Mango House, Seychelles – Design, Luxury & Gourmet Cuisine in the South of Mahé

An intimate retreat on the Indian Ocean

Mango House is located in the bay of Anse Aux Poules Bleue. Here in the southwestern corner of Mahé, you can feel right at home and enjoy a luxurious holiday. The fine boutique resort has a lot of character, exceptional and authentic service, and supports local artisans and suppliers. In addition, it offers tranquillity with magnificent views, and boasts a unique design in Seychelles chic style, featuring many local artworks, a private beach, three pools, irresistible food in three restaurants, and the best cocktails in two bars.

The former family home of Milanese fashion photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri was taken over by the Hilton Group and transformed into a fine boutique resort with only 41 rooms. It opened in 2020 and is now part of LXR Hotels & Resorts, Hilton’s indie luxury brand. The house still retains the affectionate nickname created by the famous photographer 50 years ago.

THE HOUSE

Mango House is not only popular among guests, but also among islanders. And when you enter the chic lobby, you will know why. The stylish beach house design and the inviting, open view of the sea convey a great island feeling and you will feel relaxed immediately.

The colourful art of Seychellois artist Alyssa Adams can be found in many places, and in several rooms of Mango House. The tropically bright kimonos in the bathroom, the chic beach bags, the face masks, and also the painting in the lobby convey a unique charm.

“PEACE & SERENITY” AT THE POOL

At the main pool, you can relax, enjoy snacks and drinks, and take in the magnificent ocean view.

BEACH LIFE

The beach is not very large, but simply beautiful! And you can snorkel directly from here or simply enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings.

ROOMS, SUITES & BEACHFRONT VILLAS

Mango House has 11 types of rooms, suites, two-storey villas, and beachfront residences with private pools  – perfect for couples, families or even groups. All rooms and suites offer modern luxury with a fresh sea breeze, a touch of local art and they all have balconies or terraces that offer fantastic views of the bay.

For families, the Bay House with three bedrooms and a pool or the Ocean House also with three bedrooms with a pool is perfect.

OCEAN HOUSE

Neutral colours with tasteful furniture, cosy rattan, warm wood tones, and colourful beach-style accents with pretty wall art were combined in the Ocean House suites with living and sleeping areas.

Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, you have a magnificent view of the tropical garden and the bay.

And the extremely chic four-poster bed also offers a fantastic sea view.

The bathrooms are incredibly spacious and offer everything you need. And the “After Sun” bath experience was wonderfully nurturing and most welcome.

The suites also include butler service. The lovely Jemmy was our contact for all matters.

BAY HOUSE VILLAS

These rooms offer a splendid view and a chic pool, with refreshing cocktails from the “SOLEY” bar right outside the door.

CLIFF HOUSE

In the Cliff House with a private pool, you can live somewhat secluded and majestically on a granite rock with a magnificent view.

FOR THE PALATE

MUSE RESTAURANT

The Muse restaurant serves a wonderful á la carte breakfast in the morning and the finest Italian cuisine is served for lunch and dinner in a brasserie-style ambiance.

Breakfast

The breakfast at Muse is not only brilliant because of its wonderful sea view, but also because the service is fantastic. You can simply sit back, relax and enjoy the food. The lovely staff constantly bring delicious treats to your table. You can pick and choose whatever you feel like eating. In addition, freshly prepared à la carte breakfast dishes are also available.

This breakfast experience is truly special and the most unique for us so far!

Dinner

The Italian cuisine at Muse is a tribute to the former owner and is also very popular with guests from outside.

MOUTYA RESTAURANT

Authentic Creole delicacies with exotic spices are served in a wonderfully romantic atmosphere at this small seaside restaurant.

AZIDO RESTAURANT

Japanese-inspired dishes such as Wagyu beef Sukiyaki and the Azido menu with Nigiri, Sashimi and Moriawase are served with a unique view of the ocean.

KOKOYE BAR

At Kokoye, the Indian-Seychellois cocktail bar with the largest gin collection in the Seychelles, upscale cocktails (such as the gin tea martini and the delicious five-spice rum sour) are served in a unique tropical atmosphere. The stylish bar, palm wallpaper, and decor are reminiscent of a time gone by.

SOLEY BAR

Named after the daily journey of the sun, this bar offers refreshments right by the pool.

FOR BODY & MIND

ANPE SPA

The Anpe Spa (Anpe = “peace” in Creole) offers individual treatments using products that harness the healing power of local plants and natural resources.

The treatment suites offer a unique view of the Indian Ocean, and the massages provide a wonderful relaxation experience. Simply delightful!

