of the year! Normally, rain occurs in heavy showers for one or two hours, and thanks to temperatures above 25°C, it is a pleasant experience. Elephant Hills activities are specially designed for rainy days, making these adventure tours possible all year round.

Jungle Restaurant

In the open-air restaurant in the heart of the jungle, delicious buffet-style breakfast, lunch, and dinner dishes are served, with cooking stations. Everything was mouthwatering.

Before dinner you can enjoy nature films, dance, or cooking demonstrations.

The young dancers come from the surrounding schools, allowing you to learn about the local culture, and students have the opportunity to meet guests from other countries and practice English. Elephant Hills Camp is one of the largest employers in the Khao Sok region.

Cooking Classes

A special highlight is the cooking classes in the evenings. Try and learn to cook delicious Thai food.

Lake/Rainforest Camp – Floating Bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake

After a visit to a famous dam and a boat trip on Cheow Lan Lake, you reach Elephant Hills’ floating bungalows.

After a tasty lunch, you can swim in the lake, go for a jungle hike, or take a canoe tour.

Mangrove Tour and Lunch on a Burmese Junk

Jungle-Safari

You can go on a tour through the jungle directly from the camp. At the end of the tour, a delicious lunch prepared over an open fire in the heart of the jungle awaits.

Social Engagement & Animal Welfare

Conclusion

The Elephant Hills Camps are more than just accommodation; they offer the opportunity to discover the treasures of Thailand’s nature while simultaneously contributing to the protection and preservation of wildlife. A visit here promises an unforgettable experience that enriches the spirit and touches the heart. We can only recommend it to a limited extent for honeymooners, as you may be unlucky, ending up in a group with noisy children (as we did). But it is still a wonderful adventure for those seeking a unique and wild nature experience away from mass tourism. Experiencing the gentle giants up close is, of course, the special highlight.

Back at Rayavadee, Krabi, Thailand – Luxurious Pavilions, Monkeys & Dream Pool at Railay Beach

A Tropical Paradise for Humans & Animals

After having visited the paradisiacal 5-star resort with three beaches, a huge pool, and four restaurants surrounded by unbelievably beautiful nature and enchanting monkeys back in 2014, we returned there in May of this year. And the resort is still just as fantastic as it was back then. The magnificent pool set against the rocky backdrop remains incredibly impressive, and the monkeys are even more approachable.

Rayavadee is nestled in Krabi, in one of the most stunning areas in southern Thailand, right on the famous and beloved Railay Beach. Located on the edge of the Krabi Marine National Park and surrounded by impressive limestone cliffs, this is the perfect place to experience breathtaking sunsets over the turquoise Andaman Sea.

Rayavadee can only be accessed by water. The hotel’s own high-speed yacht shuttle picks you up at Nong Nuch Pier in Krabi and takes you to Nammao Beach in Railay West (a climbing mecca for rock climbers from all over the world). During low tide, a rustic tractor ride takes you to the shore.

The resort is nestled amidst three beaches – Phra Nang Beach in the south, Nammao Beach in Railay West, and Railay Beach in the east.

This luxurious beach resort covers 26 hectares of lush tropical landscapes and is part of the “Leading Hotels of the World” collection. There are more than 120 species of plants and tropical trees and more than 250 species of ferns and herbaceous trees to discover.

Infinity Pool with a Sea View

Once again, it was the spectacular infinity pool that drew us back to this idyllic resort. The view of the sea and the age-old rock formations is truly unique and incredibly beautiful. This time, the monkeys even frolicked in the trees around the pool.

The southern langur, recognizable by its white markings, is a conspicuous species that loves tropical rainforests. Here at Rayavadee, they seem to thrive, and you can observe them every day. At the same time every day, the entire troop ventures through the trees around the pool, feasting on leaves, buds, flowers, and bark. Many young ones swing around the branches like they are on a playground. You could watch them for hours.

The smallest langur babies have a yellow-orange fur until they are four months old.

With a bit of luck, you can also spot monitor lizards and hornbills in the vast tropical garden. With a self-guided garden walk map, you can explore the diversity of the area’s flora and fauna.

Luxurious Pavilions

Among giant coconut palms and fish ponds, you can stay in one of the 94 luxurious pavilions. These round pavilions are sustainably constructed from natural wood, covered with thatched roofs, and blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. All pavilions consist of two floors, with a living room on the lower floor and an elegantly designed bedroom with a bathroom on the upper floor.

Some pavilions even come with their own garden and private pool. There are also huge beach villas and family pavilions with two bedrooms.

Pool Pavillion

This time, we stayed in a 115 square metre Pool Pavilion with a large private pool (3 x 8 meters) and sun loungers. Nestled within a lush tropical garden, this Pool Pavilion offers a wonderfully secluded experience.

Inside the spacious pavilion, you will find artistic decor featuring bamboo, polished wood, vibrant fabrics, and handcrafted details. The bathroom, complete with a freestanding bathtub, is elegantly designed and provides luxurious care products, including mosquito repellent.

The evening lighting and overall ambiance are simply incredibly romantic. And do not miss out on taking an evening dip in the huge pool while watching the sunset.

RESTAURANTS

RAITALAY TERRACE (Railay Beach)

This open-plan restaurant is located right on the beach, adjacent to the infinity pool, offering breathtaking views of Railay Beach. It specializes in Mediterranean and International cuisine. During the day, you can even have a light snack brought to the poolside. And with a refreshing cocktail in hand, this is the perfect spot to enjoy the magnificent sunset.

KRUA PHRANANG (Phra Nang Beach)

This is the resort’s romantic Thai restaurant. Here, you can enjoy classic Thai dishes and specialties right by the sea, including curries, salads, soups, seafood, and freshly caught fish.

THE GROTTO (Phranang Beach)

The Grotto restaurant is one of the most famous in all of Thailand, nestled beneath an ancient limestone cliff on the edge of the stunning Phranang Beach. Here you can enjoy a leisurely lunch, or a twilight set menu dinner while watching the sunset.

This incredibly beautiful and special place is perfect for marriage proposals, romantic dinners, or even weddings.

RAYA DINING (Nammao Beach)

The main restaurant, Raya Dining, located at the foot of the immense cliffs at Nammao Beach, serves a diverse breakfast buffet, and on certain days, also Afternoon Tea.

RAYAVADEE SPA

The Rayavadee Spa offers ancient Thai healing traditions and a philosophy of well-being that unites body, mind, and soul. You can choose from revitalizing facial treatments, scrubs, energizing body wraps, soothing massages, and a variety of salon treatments.

ROYAL SIAM MASSAGE

A vigorous and firm massage designed to reinvigorate the senses, employing a blend of Thai and other Asian healing techniques. During the treatment, elbow pressure is used to untie knots on the tense areas while stimulating blended oil relieves tension and relaxes the body.