ACTIVITIES

COOKING CLASS

We love to get to know the local cuisine better when on holiday by taking a cooking class. Here at Mango House, we prepared Creole octopus curry. Divine! And of course, the best part is, that you can eat the dish after cooking it. So delicious!

OCTOPUS CURRY

Ingredients

  • Boiled octopus (cut in small pieces)
  • Chopped onions
  • Ginger garlic paste
  • Curry leaves
  • Thyme
  • Curry powder
  • Lemon juice
  • Egg plant (cut in small pieces and fried)
  • Thick coconut milk
  • Salt / pepper to taste and fresh chili for desired heat

Method

  • Sauce onion, garlic, ginger paste, curry leaves in a pot then add curry powder and turmeric and cook until the spices are caramelized. Add the fried egg plant, thyme and the octopus with a little bit of water. Cook for about 4 to 8 min. Then add the thick coconut milk with salt and pepper and chili for taste and cook for another 5 min.
  • Add lemon juice and fresh chili, coriander leaves to finish
  • Serve with a bowl of hot rice and relish of your choice

WASSER SPORTS

The beautiful bay can be explored while snorkelling or with canoes and kayaks.

FOR NATURE

SUSTAINABILITY

The LXR resorts also strive for sustainability. For example, the drinking water is delivered in refillable glass bottles, and the organic and plant-based bath products come from the local skincare brand Belliche, and the floral hand-painted ceramics from Seyramics on Mahé. There is an organic garden and a recycling program that includes turning coffee capsules into fragrances, among other things. All coffee varieties are fair trade, and 90% of the rum (such as the popular Takamaka) and gin are locally sourced.

CONCLUSION

We thought the Mango House was brilliant! The relaxed atmosphere, the stylish design, the diverse cuisine, the super-friendly staff, and chic rooms and suites make for a wonderful seaside getaway. You can really tell that the staff are only happy when the guests are happy. Above all, the attentive and personal service makes the stay here very special. Our absolute highlight was the staff and the à la carte breakfast – one of the best breakfast experiences we have had so far. Highly recommended!

Rovos Rail, South Africa – A Glamorous Journey from Pretoria to Cape Town with the Most Luxurious Train of Africa

The Pride of Africa – Luxury, Romance & Extravagant Elegance of a Bygone Era

There is something very nostalgic about traveling in a sleeping car on a train. When l was small, I often traveled with my mother by train overnight, and I always loved falling asleep to the gentle swaying of the train and its rattling sounds! The compartments of the old trains with their leather seats and soft lighting were so comfortable and, in the evening, cozy and very romantic. Nowadays, I find traveling by train merely practical and everything but comfortable – I actually try to avoid train journeys. But to travel with the luxurious Rovos Rail with its antique steam locomotive has always been a dream of mine!

Rovos Rail is a family-run private railway company that was founded in 1989 by Rohan Vos, an avid lover of old trains. Since then, he has been offering world-class travel experiences in lovingly restored trains for a maximum of 72 passengers in 36 luxuriously appointed suites.

“The Most Luxurious Train in the World”

In a series of train journeys lasting from 48 hours to a month, the Pride of Africa links some of Africa’s greatest destinations from Cape Town, at the tip of Africa, to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, from scenic splendors as diverse as the game reserves of Mpumalanga to the Victoria Falls, from the desert landscapes in Namibia and the stark beauty of the Karoo to the lush cane fields of KwaZulu-Natal.

Unfortunately, the historic steam locomotives are not allowed to travel further than 70 km from Pretoria – it is such a pity! The coaches can also be hauled by diesel or electric locomotives.

New Route: From July 2019, Rovos will be adding the Trail of Two Oceans journey from Angola to Tanzania to its repertoire. The new 15-day expedition will travel through Tanzania, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. It will include a game visit to the Selous Reserve, a 2-night safari in the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia and a tour of Lubumbashi in the DRC.

Rovos Rail Station

All trains depart from and arrive at the private station in Capital Park, Pretoria – a historic, restored railway station in the Colonial style, where the coaches and steam locomotives are also maintained. Incidentally, the steam locomotives are all named after Rohan’s daughters.

“For those of you who want to discover Africa – in the woodpanelled, gleaming five-star luxury of a bygone era.” – London Daily Mail

The journey at the railway station begins with a festive Champagne reception in the cozy and elegant lounge.

© Rovos Rail

Railway Museum

In the museum next to the railway station you can, among others, meet the oldest Rovos locomotive driver, and there are plenty of historical collector’s items for railroad fans to marvel at.

Cape Town Journey

Our 1,600 km long journey in the characteristic green and cream wood-paneled train lasted 3 days and went from Pretoria to Cape Town. This trip and the reverse route, are among the most popular and can be combined perfectly with a safari in the East of South Africa.

With stops in Kimberley (Diamond Mine Museum + Big Hole) and in the historic, small village of Matjiesfontein, we passed impressive grasslands, huge mountain ranges, the barren Karoo semi-desert and the picturesque Cape Winelands.

Suites

The luxurious and spacious suites are air-conditioned, have desks, twin or double beds, a mini-bar, a safe, an amenity bag, 24-hour room service and are the epitome of luxury and comfort –  facilities that are of the highest standard. They are decorated with beautiful wood paneling, warm colors and elements from the Edwardian era. They offer spacious accommodation for two people, and you have the choice between three styles – Royal, Deluxe and Pullman.

Pullman Suites
The Pullman Suites (7m²) have a comfortable sofa seat during the day with a conversion to double or twin beds for the evening, and a private bathroom with shower.

Deluxe Suites
The Deluxe Suites (11 m²) each have a living area and a private bathroom with shower (See animation >>)

Guests are welcomed aboard in glamorous style with Champagne, and the mini bar is filled with anything your heart desires.

Every suite has a hostess, who ensures that guests are happy and content and practically fulfills your every wish.

To travel with open windows during the day, lying comfortably on your bed with a gentle breeze while listening to the rattling sound of the railway tracks – quite unique!

In the en-suite bathrooms, original fittings combine with modern technology of hot showers, hairdryers and shaver plugs. Amazing: although it seems small, everything fits perfectly in the bathroom cabinet.

The most glamorous part of the journey is dinner. There is a dress code for the elegant 1940’s Dining Car: Cocktail / Evening Dresses for women and a suit and tie is the minimum requirement for men.

When you go back to your suite in the evening after a delightful dinner, the beds are beautifully turned down. Hot water for tea, a plate of biscuits and nougat also awaits you upon your return, all prepared lovingly.

Royal Suites
The four Royal Suites (16m²) have their own living areas with armchairs and a full bathroom with shower and Victorian bath.

Dining car

Meals in the Edwardian-style Dining Car are an unforgettable experience – upholstered leather chairs, curtains embroidered with roses, sparkling crystal and silver create a stately ambiance. Magnificent cuisine with an emphasis on fresh and seasonal ingredients are served, complemented by excellent South African wines.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served as a buffet or à la carte. Fresh fruit, freshly squeezed juices, cereals and warm egg dishes, leave nothing to be desired.

And the splendid views of the ever-changing South African landscape, just add to the experience.

On the Safari Train, for example, Pretoria to Durban, Victoria Falls and Namibia, there is, of course, many more animals to see, but apart from cattle, we also saw ostriches, wildebeest and springbok on our route.

Lunch

What the kitchen team manages to conjure in such a small space, borders on magic! The sound of a gong heralds lunch and dinner.

Wines carefully paired with all 5 courses are served.

Dinner

The atmosphere at dinner is comfortable and more than luxurious – by candlelight, the silver and crystal are even more sparkling.

Some of the dishes served: Grilled local crayfish tails, braised leg of lamb, Cape Bobotie (minced meat with spices, almonds, and dried fruits), traditional Milk Tart and Malva Pudding with Amarula.

The food, impeccable service, and wines are all part of the five-star luxury!

Lounge, Bar & Observation Car

In the Lounge Cars, at the front and back of the train, you can relax with a delicious drink and enjoy the scenery. For smokers, there is a Smoking Lounge at the end of the train.

In the afternoon, cold beverages, wines, champagne, coffee, tea, snacks and much more are served in the Observation Car and the bar.

At the rear of the train, you can sit outside while admiring the bypassing scenery, sunsets, and catch a glimpse into the daily lives of the locals. You also have the opportunity to meet some of the other guests and make new acquaintances.

Before dinner, for an aperitif and after dinner for Cocktail night – the Observation Car is a comfortable meeting place.

Trips

Kimberley
The Kimberley excursion on the second day started with a small city tour. After that, we went to the Diamond Mine Museum at the Big Hole – one of the largest man-made archaeological sites in the world.

Diamonds were mined in the former Kimberley Mine until 1914. The Big Hole has an area of 17 hectares, and the water is 40m deep today. During mining operations, it, however, was 240m deep.

The first diamond, Eureka, was found here in 1866 and it weighed 21.25 carats.

After the excursions, we were always welcomed back at the station with refreshing drinks and warm smiles.

Matjiesfontein

On the third day, those who would like to stretch their legs, can disembark 5km from Matjiesfontein and walk to the small town in a group.