The treatments in this unique setting are simply unparalleled!

RAYAVADEE SHOP

In the shop, you can find some beautiful things to take home with you. You can also purchase the wonderful spa products from the pavilions here. The scrubs, soaps, and mosquito sprays are simply terrific!

However, there has been a change here. The small shopping area used to be rather modest. But over the past few years, it has developed into a true party and shopping hotspot. So, where it used to be rather quiet, there now is a lot going on during the day and into the night.

CONCLUSION

We have now been to Rayavadee for the second time. The resort possesses a truly special magic. The atmosphere here is incredibly romantic. The time spent in the pool, in our lovely Pool Pavilion, and on this unique beach – should never end. Witnessing the stunning natural beauty and observing the adorable monkeys – is just unique. Add to that the delicious food at the wonderful restaurants right by the sea – magnificent. There is so much to discover and experience here. We thoroughly enjoyed it once again!

The Slate, Phuket, Thailand – Romantic Design Hotel with Industrial Charm

BLACK GINGER, REBAR & COQOON SPA – SIMPLY SPECTACULAR!

The work of Bill Bensley has fascinated me for a long time. He is one of Southeast Asia’s leading architects, designers and artists, and he has given many hotels (such as the Maia Seychelles) his opulent and creative touch. The historic and stylish luxury resort, The Slate, located amidst a lush tropical forest on Phuket’s beautiful Nai Yang Beach, exudes an unmistakable charm and is a real eye-catcher.

“My biggest inspiration for The Slate was to create a place inspired by the rich history of tin mining on the island. I said to my daughter: It can be modern, but it has to reflect Phuket.” – Inhaber Prakaikaew Na-Ranong

The creative design of this tropical oasis pays homage to the past of tin mining and an expression of Phuket’s avant-garde spirit. Industrial chic blends harmoniously with traditional Thai design, all thanks to Bill Bensley’s keen sense of lighting and integrating structures into their natural surroundings.

The sprawling oasis with 184-rooms features 5 restaurants & bars serving Thai and international cuisine (BLACK GINGER, TIN MINE, RIVET & REBAR, UNDERGROUND & POOLSIDE, TONGKAH TIN SYNDICATE), three outdoor pools (two exclusively for adults), the SHADES GALLERY in the lobby, the HELICONIA FLOWER GALLERY, THE STOCKROOM boutique, the TIN BOX KID’S CLUB, and the spectacular and award-winning COQOON SPA.

“Design without history means missing out on something. We celebrate the history of Phuket. Every corner is a conversation.” – Inhaber Prakaikaew Na-Ranong

POOLS & DREAMSCAPE

The Family-Friendly Lagoon Pool

The large lagoon pool with countless sun loungers, tropical palm trees, waterfalls and rustic rocks, creates a wonderful natural backdrop. Children can also enjoy various play elements, while the UNDERGROUND CAFÉ & POOLSIDE serves healthy salads, cold-pressed juices, and fresh fruits by the poolside.

“From the design to the concept to the cuisine, our philosophy is to embrace all things local.”

ADULTS-ONLY POOL WITH SWIM-UP BAR

Another pool exclusively for adults offers plenty of space for socializing with its swim-up bar.

ADULTS ONLY INFINITY-POOL

A serene infinity pool, reserved for adults, treats guests to a view of the resort’s well-manicured grounds.

Rooms, Suites & Pool Villas

Every detail has been carefully considered in the rooms (offering six different room categories), Pearl Shell Suites (spacious suites with one or two bedrooms), and private Pool Pavilions. Local handcrafted furniture, artistic faucets and sinks, historical fans from the 1920s, exposed beams, blackened metals, and polished concrete are combined with Thai silk and rattan. Additionally, private pools, Jacuzzis, saunas, and personal massage tables provide an added touch of luxury.

PEARL SHELL SUITE

This 132 square meter elegant designer suite features numerous artworks, extravagant wooden and metal elements, cozy and stylish furniture, a unique bathtub, and two massage tables. The spacious balcony offers a wonderful view of the tropical rainforest.

“This was the rebirth of the first resort in Phuket, formerly Pearl Village. It’s still a work in progress, as resorts have to be. A really good resort goes through major facelifts every five years.” – Bill Bensley

Private Pool Villas

Hidden in the gardens of the rainforest, the Pool Villas offer a particularly romantic retreat with sun loungers, daybeds, a private pool, bar, dining area, whirlpool, spa, sauna, steam room, and a 24-hour butler service (Villas 2006 and 2007 are the most private).

FANCIFUL FOOD, DREAMLIKE DINING

The diverse restaurants & bars at The Slate take guests on a journey into Phuket’s culinary culture.

“ENJOY GOURMET DISHES IN SPECTACULAR SURROUNDINGS AND CULINARY MASTERPIECES THAT NURTURE AND INSPIRE.”

Breakfast at Tin Mine

The TIN MINE restaurant serves international delicacies, Thai specialties, and a sumptuous breakfast buffet with street-food cooking stations, all within a tasteful and industrial ambiance.

Cocktails at Rebar

Above the RIVET restaurant, you will find the REBAR. Here, DJs play chill tunes while stainless steel tables rest on a floor made of old railway sleepers. In addition, snacks like seafood tapas, Black Angus filet, and wines from the New World, along with unique cocktails, are served.

We were lucky to experience the talented singer, Bonnie, live. What a night!

In another bar – the sports bar TONGKAH TIN SYNDICATE – rare whiskeys and perfectly crafted cocktails are served.

Romantic Dinner at Black Ginger

In the magical BLACK GINGER restaurant, surrounded by a lotus pond and reachable only by candle-lit raft, Thai cuisine is served in a traditional mansion with pointed roofs, creating an incredibly romantic atmosphere, especially in the evening. It is a modern masterpiece of Thai art, certified by the Michelin Guide in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. The luxurious restaurant and the azure-lit bar are highly popular, and the gourmet and avant-garde dishes are so delicious that reservations are highly recommended.

“True Tastes of Phuket”

Cross the water for an unforgettable experience of Oriental spices …

Exquisite flavours that are delicately balanced …

Prepared with freshest local ingredients …

Carefully selected by our chef …

Served with Black Ginger´s unique twist …

Local Thai cuisine that will enchant …

BLACK GINGER MENU >>

COQOON SPA

For a spectacular experience, indulge in a spa treatment in “The Nest” – a private treatment room with an impressive woven structure. These unique treatment rooms hang like bird’s nests in the branches of a centuries-old banyan tree.

And it is not just the natural atmosphere that is impressive; the massages are incredibly relaxing and top-notch!

KRU PRECISION Wellness is an independent regenerative retreat at The Slate, offering a unique range of health concepts, such as the KRU diagnosis program with a comprehensive check-up and screening session, as well as the KRU Signature VitaDrip, a weight loss and liver detox program.