Matjiesfontein is a quaint village in typical Victorian Style on the edge of the semi-desert Karoo. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was a favorite weekend getaway for wealthy Capetonians. The secluded village was founded by Scottish railroader James Douglas Logan.

Today, the former spa and resort is a National Monument and living history. There is still a lively bustle in the historic The Lord Milner Hotel.

Conclusion

Our journey back in time with Rovos Rail was a unique and extraordinary experience. We especially enjoyed the peace and quiet, the slow journey, the magnificent views, the delicious food, the friendly service and the luxury. To be rocked to sleep at night and be spoiled with delicious food and drinks is an extravagant luxury indeed. These three beautiful days went by in the blink of an eye. We would have loved to stay on board longer!

Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa, Mauritius – Paradise with a view of Le Morne Mountain

Tropical elegance and romance with dramatic scenery on the west coast of Mauritius

You wake up, take a swim in the pool with the most spectacular view of Le Morne, have breakfast on your terrace while admiring the green tropical scenery, then you relax on the endless white sandy beach and snorkel in the Indian ocean amidst tropical fish – that is how the perfect day starts in Dinarobin!

Built in 2001, Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is set at the foot of the 556-meter high Le Morne Brabant mountain surrounded by palm trees in 20 acres of tropical gardens. The view of this imposing mountain is just incredible!

The location could hardly be more beautiful – with a pristine coral sand beach, it is situated on a peninsula on one of the most beautiful coasts of Mauritius.

The exclusive resort has 172 suites in elegant colonial style, four restaurants, a bar, six swimming pools (five of them are heated in winter) and the Clarins Spa with 13 treatment rooms, two saunas and two steam rooms.

With the neighboring Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa, one even has a choice of eight restaurants offering international and local cuisine, as well access to three golf courses, tennis courts, a kitesurfing school and extensive water sports activities. You can use the 24-hour shuttle service between the Paradis and the Dinarobin every 15 minutes.

The main pool is gigantic. You can swim a few laps and relax with a stunning view of the ocean.

The beach is kilometers-long and beautiful. The water is a warm 28 degrees Celsius, crystal clear and perfect for snorkeling.

The sunsets here in the west of the island are magnificent.

Suites

The luxurious suites are situated in double story houses in six crescent-shaped units of which five have their own pool.

We stayed in Suite 676. From there it is just a few steps to the pool and the beach. Simply fantastic!

All suites have ocean views, spacious terraces or balconies, huge bathrooms and are decorated in typical colonial style. 44 of the suites are located right on the beach.

The design with warm natural shades, colonial style furniture, large panoramic windows and the big terrace with seating area is very comfortable and spacious.  Although the resort is relatively big, you have the feeling of being at your own small private beach house.

The bathroom has everything you need. It is big and has a wardrobe, bath, large shower and two sinks.

Breakfast on your own terrace

We thought it was awesome to have breakfast served on our own terrace. For a small surcharge of only 5 EUR, you can enjoy all the breakfast delicacies in complete privacy.

Zen Suites (adults only)
The Zen suites have an “adults only” area with private pool and beach and are perfect for honeymooners and couples.

These suites are the same as the others, but they have some extras: a Nespresso machine, pool service, reserved gazebos and beach chairs, wireless internet connection on the beach, a beach concierge for restaurant and spa bookings and lots of peace and quiet.

Villa
The villas at Dinarobin are situated at the far end of the resort and offers a private pool, lots of luxury and space.

Restaurants & Bar

La Plage – excellent beach restaurant for lunch

The food here is delicious! It can get quite busy but having lunch with your feet in the sand is a great experience!

Umami – Pan-Asian restaurant with delicious sushi for dinner

The food here is incredible. A particular highlight is the Dessert Bento box – all the dessert delicacies packed into a box for two.

Il Gusto – traditional Tuscan cuisine in a beautiful setting

L’Harmoni – busy main restaurant with buffet right by the pool for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Le Mahogany – stylish beach bar for cocktails

Restaurants at Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

La Ravanne – delicious Mauritian kitchen with secluded tables

Brabant – the  main restaurant overlooking the pool

La Palma – Italian restaurant with romantic tables by the sea

Blue Marlin – lively and delightful fish restaurant

Spa

At the beautiful spa with its large pool, sauna, hammam and gym, there is a variety of wellness and Ayurveda treatments on offer.

Conclusion

The location of this luxurious resort is unique! The view of Le Morne Mountain is breathtaking. The suites are an excellent choice – after just a few steps you are at the pool or on the beach. Even though the hotel has many rooms, you still have the impression that you are almost alone, except when at the restaurants of course. Although the big restaurants are quite full, you have a variety to choose from.  We even quite often had the big main pool all to ourselves, as every unit has its own pool. We found it gloriously relaxing and very romantic. A great nature experience!