THE STOCKROOM

Thanks to the hotel’s stylish in-house boutique, guests can take home designer pieces from the rooms, porcelain from the restaurants, skincare products, and much more.

BEACH

A vast beach is within easy reach of the resort. Here, you will find seafood restaurants, cafes, and in the high season, market stalls and massage salons.

CONCLUSION

The Slate is the perfect place to unwind after a long flight or relax before your departure while indulging in delicious cuisine. It is a delightful tropical and romantic oasis amidst the bustling atmosphere. We were particularly enchanted by the incredibly magical Black Ginger restaurant and the cool Rebar, with its industrial lounge style and live music. The Slate is not just a resort; it has a fascinating story to tell and offers endless opportunities for exploration. Everywhere you turn, you will find creative and spectacular designs, as well as many opportunities to cool off in the hot weather. Our visit here was incredibly exciting and captivating. This tropical and stylish paradise is truly worth a visit!

AVANI + Riverside Bangkok Hotel, Thailand – Lifestyle hotel with spectacular Rooftop Bar

Fascinating Panoramic View of Bangkok

Our path once again led us to Thailand. First, we stayed at the Anantara Riverside Bangkok and then we stayed at the AVANI Riverside Bangkok. The AVANI Riverside opened in September 2016 and is situated directly behind the Anantara Riverside. Both hotels belong to the Minor hotel group, and they both have fantastic views of the Chao Phraya River and the skyline of Bangkok.

The design hotel AVANI Riverside has 248 rooms and suites, fourrestaurants and bars, the AVANI spa, the AVANIFIT and a rooftop infinity pool with magnificent views.

Located right on the river, you can enjoy a quiet and secluded stay, yet it is close to the city and its colorful bustle. By shuttle boat it is only a few minutes to the Skytrain- Station “Taksin Saphan” and the night market “Asiatique.”

The Riverside Plaza, a small mall with shops, restaurants and cafes, is locatedon the lower floors of the hotel.

Modern City Hotel with Style

The stylish lobby is located on the eleventh floor and connects the reception area, the lounge, the Skyline Restaurant, the Long bar andthe Pantry at Avani, a designer deli, with each other.

Rooftop Infinity Pool

The enormous infinity pool offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the city.

Rooms & Suites

All rooms and suites at the AVANI Riverside Bangkok offer stunning river views. The rooms and suites are modern, and each is equippedwith a mobile phone, air conditioning, minibar, safe, LED TV, IPTV system, free Wi-Fi, open bathroom with a rain shower, bathrobes and slippers.

AVANI River View Junior Suite

From the 62 square meter cornersuite, you can soak up the great river views through the enormouswindow directly from your bed or the bathtub.   The rooms are modern, bright and tastefully decorated.

Unfortunately, due to the height, one cannot open the window.

The bathroom is very stylish and has marvelousviews of Bangkok.

Restaurant Skyline

The Skyline Restaurant offers Thai food, international dishes and a breakfastbuffet.

Attitude Restaurant with Rooftop Bar

The stylish Attitude restaurant with its rooftop bar is located on the 26th floor.

The bar is the perfect spot to enjoy a sunset cocktail with delicious tapas and chilled music in the background!

With the tapas menu, the show kitchen and the bartender’s cocktail creations your gastronomical well-being is taken care of.

The view is quite simply to die for! You can spend hours here. Coincidentally, there was a small firework show on one of the boats on the river in the evening we stayed there. I can only imagine that New Year’s Eve will be spectacular here!

Spa & Fitness

The AVANISPA and AVANIFIT are locatedon the upper two floors. In the morning, you can attend yoga classes on the rooftop terrace close to the pool.

Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort, Thailand – Jungle Adventures & Elephants

Wild Luxury & magical experiences in northern Thailand

To hear the happy trumpeting of the elephants in the morning and experience these gentle giants up close, these are the memories burned into our hearts forever. The picturesque setting and the unforgettable view over the border triangle merely isfantastic! Northern Thailand with its warm-hearted people, its culture and the elephants is a once in a lifetime experience.

The luxurious Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort is situated in the middle of the jungle in northern Thailand at the heart of the Golden Triangle. You have awe-inspiringviews overlooking the Mekong River and the border with Myanmar and Laos. The resort offers unique elephant encounters, superb Thai food, loving service, a beautiful spa and a host of options for exploring the area.

LIFE IS A JOURNEY.

Of course, the highlight is the private award-winning elephant camp with 30 rescued Asian elephants.

“We believe that in an ideal world, all elephants would be wild and it would not be necessary to talk about working with elephants at all.” – Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation

There are many different ways you can bond with these gentle giants. There are jungle walks, watching them bathing in the river, getting acquainted with the art of the mahouts (elephant keepers) or spend some time in the elephant camp feeding the elephants.

John Roberts together with Anantara founded the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF) with its scientific research program in 2003. Ithas enabled the mahouts and their elephants to live a dignified life again. Traditionally, many elephants in Thailand lived in captivity as working animals and were usually not treated well and even abused.

“Happy mahouts keep happy elephants.”

The elephants are mainly rescuedfrom the street or illegal logging camps. Injured animals are cared for and nursed back to health. Not only the elephants are taken care of, butthe mahouts with their families can also live in the camp. About 60 people now live in the Mahout Village and benefit from this project. They are encouraged to treat the elephants well and send their children to school. If at all possible, the goal remains to release the elephants.

Noble retreat in Lanna design in the border triangle

Dark teak floors, elegant furniture, silk, local art, andcarvings create a cozy, charming atmosphere and paytribute to the ancient Lanna Kingdom (Land of a Million Rice Fields) in northern Thailand.

Upon arrival, you are spoiledwith a small welcome massage and handmade bracelets.

In addition to the all-inclusive package (3 meals a day, unlimited drinks, minibar, internet andairport transfers), The Discovery Package also offers an elephant, wellness, cooking or cultural activity every day.

Infinity pool overlooking the jungle

The beautiful infinity pool with hot tub offers uninterrupted views of the Mekong River and the 65-acre jungle.

During the day you can order delicious dishes and fresh drinks at the pool while enjoying the beautiful view.

Three Country View Room

The Anantara Golden Triangle combines Thai architecture and décor of international standard in a refined colonial style. The 55 rooms and suites are decoratedin warm colors with Thai textiles, dark teak furniture, oversized terrazzo bathtubs and works of art from China and Thailand.

The highlight is the view from the balcony sofa over Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.

You will find elephants everywhere in the room, even the elephant shaped biscuits!

The atmosphere is incredibly romantic, especially in the evening!

Three Country View (Family) Suites

The family suites are, of course, a bit bigger and super comfortable.

Walking with Giants

To be so close to these majestic mammals is an unforgettable experience. By feeding them bananas and sugar cane, you first familiarize yourself with them and get to know them.