We thoroughly enjoyed the majestic view of the mountain, the beach and our suite and we will miss our morning swim, breakfast on our terrace and the aquariumlike snorkeling. It was terrific! We can highly recommend Dinarobin!

MANDHARI, Shimba Hills, Kenya – a private hideaway with spectacular views (+ Video)

Wide open spaces, peace and exclusive luxury

The view into the infinite vastness is the most beautiful in Africa. And that’s exactly what makes Mandhari (Swahili for the view) really special – the view quite simply is spectacular!

This luxury property really swept us off our feet – it’s so overwhelmingly beautiful! Mandhari is located in the Shimba Hills – on top of the Golini Ridge – overlooking the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary.

It is privately owned, but can be booked for some time now for overnight stays. The 8 hectare property has only 3 rooms and offers luxury and privacy with very personal service.

We were warmly greeted by Mganda and were well looked after during our entire stay. Chef Suleman took care of our physical well-being and Salim, the third member of the team ensured our safety.

“The view into the endless horizon sometimes helps us to reflect on what might be following next” -Emil Baschnonga

The heart of the lodge and absolute highlight is the extraordinary pool directly on the edge of the ridge with its spectacular panoramic view! WOW!

You can relax and unwind on one of the sunbeds or on the various bench seats in the pool while enjoying the amazing view.

If you’re lucky, you can even see some elephants from here. Unfortunately, we did not. Many of the elephants have already been relocated to the Tsavo National Park (also to protect them from poaching). However, we read in the guest book, that many guests have seen elephants from here!

Mganda always made sure we did not lack for anything. Sunsets are magnificently beautiful to watch and are always accompanied by a sundowner with a small snack of delicious homemade crisps and vegetable sticks.

To enjoy the sunset at the pool is pure luxury!

Rooms

The rooms are also exceptional. One of the rooms is a covered tent with open-air bath, one is built into the rocks and then the family house is situated right by the pool.

Tent Lodge
We stayed in this wonderful covered tent. It is more secluded and perfect for honeymooners!

When clouds of fog float by in the morning or the sun goes down in the evening – the view is simply magical!

We love these safari tents because they are so romantic! And with the outdoor sofa, the huge carpet and the large sky bed, it is also very comfortable.

The view from the bed – awesome!

Another key feature and special highlight is the unique open-air bathroom with a tree right in the middle! It also has a shower, basin and toilet.

It is not as cold here, as in other parts of Kenya or Africa, so you can still use it at night.

Rock Bedroom
The rock room is a small cozy room right under the lounge – built directly into the rocks and it also has stunning views.

Master Lodge
The main house or family house is located directly behind the pool. It has 2 rooms with 4 beds – one room with a double bed and the room next door with single beds.

Lounge

In the center of Mandhari there is a cozy lounge. It functions as a meeting place where you can also relax and enjoy the view from. A little further down there is an even larger terrace.

In the morning and in the evening, meals are also served here. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast on the terrace.

In the evening we could choose, whether we wanted to be seated in the lounge or on the terrace outside next to the kitchen. Of course, we decided to dine outside.

From here, we could look over Suleman’s shoulder while he cooked. He spoiled us with a delicious 3-course menu of soup, chicken curry and fruit salad.

Belmond La Residencia, Deià, Mallorca – Luxury, Art and Culinary delights in the Tramuntana Mountains (+ Video)

A sophisticated hotel with character & history

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-5950

After we photographed and filmed a wedding in the south-east of Mallorca, we arrived in an oasis of peace, where the air is filled with the sweet smell of flowers and oranges. In my opinion, the idyllic north-west of Mallorca has something magical about it! This five-star luxury boutique hotel that I chose for us, also has an exceptional atmosphere! I already found the pictures extremely beautiful, but my expectations were exceeded!

The Belmond La Residencia in Deia is one of the most intimate and luxurious hotels in Mallorca and one of the best hotels in the Balearic Islands. Even Hollywood stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Moss, Gwyneth Paltrow and Tom Hanks treasures this gem.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-5965

In a romantic Mediterranean setting, situated on the edge of the Tramuntana Mountains, between olive and citrus groves, you will find this retreat where you can relax and unwind! You can enjoy spectacular views of the picturesque mountain village of Deia, the winding roads and imposing mountains from almost everywhere. No wonder that so many artists have settled here in the past 50 years.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6273

Apart from all kinds of fun activities, such as tennis, rock climbing, exploring the island by Vespa, hiking, painting and sculpture lessons or taking a boat trip or going on a picnic with one of the resident donkeys, above all else, you can unwind and take a break from everyday life while enjoying wonderful food!