With “Walking with Giants” you can join the mahouts and their elephants on their daily walk in the jungle. Since they are fedat the camp, they need to go for daily walks. Otherwise, they pick up weight.

Although many of them, probably have experienced mistreatment, they are loving and gentle. Amazing!

The walk through the jungle is at a leisurely pace. Whenever the elephants feel like it, they nibble on the branches, and there are snacks like bananas and sunflower seeds in between.

Elephants like to be touched, especially behind their ears.

When they get to the river, they are like little kids, splashing about and they do not want to get out of the water!

At the end of the walk, the elephants are showered, andthe mahouts bring them back to the camp. The tour lasts about one and a half hours.

Mahout Experience

The Mahout experience is inspiring. You discover the strong bond between the elephants and their keepers and get a glimpse into the everyday life of a mahout. It includes an introduction to the Thai commands to enable you to guide these intelligent and gentle beings yourself.

Riding on elephants is controversial. Responsible riding on the neck of these gigantic 3-ton mammals can be comparedto an ant sitting on them. However, several people riding on the back of an elephant should be avoided.

When you visit the elephants for the second time, they are already much more familiar with you. One of them will stroll towards you, and it is as if they are saying: “Hi, here you are again!” Brilliant!

This tour takes you a little further through the jungle and even through the resort.

At the Mahout Village, you can buy some beautiful, home-made objects and support the mahout families directly. The women have even started a small silk production.

We found the tours amazingand exciting. Spending time with the mahouts and these gentle giants is a unique experience!

Restaurants & Bar

The main restaurant, the Elephant Bar and the Opium Terrace, offers a stunning panoramic view. The service in every restaurant is very attentive and loving!

Sala Mae Nam

For breakfast, there is an international and Thai buffet with a vast selection.

The view from the terrace isimpressive. During the dry season, you can even watch the elephants from here.

For lunch and dinner, Sale Mae Nam offers delicious Thai delicacies. Highly recommended are the northern Thai dishes; they are simple, but creative with exotic spices and fresh ingredients from the garden.

The black rice and curries are a realtaste sensation.

“Geang Yod Mapraw Gai Bai Cha Plu
Northern style chicken curry with young coconut tip and wild betel leaves”

Opium Terrace

The Opium Terrace is situated next to the Elephant Bar and serves simple dishes and fantastic cocktails.

In the evening, it has a very romantic atmosphere, and you can also order food from any of the other restaurants and enjoy it here.

Elephant Bar

The Elephant Bar has a historic atmosphere reminiscent of a hunting lodge. Aperitifs are served by the open fireplace or on the private terrace.

Baan Dhalia

The romantic Baan Dhalia Restaurant offers Italian cuisine and has an impressive wine list. Merging the rustic Thai jungle with Tuscan ambiance, it has a unique romantic ambience!

“Parmesan spaghetti, prepared tableside in a whole Grand Padano wheel and your choice of pasta sauce – black truffle cream or pesto trapanese with Parma ham”

If you would like something truly spectacular, try the spaghetti with truffles from the Parmesan wheel or order the Crêpes Suzette.

Dining by Design

If you are looking for peace and privacy, there is “Dining by Design.” You can dine in the beautiful, quiet landscape and if you would like to, even enjoy the company of elephants.

Spa by Nature

The Chiang Rai Spa has five stunning teak suites with their own steam room and outdoor baths overlooking the Mekong Valley.

The treatments are based on century-old northern Thai wellness traditions and include local and medicinal ingredients. You can choose between Elemis spa and aromatherapy treatments, massages, facials, body wraps and scrubs, and the unique Lanna Experience.

The ambience and the massages are wonderfully relaxing!

Activities

There is so much to do here. You can visit Chiang Rai and the neighboring countries of Myanmar and Laos with a longtail boat, do yoga classes, ride a mountain bike, plant trees, go trekking, visit the Opium Museum or participate in a cooking class.

Spice Spoons
With the cooking class “Spice Spoons” you get great insight into Thai cuisine. After a tour of the bustling local market, you learn what makes Thai food so delicious. We participated in the course in Anantara Chiang Mai, and it was really great and incredibly tasty.

Opium Museum
In the Opium Museum, you can learn a lot about the history of the opium trade in northern Thailand and the origins of opium. It should be fascinating. Unfortunately, we did not visit the museum.

Wat Rong Khun
Wat Rong Khun, better known as the White Temple, is located between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. It is an incredibly spectacular temple.

Loy Krathong
The traditional Thai festival, also known as the Festival of Lights, takes place annually on the evening of the full moon (11-13 November 2019) in Chiang Mai. It should also be beautiful near Chiang Saen. Further information >>

Conclusion

The Anantara Golden Triangle is extraordinary! And no, it is not just the fantastic views and the adorable elephants, but the extraordinarily loving and caring employees. The people here in the north are very kind and attentive. They ensure that your stay here is exceptional. The elephant encounters as so up close and personal and a definite bucket list item! We made memories that we will treasure forever – wonderful and unforgettable! When we said goodbye, we received a lantern with farewell wishes from the staff. Hopefully, our wish will come true!

Amatara Wellness Resort, Phuket, Thailand – Healing Holiday & Wellness Cuisine

Relax and Renew – Spa Revive Retreat & “Chi Nei Tsang” Organ Massage

Yes, traveling to faraway countries changes you. You are never quite the same person as when you left. It has been our experience every time we went to Africa and now once again when we visited Amatara, the only destination spa in Phuket, for three days.

Not only are the wholefood cuisine and spa treatments exceptional. The wellness concept as a whole contributes to an overall awareness, where you as an individual re-assess the way you live. You become more aware; you want to eat healthier, move more and live more consciously. As a result, you align body, mind and soul. At least, this was my experience. The icing on the cake was the “Chi Nei Tsang” organ massage by the Japanese healer, Mariko, an extraordinary experience!

The award-winning 5-star Amatara Wellness Resort is located in the south of Phuket on a private estate in a beautiful quiet location on Cape Panwa. Apart from various wellness and health programs, loving service, organic wellness cuisine, beautiful suites, pavilion or pool villas, it offers stunning views of the Andaman Sea.

A luxury limousine will pick you up from the airport in Phuket. As you will travel across the island, fresh juices, an intro video, and more movies are available to shorten the trip. In heavy traffic, it might take an hour and a half until you finally arrive at the resort. But there is so much to see.

Arriving at Amatara, we were welcomed with fragrant orchids, delicious tea, and immediately introduced to our 3-day wellness program.

The all-inclusive program offers a wealth of treatments to guide you on your wellness journey.

Wipa Nareerak is the fantastic general manager at the resort. The whole team is very hard-working and ensures your stay is an extraordinary one.

In ancient Sanskrit, “amata” refers to the quality of “immortality”, or an endlessness that withstands the passage of time.

Refreshments with sea views

The infinity pool has an incredible sea view and is very spacious.