There are 3 pools, a spa, a hair salon, a kids’ club, 4 restaurants and a bar.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6274

This 16th century estate with its lush gardens and rooms distributed over several levels fits perfectly into the landscape and feels like a small village that you can get lost in. The former Richard Branson estate was converted into a luxury hotel in 1980 and has been part of the Belmond Collection since 2002.

Interview with Deputy Manager Jordi Vicens
Deputy Manager Jordi Vicens was kind enough to show us around and told us a bit more about the hotel.

Pools

The hotel has 2 outdoor pools, one that is for adults only, and an indoor pool in the spa.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6185

We found the magnificent and huge pool to be a real highlight! A true oasis where you can spend the whole day – which is exactly what many of the guests did. The pool is always heated to a pleasant temperature.

Rooms & Suites

All 67 rooms and suites are decorated in the elegant and rustic Mallorcan style, but no two are the same. Almost all of them, have their own terrace.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6062

We stayed in the beautiful Tramuntana suite on one of the higher levels. The view was simply breathtaking!

This á la carte restaurant on the large terrace, with spectacular views of the mountains and the village, offers tapas, snacks, drinks and even afternoon tea. In the evening you can also enjoy a wonderful romantic dinner here with the ocean in the background. Booking is essential.

Tips for Trips

Cala de Deia

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6664

We went down to the Cala de Deia beach. The 3km takes about 30 minutes on foot. It is a very nice walk down to the water’s edge through narrow streets and past imposing olive trees, but you can also hop on the hotel’s shuttle service.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6661

This little bay is not very suitable for bathing, as it is a bit difficult to get to the water over the pebbles and rocks and you also have to be careful of the jellyfish! The trip is still very worthwhile, especially for the picturesque setting and also to have a small bite to eat in one of the two restaurants.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6682

To get back to the hotel, we then lazily decided to rather use the shuttle service that picked us up right at the beach.

Conclusion

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6485

This retreat is the perfect place to completely relax and unwind, enjoy nature and the pleasant surroundings and be pampered all day long. The service is really good! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! It is equally perfect for honeymooners and families. Throughout the village like estate there are quiet corners and plenty of space for everyone. For families, the kids’ club with painting classes and many other activities, certainly is very interesting. There also is plenty to see and do for the more adventurous. It is in a slightly higher price range, but well worth it for this ultimate luxurious oasis of privacy, ambiance, excellent gourmet food and personal service. It is the perfect setting for that special occasion, such as a wedding proposal, a short luxurious getaway, honeymoon or even a wedding!

Denis Private Island, Seychelles – Barefoot Luxury, Ecotourism & Pure Relaxation

No phones, no keys, no worries – back to nature!

On our second visit to the Seychelles, we explored a little island paradise in the Indian Ocean. Denis Private Island is a secret destination for gourmets, couples and families who want to enjoy pure relaxation in conjunction with sophisticated luxury. In complete seclusion and with Robinson Crusoe feeling, you can completely relax on the dreamy white beaches, go snorkelling, diving or fishing, watch the countless birds, enjoy the finest food, explore the island and simply experience beautiful nature!

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

A lot is different about this island! There is no television, no mobile network and no internet in the rooms. The owners want you to come to rest and experience the ultimate luxury of having time!

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

The 143 hectare Denis Island, is located in a coral reef and has belonged to Kathryn and Michael Mason for almost 20 years now.  The Masons are the founders of Masons Travel, the oldest tour operators in the Seychelles. Besides the owners, only the hotel guests and staff live on the island. Together with the Green Island Foundation, they protect this little piece of paradise for future generations.

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

The island can only be reached by plane. Since a rat plague and in order to protect the birds on the island, vessels are no longer allowed to moor here.

We flew with a small plane from Air Seychelles, for about 30 minutes (95 km) from Mahé to Denis Island and were warmly received on the runway by a joyfully waving team including the Manager, Beverley Daguise.

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

On Sundays, no planes land here and the runway is converted into a cricket field.

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

The Hotel

The hotel is located in the north of the island, surrounded by coconut trees and fantastic tropical vegetation.

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

You get to experience the pure luxury immediately as you check-in, when you are welcomed with sashimi of sea bream and a cool refreshing drink.

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

In the main building you will find the lounge, the bar with a pool table, the wine cellar, the restaurant with a show kitchen, a small boutique and a library with TV and internet access. This is also the only Wi-Fi Hotspot, if you would like to use the internet.

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

I was overwhelmed by the tasteful and lovingly designed, down to the smallest detail, design of the lounge. Handmade Takamaka wooden furniture, pastel colours, Creole fabrics and maritime details such as shells, coral and driftwood exude an incredible atmosphere of comfort. The many cushions invite you to sit down and snuggle and remain here forever. By the way, the beautiful decor is the work of Kathryn Mason. Wow!