Here you can relax with birdsong in the background, swim or take in the majestic view.

What a surprise when the spa therapists came by and indulged us with a neck massage!

Tropical nights with the sound of the ocean

All 105 suites and villas at the resort are very spacious, have beautiful sea views, balconies and possibly also a terrace and a private pool.

Bay View Pool Villa

The luxurious 150 square meter pool villas offer a private pool with sea or bay views, a massive bathroom with a round bath, butler service, and a few other extras, for example, minibar, afternoon tea, etc.

There are also smaller Pool Pavilions with views of the bay or the sea.

Sea View Suite

Our 70 square meter Sea View Suite had a nice balcony overlooking the pool and sea. Unfortunately, it did not have a pool, but that’s okay because the large pool is almost right on your doorstep and you are busy with treatments in the spa most of the time.

Every day a nice selection of nuts and fragrant teas awaited us in our suite.

Amatara Spa

At Amatara, you have the choice between seven all-inclusive wellness packages, respectively for 3, 5 or 7 days. These include Detox, Bespoke Wellness, Revive Spa, Weight Management, Active, Yoga and the brand new, Sleep Optimization package. The goal is purification, renewal, and detoxification of body and mind with therapies, healthy diet and exercise. The 2,000 square meter spa has eight treatment rooms as well as double treatment suites, saunas andsteam rooms, a fitness center, Pilates studio, yoga pavilion, anda spa library as a relaxation zone.

Info & Prices

Spa Revive Retreat

You are spoiled for choice, but I chose the Spa Revive package. It consists of various spa treatments, a Thai Hammam experience, and some training sessions. Supplemented with healthy cuisine, the perfect combination.

Spa Revive Retreat
• Accommodation per selected category
• Airport transfers
• 3 healthy cuisine meals per day (a la carte) or a set detox menu in The Retreat.
• Individual wellness consultation (60 min)
• Departure consultation (30 min)
• Blood pressure check up
• Physical analysis (30 min)
• 1 Thai Hammam journey (105 min)

3-day program (additional)

  • 1 Thai Hammam (105 minutes)
  • 1 Amatara signature organic facial (60 minutes)
  • 1 Foot reflexology treatment (60 minutes)
  • 1 Manicure (60 minutes)
  • 1 Pedicure (60 minutes)
  • 1 Signature Amatara massage (90 minutes)
  • Daily yoga class

I love the scent of Frangipanis, and their smell surrounds the spa!

You complete quite a detailed questionnaire before arrival, and once you have checked-in, you will be taken directly to your wellness consultation. The wellness packages are tailored to each guests’ individual needs and desired goals. Nadia, the Wellness Consultant, gave us many helpful tips.

Thai Hammam

The Thai Hammam was designed exclusively for Amatara and offers a unique spa experience.Turkish and Moroccan bathing practices are combined with Thai spa therapies to create a luxurious experience.

After indulging in a traditional sauna, rain shower, Thai herbal steam, Moroccan soap massage, exfoliation with authentic Hammam Kessa gloves, therapeutic and thermal mud therapy, Himalayan salt cave relaxation, Amatara massage, and herbal tea, you are completely relaxed, and your skin is deeply cleansed and silky soft.

This one of a kind Thai Hamam treatment is an integral part of all the inclusive wellness packages.

Another highlight of the wellness program is the facial treatment with 100% organic products. A facial treatment that starts with a foot ritual can only be good.

The Amatara signature massage is extraordinary. It starts with a complete banana leaf body wrap. The massage itself was extremely relaxing and with some gentle stretching elements also exceptional.

The manicure and pedicurewere the perfect additions to our all-roundrenewal.

Chi Nei Tsang and Bodywork

The crowning glory was the “Chi Nei Tsang” organ massage. I had the incredible privilege to be treated by the Japanese healer, Mariko Nakaki, who just happened to be in Amatara for a month. How lucky can you be! Mariko has been traveling the world for 12 years and has treated more than 5,000 people.

A combination of Chi Nei Tsang internal organ massage, fascia release technique, and cranio sacral therapy.

“Chi Nei Tsang” literally means working the energy of the internal organs and the art of this deep massage technique is based on the Taoist concept of Five Elements. It isdesigned to relax the internal organs where unresolved, negative emotions manifest themselves and can cause mental and physical dis-ease. The massage works directly on the energy of the internal organs of the abdomen, removing blockages, purifying and transforming the negative energy. The organs shift back to their original positions and the Qi, or life energy can flow freely again. The performance of the organs is improved, and physical and mental well-being enhanced.

Experiencing Mariko’s gift up close was a truly unforgettable experience! Mariko released the tight-set feeling (hardening) in my stomach. It was a poignant and unique healing experience.

Everyone can enjoy the benefits of a Chi Nei Tsang body massage as it is included in the five day package. Mariko will soon be traveling to Europe.

Yoga, Pilates, Fitness …

In this picturesque setting with its stunning sea views, you can practice yoga, meditation and breathing exercises with great teachers in the morning and the evening.

In addition to the courses already included in the wellness programs, you could also do other courses, such as Muah Thai.

The yoga teachers are brilliant! They left me inspired to continue the journey at home!

Culinary delights & wellness cuisine

“The Retreat”

Apart from the main restaurant, spa guests also have their ‘own’restaurant serving lighter, healthy cuisine in a beautiful quiet ambiance.

Breakfast and dinner are available à la carte. There are healthy ones: vegetable and fruit juices, salads, egg dishes, fruit and much more. I found the organic coffee with rice milk, particularly delicious.

In the evening, there is a wide variety of healthy organic dishes including raw food and smoothies.

Andi, the very likeable German chef, has only been in Amatara for a few weeks but has already introduced many new dishes to the main restaurant’s menu. The Retreat’s menus next in line. You can also enjoy his great and unusual cuisine at “The Grill”.

“The Restaurant ”

“The Pool Terrace”

Western and Asian snacks, fresh juices and cocktails are served throughout the day in a relaxed atmosphere by the pool.

“Sun & Moon”

End the day with cocktails at the roof terrace in the evening.

“The Grill”

The freshest fish and the best meat cuts in a variety of Thai and international styles are offered as a 3-course menu.

To ensure wellness guests are not excluded, healthy dishes are always on offer.

“Beach Table”

If you want to, you can also dine on the small beach with a great view of the ocean. Unfortunately, the beach is not so suitable for swimming.

This tropical paradise is the ideal spot to get married at and spend your honeymoon.

Cempedak Private Island, Bintan, Indonesia – The Romantic & Luxurious Secret Tip for Couples

Crusoe Luxury Hideaway with Loving Service and Sustainable Design

We have the feeling that we visited an almost undiscovered gem! Barefoot luxury with lots of privacy in natural surroundings on a private island in the middle of the South China Sea – Pure luxury and romance – far away from everyday stress!