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

moniquedecaro-6298-denis-private-island

In the evening with the nice warm lighting the atmosphere is even more cosy and comfortable.

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

Pool

Update 2016: Unfortunately, there is no longer this great pool. He was destroyed by a big storm . Super pity!

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

Cottages

Denis Island has 25 cottages in total, each one between 90-325 square meters and one of them even has its own private pool. The cottages are charming with their simple, yet elegant typical island style design. They all have direct beach access and a private little beach area with loungers.

moniquedecaro-6601-denis-private-island

The cottages are surrounded by the tropical garden with plenty of space, so that you almost think, you were here on your own.

moniquedecaro-5807-denis-private-island

We stayed in a Deluxe Beach Cottage with a porch and daybed. It is a little further back, but even from here, you have a sea view.

moniquedecaro-5804-denis-private-island

For excursions you can arrange for bicycles to be brought to the cottage.

moniquedecaro-5801-denis-private-island

Each villa is individually decorated and has a porch, an open-air bathroom with freestanding bath, an outdoor shower, an iPod docking station, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, tea and coffee making facilities, a telephone, a mini bar and a hairdryer. You will not find a television, but what you will find, is pure relaxation!

And yes, there are no keys! It is very unusual indeed, but conveys a feeling of security and freedom.

moniquedecaro-5743-denis-private-island

In the cottages you will also find beautiful patterns, Creole fabrics, maritime decorative objects and handmade wooden furniture, which are manufactured in the island’s own carpentry.

moniquedecaro-5830-denis-private-island

moniquedecaro-5767-denis-private-island

Water is bountiful here. The glass bottles are filled every day and the mini bar can be can be stocked to your heart’s content.

moniquedecaro-5830-denis-private-island

Open-air bathroom

moniquedecaro-5758-denis-private-island

An absolute highlight is of course the open-air bathroom. Something we would love to have at home! When you come from the beach, you go directly through the garden and can wash the sand off your feet.

moniquedecaro-5783-denis-private-island

moniquedecaro-5843

These young visitors also belong to each cottage. Simply nature at its best!

moniquedecaro-5791

Private Spa

There is no spa as such, but a private mobile spa. So if you book a massage, the therapist will arrive with a massage table laden golf cart and will then set-up in the privacy of your own cottage. One can also choose whether you would like to have the massage in the cottage or on the terrace, of course. Our two therapists came from India and really knew what they were doing. From their very first touch, we were able to relax completely! A big plus is the cheerful birdsong in the background! These massages were absolutely among the best that we have ever had!

Restaurant

Creole cuisine with French finesse.

Also part of the all-round feel-good package is full board with excellent gourmet cuisine.

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

The restaurant is open plan and has a wonderful terrace overlooking the ocean. Breakfast and lunch can be enjoyed here with a view of the Indian Ocean and the occasional visit of some colourful island birds.

moniquedecaro-6292

moniquedecaro-6282-denis-private-island
Freshly baked brioche for breakfast – just great!

moniquedecaro-6280-denis-private-island

Lunchtime some light cuisine and a Creole buffet is on offer.

moniquedecaro-6247

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

For dinner there is a delicious five-course menu consisting of local and international specialties. The meat comes mainly from island’s own breeding and the fruit and vegetables also come from the island’s own small farm.  The hotel’s fishermen catch fresh fish on a daily basis in the surrounding waters.

On Wednesdays there is always a Japanese buffet, where the fresh fish is processed into delicious sushi and other delicacies.

moniquedecaro-6005

Beach-Barbecue

We were lucky enough to be at the hotel on a Saturday and got to experience the beach barbecue with live music. This is definitely not to be missed!
With romantic lighting, your feet in the sand and the sound of the waves, you can enjoy fresh fish and the best meat from the grill.

moniquedecaro-6556-denis-private-island

moniquedecaro-6536-denis-private-island

Dream Beaches

If you feel like it, you can completely circumnavigate the island with a long beach walk or a bicycle ride to the remote parts of the island.

moniquedecaro-6358-denis-private-island

moniquedecaro-6363-denis-private-island

moniquedecaro-denis-island

At dusk you can soak up the last rays of sun while watching the beautiful sunset at the pool, with a tasty cocktail in your hand.

moniquedecaro-5946-denis-private-island

The Island

Upon arrival you should definitely join the Island Tour. It is very informative and you will also find your way around the island much quicker. Although we spent 5 days on the island, we unfortunately, still have not seen it all.

moniquedecaro-6457

The former coconut plantation was gradually replanted with native trees and now offers many endangered birds a new home and protection.

Denis Private Island is committed to the conservation of nature and the protection of birds, turtles and tortoises. Sustainable tourism is extremely important here. With its own small farm, the hotel guests and staff can be supplied to a large extent with food from the island’s own production. Electricity and hot water come from solar power systems.

Bird Paradise

You will find countless bird species on Denis Island, among them for example, the Seychelles Fodies, Warblers, Magpie Robins and the long-tailed Paradise Flycatcher. During the Island Tour, we even found a Paradise Flycatcher in its nest. They are beautiful, noble birds with a pearly sheen.

moniquedecaro-6501

Many threatened bird species have already been brought here from other islands, in order to rehabilitate them. To this effect, all rodents were banished from the island.

moniquedecaro-6178

This is also the home of the beautiful fairy terns, which are also called Lovebirds as they are always seen as a pair sitting or flying together. That is unless the female is breeding, then she is fed fresh fish by the male.

Birdlife of Denis (PDF)

Giant Tortoises

Endangered giant tortoises also live on the island. Toby – the oldest turtle on the island – is already 117 years old and every day looks forward to being stroked on the neck by Island Tour guests!

moniquedecaro-6425

moniquedecaro-6433

We also asked ourselves why the turtles do not roam freely on the island?! That was once the case, but the giants simply flatten and eat everything in their way and so they all had to be moved to a spacious enclosure. Also a nice home to have!

moniquedecaro-6163

moniquedecaro-6157

Sea Turtles

Green sea turtles lay their eggs on the shore of Denis Island. Every day, the Denis Island biologists walk around the island twice to check the breeding sites and to count the turtles. The biologists, Janske and her husband Martijn, are also the guides for the Island Tour. Be sure to join!

moniquedecaro-6440

The Farm

You also get to know the small farm of the island on the Island Tour. Many chickens, goats, rabbits, quail, pigs and cattle happily live here. Thus, Denis is the only Seychelles island on which there is fresh milk. Many chicken eggs are also sold to Mahé. Herbs, fruit and vegetables are grown ecologically in the gardens, greenhouses and in the field.

moniquedecaro-6518

moniquedecaro-6494

Underwater World

The most beautiful beach and the perfect place to observe turtles, manta rays and plenty of other tropical fish, is the stretch of beach at the upper end of the runway. In order to see the nimble turtles, you have to be patient, but every now and then you can see their small sparkling heads just above the water surface. With a little luck, you can even see them underwater, if you float.  However, to get a photo of them, you need even more luck!

moniquedecaro-6438-denis-island

The crew gladly also take hotel guests out to sea for big game fishing, diving and snorkelling. Out in the ocean, there are large marlins, turtles, reef sharks and swordfish swimming about.

Houses of employees

The approximately 120 employees of the hotel charmingly live on the “Champs Elysées”! Their houses with its exclusive location, are at the other end of the island and very cosy and chic!

moniquedecaro-6471

Honeymoon & Wedding

One can also celebrate a wonderful wedding ceremony on Denis Island! There is a small chapel and sometimes the whole island is even fully booked for a wedding. The wedding package includes the wedding decor, a wedding cake, a bottle of champagne, the fees of the wedding officials and a romantic candlelight dinner on the beach. The registrar’s travel and accommodation expenses are for your own account.

moniquedecaro-6438-denis-island

Honeymooners get a sundowner cocktail with canapés, romantic candlelight dinner on the beach, a special turn down service and a romantic bath with candles, flowers and essential oils included in their package.

moniquedecaro-denis-private-island

Island Airport

moniquedecaro-6117-denis-private-island

Actually, you never want to leave Denis Island! But, when you have to, at least the waiting time in the airport lounge is made more bearable.

moniquedecaro-6117-denis-private-island

We had the good fortune to fly by helicopter from  ZilAir back to Mahé. An absolutely brilliant experience!

moniquedecaro-6117-denis-private-island

What a great island!

With the sustainable tourism concept, the stunning hotel and the great animal protection and nature conservation programs, the dedicated Mason family has created something truly out of the ordinary here. They are making a remarkable contribution to the protection of nature and wildlife, as even here in paradise, climate change will not simply pass by.

There is a lot to discover and experience on Denis Island, but best of all, you can really relax and unwind! With the excellent food even your palate is pampered! In addition, it is wonderful to get away from it all, without internet and television, we were able to switch off completely and rejuvenate body, mind and soul.

Denis Island leaves its mark in your heart! We thoroughly enjoyed our time here! Such a deserted island experience, is something very special indeed and leaves one yearning for more!