At Cempedak you can enjoy life – stay in a gorgeous bamboo villa, relax at your plunge pool, stroll through the rainforest, snorkel in the sea, do yoga on your private deck, and enjoy freshly caught fish and tropical cocktails by candlelight in the evenings.

It takes about two and a half hours by catamaran ferry, car and private boat from Singapore to Bintan Island, a tropical paradise on the East Coast of Indonesia. With its crystal clear warm waters, coral reefs, white sandy beaches, granite cliffs and a jungle of chirping cicadas, you feel like you are on a small Robinson Crusoe Island.

Pulau Bintan belongs to the Riau Islands group, which is part of Sumatra and lies south of Singapore – a province populated mainly by farmers and fishermen. Australian banker hotelier Andrew Dixon bought his first private island resort, Nikoi in 2007 with a few friends. In 2009 he founded The Island Foundation, to help the communities of the Riau Islands with Nikoi’s income by improving their income, health and education.

Andrew Dixon then bought the nearby Cempedak Island in 2011 and began with the construction of this affiliated hotel in 2014. A great deal of emphasis was placed on cultural sensitivity, local design, excellent service and pure luxury. It was designed by the renowned Balinese architect Miles Humphreys from New Zealand.

Cempedak, named after a tree, has 20 spectacular Balinese bamboo designed pool villas and is intended for adults or children over 16. It is the perfect hideaway for couples and honeymooners! If you travel with children, we recommend the family-friendly Nikoi Island!

The journey starts at the ferry terminal near the Singapore airport. Arriving on Bintan, you are picked up by the Cempedak team directly from the ferry and taken to the VIP lounge. While waiting with a cold drink in hand, the staff takes care of your luggage. Then by car, you travel across the island to Cempedak and Nikoi.

Life on the island seems simple, quaint and untouched, but you can see many new homes are being built and the island is changing. Undoubtedly thanks to tourism and The Island Foundation.

Once we arrived at Cempedak, we were greeted by the beaming staff. It rained on our arrival, and the staff formed a roof with umbrellas to keep us dry. Such a special gesture!

Luxury in Harmony with Nature – the Future of Sustainable Tourism

The villas with their crescent shaped roofs made of local alang-alang grass, look almost like large coconuts or shells and blend gracefully into the natural surroundings while at the same time offer protection from the elements. The resort was built by local workers using driftwood and bamboo from Bali and lava rock from Java. It only employs Indonesian staff.

Bamboo is sustainable, and there is no need for air conditioners due to the open construction combined with the high ceilings. On this 17 hectare eco-friendly resort, there is no air conditioning, hair dryers, mini bar fridges, televisions and no room keys.

To check-in, we did not go to the reception desk, but straight to lunch. A feast of fantastic, delicious and typical Indonesian dishes awaited us. So, if possible, take the 11:10 ferry.

The staff is charming, hard-working and always have a smile on their faces. You can feel that they enjoy their work and also have time to chat.  The service is excellent and, above all, caring.

Dodo Bar

Apart from the bar in the restaurant and a bar next to the pool, there also is the exceptional four-story thatched roof Dodo bar made of Ijuk (black arenga palm fibers) build on a giant rock.

The Dodo Bar is the perfect spot to enjoy the beautiful sunsets, cocktail in hand.

Impressive bamboo villas with pool and ocean views

There are only two kinds of villas – the slightly higher ones with ocean views and the villas with direct beach access. Each comprises more than 100 square meters and a total of 1,600 square meters of indoor and outdoor living space.

Our Villa 15 was right on the sunset side of the beach.

Thanks to the intelligent design and the open construction, there is always a gentle ocean breeze keeping the spectacular bamboo villa cool. We did not miss air conditioning at all, on the contrary, we always turn the air conditioning off when we arrive somewhere.

In the open basement, there is a large lounge area with a spacious terrace, bar, sun loungers and a yin and yang pool overlooking the sea.

In the mornings, you can watch some Komodo dragons on the beach. Sometimes they even come to the front of the villa and take a bath in the overflow of the pool.

The furniture is made of recycled teak, very tasteful and has a chic rustic charm.

A sweeping staircase leads to the open bedroom and the bathroom with sea views.

The wall of hinged glass, bamboo doors can be completely pushed aside.

There is Wi-Fi if you would like to check e-mails and an iPad to contact your host and order in-room cocktails. Very handy indeed!

Villa 18 is probably the most popular. It has a great sea view, is located next to the spa and near the mangrove beach. With a little luck, you can observe an otter family here in the mornings.

Spa

The awe-inspiring spa on the rocks has three open treatment pavilions with magnificent sea views.

We did not treat ourselves to massages here, but the ones we received at the sister hotel, Nikoi were great! And the atmosphere itself is impressive.

Boathouse & Pool

The Boathouse offers all sorts of water sports and excursions, for example, cultural tours, snorkel trips, and island hopping. There is also a bar, a small shop and a large infinity pool. It is also the best place to swim in the sea at high tide.

Every evening you get a message on your villa’s iPad with a list of the excursions that you can join the next day.

Dinner /restaurant

Lunch and dinner are served as three-course meals. The menu is planned in advance, and the kitchen team happily accommodates any dietary requirements.

The fresh cuisine is an exciting mix of local Indonesian dishes with international finesse and Western cuisine. The ingredients are almost entirely either from the hotel’s garden or from local markets and small traders. Grilled fish, seafood, vegetables and lots of fresh fruit are available.

For the sake of the environment, the menus are only available on iPad and not printed.

The food is delicious and shows that there are great chefs at work here!

Breakfast by the ocean

Such a view at breakfast is stunning and with the attentive service, the morning is perfect!

In addition to fresh fruit, smoothies and Indonesian cake specialties, you also have the choice of two hot dishes. The black sticky rice with coconut milk and mango was excellent!

Nature Walk

Every morning you can participate in a Nature Walk. An interesting experience.

You can find 50 bird species, including hornbills, eagles and kingfishers, 150 butterfly species, a family of sea otters and even the endangered pangolin on Cempedak.

Sustainability

In addition to bamboo, there are recycled teak furniture, solar-powered hot water, efficient DC motors to power ceiling fans and pool pumps, homegrown food minimizing packaging waste, organic composting and the replanting of indigenous trees.

The flowers at the bottom of this picture indicate the quality of the wastewater, which is naturally cleaned here.

The Island Foundation

Founded by Andrew Dixon, the charity is responsible for training teachers, running learning centers, developing a bilingual curriculum, and organizing community activities. In cooperation with locals, an education and literacy program was launched to help sustain the communities in the Riau Archipelago.   By educating the next generation, permanent change is created.

Training teachers. Inspiring young minds. Building the next generation.

Team

The team, including general manager Marjan, who has been running Nikoi for ten years, is fantastic! The service is much more unique and attentive than at a regular hotel. The staff is well taken care of and happy, and as a guest, you can feel that. We had so much fun with them, and they made us feel very welcome during our entire stay.

All 200 employees, at Nikoi and Cempedak, except for one, are Indonesian. Many of them have been here from the beginning. With a maximum of 40 guests at any given time on Cempedak Island, there is plenty of staff.

Conclusion

For those who dream of a tropical holiday in harmony with nature, falling asleep with the sound of the ocean and Cicadas – this is heaven on earth. We loved it! The natural scenery and the bamboo villas are breathtaking. The open design is phenomenal. The loving and very attentive service of the staff is truly unique. It was even better than our experience in the Seychelles 6 years ago. Unfortunately, a lot has changed there due to the increasing mass tourism. Here everything still exists in perfect harmony! Add to this, the environmental protection program and the fact that the local population is supported, and you have a winning combination. A holiday with so much added value!

Chena Huts by Uga Escapes, Yala, Sri Lanka – Wilderness, Luxury, Leopards & Ocean (+ Video)

Asia meets Africa – A Safari Lodge with WOW factor

Directly on the ocean, listening to the roaring waves, splashing in the villa’s own pool, enjoying the best curry and maybe even seeing elephants pass by… this is Chena Huts!

Chena Huts by Uga Escapes is situated on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka and was definitely the highlight of our Sri Lanka tour! This small luxury boutique hotel is located directly on the ocean, has a restaurant, pool, spa and 14 villas each with their own private pool.

Chena Huts belongs to the renowned Sri Lankan group Uga Escapes and is the first luxury safari lodge in Sri Lanka. It directly borders Yala National Park, the oldest national park in Sri Lanka.

We were welcomed warmly and greeted with the hotel’s unique welcome ritual: Each guest places their country’s flag next to the “welcome” written in their home language. So you immediately know where all the guests are from.

Pavilions

The 14 luxurious detached guest cabins, each 105 square meters in size, are evenly distributed in the coastal jungle and offer plenty of privacy, peace and comfort.

Wooden walkways connect the cabins with the restaurant, the swimming pool and the spa.

The spacious “huts” perfectly blend into their natural surroundings. Each cabin is hidden in the dense thorn tree jungle, has a terrace with a 5m private pool and views of the wilderness, the lake landscape or the ocean.

The African safari style pavilions are decorated with rustic lamps, warm colors and lots of wood. Very comfortable and modern!

The focal point is the comfortable bed with stylish fan that is shaped like a lotus blossom just like the Uga Escapes logo.

Behind the bed is an open bathroom with a freestanding bathtub and very stylish wash basins. It has the feel of a safari lodge in South Africa.

I especially liked the African kerosene lanterns! So beautiful!

There is also a 42 “LED TV, a mini bar, a variety of tea and a small Nespresso coffee machine.

Beach

Unfortunately, you cannot swim in the ocean here, due to strong currents, but just being at the beach, is already wonderful!

moniquedecaro-chena-huts-004.jpg

And since there are no fences, you can also encounter some wild animals. Not too worry though, the rangers look after guests!

Interview with Manager Roshan De Silva

General Manager Roshan De Silva comes from Sri Lanka and runs the hotel with a lot of heart. He is also a strong supporter of nature conservation and animal welfare!

Sri Lanka has an ingenious water storage system that was created thousands of years ago by its kings. But if it rains too little, even these lakes run dry. When we visited Sri Lanka in January, it has unfortunately, not rained as much as it actually should have.  The lakes were almost dry. That is also why General Manager Roshan is so committed to animal welfare and nature conservation.  He tries to fill the lakes by buying water with the help of donations ($ 50 for 1 ton of water) as this is the only way to ensure that the animals will have water.

moniquedecaro-chena-huts.jpg

Pool

Although each villa has its own pool, there is also a large pool.

No filter – everything turns this pink in the early evening!

Restaurant “Basses” & Bar

Based on the principle: simply sit back and enjoy everything is included at Chena Huts – breakfast, lunch, dinner, soft drinks, cocktails and all other drinks.

The restaurant is named after the lighthouse, which is very close by.

Fruit and vegetables come from a nearby farm and the rice is planted in Ulagalla, another Uga Escapes hotel. It is all very fresh and really healthy!

You have the choice of either dining inside in an air-conditioned area or enjoy the ocean views outside.

There even is a pizza oven. A highlight for children – they get to bake their own pizza.

Fresh fruit juice for breakfast and lunch and delicious cocktails for dinner are available from the guys at the bar.

Breakfast

The à la carte breakfast is delicious! You try to taste as many dishes as possible and tend to eat much more than you actually can.

Lunch

We also met Holger, the German Chef at Uga Escapes Hotels. He commutes between the Uga hotels and is responsible for the respective kitchens there. And he does an excellent job – everything was so appetizing. Nice and spicy, but very tasty! Of course, there are also dishes that are not spicy at all!

Dinner

It is so romantic here in the evening!

After a great aperitif a delicious 4-course menu is served!

On special occasions, it is also possible to enjoy a romantic dinner for two right on the beach.

Safari at Yala National Park

Of course you will not see as many animals as in Africa when on safari in Yala National Park, but there are plenty of elephants, buffaloes, crocodiles, monkeys and birds. And the chances of seeing a leopard are quite high in the national park with the highest leopard population density in the world!

Safaris start in the afternoon or very early in the morning.

We have never seen so many kingfishers as here in Sri Lanka. They are simply beautiful!

Our ranger Vidupa and rider Suresh tried their best to find us a leopard. Even the monkeys helped when they raised their alarm.

There he was – the leopard! Although far away – but still, simply seeing this majestic animal from afar is already an experience!

Spa

The spa offers massages and beauty treatments. Unfortunately, we did not have enough time to indulge in any treatments, but it looked amazing! Spa Brochüre

Cooking Class

The cuisine in Sri Lanka is very delicious, spicy and fresh. Our Cooking Class with Holger was a great opportunity to be introduced to some of the local cooking skills.

I love the Dhal Curry (lentil curry)! And we were shown exactly how to cook dhal and chicken curry. The spicy versions! If you prefer a milder curry, it can be served with coconut milk or yoghurt.

In Sri Lanka, spices, such as curry, chilli and so on are first fried to release their full flavour. A very important ingredient in the local cuisine is curry leaves. Unfortunately it is not freshly available in Germany. These leaves give Sri Lankan and Indian dishes their distinctive taste!

Recipes: Dhal Curry | Chicken Curry

Of course, dishes that are prepared during class can also be enjoyed afterwards!

Conclusion

Chena Huts is a beautiful secluded oasis of tranquility – right on the ocean. The staff is so friendly and the service very personal (which is, unfortunately, quite rare in Sri Lanka). We really felt right at home in this small jewel of Uga Escapes. It was hard to leave this beautiful and exclusive hotel. The pavilions are very stylish, cozy and luxurious. The food is delicious and the all-inclusive concept is great! In our opinion, it was the nicest hotel in Sri Lanka!

Rooms: 14 Pavilions each with their own pool
Flight duration: 12 hour flight from Germany via Dubai to Colombo Airport
Transfer: 250km from Colombo Airport. It is either a 5 hour taxi drive or you can opt to take a domestic flight from Colombo to Mawella Lagoon Airport, close to the town of Tangalle.
Check-in / Check-out Times: 14:00 / 11:00
Air Temperature: 8 to 27.8° Celsius
Water Temperature: 27 – 29° Celsius

Pimalai Resort & Spa, Thailand – the luxurious Boutique Hotel on the island Koh Lanta

The perfect hotel for couples, a romantic beach wedding or heavenly honeymoons

Koh Lanta – one of the hidden treasures of Thailand and one of the most beautiful honeymoon spots of the country. We visited in February the breath-taking tropical island off the coast of Krabi in the Andaman Sea.

moniquedecaro-2208568

After a flight of one hour and a half from Bangkok, another 50 minutes by taxi and another 45 minutes by speedboat southbound you arrive at the remote Ba Kan Tiang Bay. It is seen from afar the beautiful villas that are embedded in the rain forest and spread over the rolling hills. Welcome to Paradise!

moniquedecaro-2208575moniquedecaro_beautiful_placesmoniquedecaro_beautiful_placesmoniquedecaro_beautiful_places

The five star Hotel Pimalai Resort & Spa was built in 2001 and it belongs to the „Small Luxury Hotels of the World”. It is the most luxurious resort of the island and it is located at a nearly 900m long brightly white sandy beach with turquoise waters. The old Sanskrit words Pimon and Alai, that make up the hotel’s name mean: place of purity, on a little place in heaven. Here you can enjoy the life under coco palms and in lush tropical vegetation on a nearly untouched island.

moniquedecaro_beautiful_placesmoniquedecaro_beautiful_places

Rooms

The resort has 121 rooms, suites and villas and is separated into two parts by a rarely trafficked street. The Deluxe rooms, the suites and the beach villas are located on the lower part. The upper part (comfortably accessible by buggy) is reserved for the pool villas.

We stayed in a spacious 48sq Deluxe room with balcony. The rooms are furnished in Thai style with a lot of teak and bamboo and they are spread into two-storied units. From the balcony we had a good ocean view including the sunset.

The 70sq Bayfront Deluxe Rooms near the beach offer a great view from the balcony and the bathroom over the bay. The Pavilion Suites (110sq) with their living room and bedroom have a terrace and a private garden with open air shower.

Perfect for the honeymoon: The spacious One-Bedroom-Pool-Villas (204 sq) with gorgeous sea view which are located further up the hills.  They have a separate living room, kitchen unit, outdoor Thai Sala and a terrace. The highlight is the 22sq swimming pool. By their sloping site (60m over sea level) they offer a spectacular view over the Andaman Sea.

Pools

Next to the nearly unspoiled beach the hotel has two spectacular infinity pool and a whirl pool. We loved the infinity pool high up near the Seven Seas Restaurant! You can have yourself brought there by buggy and then you can stay the whole day and relax. The view is just breath-taking. With a cocktail in your hand you can admire the sunset in a very romantic way.

Restaurants

You can have yourself culinarily got spoiled in five restaurants and four bars. Each restaurant has its own style and an incomparable ambience. The main restaurant „Baan Pimalai“ serves Thai and international specialties. In the „Spice´n Rice“ restaurant you can have breakfast and in the evening you can get everything from Pad Thai to Fried Rice in a relaxed and romantic atmosphere. Far up over the bay in „The Seven Seas Restaurant & Wine Lounge“ with spectacular view you can have international cuisine and noble wines. In the „Rak Talay Beach Bar“, the beach restaurant you can sit snuggly with your feet in the sand. The food is delicious!

moniquedecaro_beautiful_placesmoniquedecaro_beautiful_places

Wedding

Nearly every day you can see a wedding at the beach. Everything is being lovingly and individually prepared for the couple according their wishes. From fresh and casual to exclusive and elegant with an own banquet table on the beach. Of course there are some hotel guests and tourists at the beach, but the area is being spaciously enclosed so that you have your own private atmosphere. The marriage ceremony at the beach (Buddhist or Christian) takes place in the evening at sunset. If we had not married on the Seychelles, this hotel would have probably been our alternative choice for Thailand. The isle and the hotel are just perfect for marriages. A nearly deserted beach, wonderful nature and a lot of privacy. And in the Seven Seas Restaurant high up the hills with great bay view you can spend a wonderful evening with your guests.

moniquedecaro_beautiful_placesmoniquedecaro_beautiful_placesmoniquedecaro_beautiful_placesmoniquedecaro_beautiful_placesmoniquedecaro_beautiful_places

Spa

You can spend relaxing moments in the rewarded Pimalai Spa, which is located in the middle of an exotic garden in the jungle. In the pretty thatched roofed pavilions made of teak, bamboo and boulder you can have aroma therapies and other relaxing wellness applications. We had the Pimalai Signature Massage, which is a picture-perfect dream, rally wonderfully relaxing! Besides there is a fitness center, tennis courts, beach volley, wind surfing, sail boats, canoe, bike rentals and a PADI dive school (from November to April).

Tipps

Shopping and Thai-Food
In the main village Saladan, in the north of the island, there are Thai restaurants and numerous shops that invite you to stay.

moniquedecaro-7170Bar
At the beach you can walk to some relaxing restaurants and bars. The “Why Not Bar” directly at the beach offers delicious cocktails, fire shows and live music. The employees are good humored, cool guys. This is already worth the fun!  And who can sing, can rock the bar together with the band.

moniquedecaro-7171

And when you go the other direction you can have a cosy evening in the “Same same but different”.

moniquedecaro_beautiful_places

Nature
In the Ease of the island there are vast mangrove forests which can be visited by kayak, by longtail boat or in a tour. Take some bananas and feed the monkeys. They come and get them in your boat. But you’d better stay away from the restaurant “Thung Yen Pheng Sea Food”. It is great with its fresh fish but we have had an upset stomach. But by this we could experience the exquisite medical service at the hotel. The nurse (24h service) has taken good care of us and did a perfect job. We received medicine and the next day we felt a lot better.

moniquedecaro_beautiful_placesmoniquedecaro_beautiful_places

Snorkeling and diving
The offshore islands offer perfect snorkeling and diving areals. Some day trips are being offered, so that you can discover the islands around Koh Lanta.

Transfer
If you stay for at least three night the transfer from the airport is included.

Recommendation
It is better you stay 5-7 nights so that you can better discover the island. Once you setteled down, you do not want to leave any more!
