Al Maha, Luxury Collection Desert Resort and Spa, Dubai – Desert Adventure at the Eco-Resort

Bedouin legacy at a luxurious desert camp

We traveled with our driver from the airport to the desert outside of Dubai. Along the way, we saw a few Oryx antelope roaming the magical dune and desert landscape with widesand dunes as far as the eye can see.

On the horizon, a green fabled palm oasis and the cream-colored tent roofs of the Al Maha, Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa became visible. Twenty years ago, the buried eternal spring, fed by ancient underground lakes, was given a new lease on life here.

In the style of a typical Bedouin village, now there are 42 dreamlike suites, each with its own pool, the mainbuilding with an excellent restaurant and a spa amidst the desert in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

“Under the chairmanship of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Emirates developed Al Maha as the first conservation eco-resort in the Gulf, preserving not only the desert and wildlife, but also the Bedouin heritage which developed within this environment. The Bedu have travelled this desert for over 5000 years. The legend of Al Maha, fact or fiction embodies our philosophy and we thank all who visit here for their participation on our history.”

The 5-star Al Maha, Luxury Collection Desert Resort and Spa, offers tranquility, a unique atmosphere, an authentic Arab cultural experience, attentive service, world-class cuisine, and unforgettable desert adventures. It is perfect for discerning travelers, couples and honeymooners!

Natural wonders & animal welfare

In 1997, the then crown prince and current ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, financed the first reintroduction of these symbolic animals into the desert of Al Maha, to save the Arabian Oryx antelopes from extinction and protect the fragile ecosystem of the desert.

„We are increasingly aware of the urgent need to take good care of our priceless natural heritage, all the more so as Dubai is expanding so fast. The Reserve protects our last unspoiled desert and unique Arabian way of life for future generations to enjoy.“ – HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman, Emirates & DDCR

In 1999, the Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa, with its 27 km² nature reserve, opened under the direction of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum. Almost 6,000 indigenous trees and shrubs were planted. Each one is watered via a water pipeline every 30 minutes.

The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) encompassing 225 km², was set up in cooperation with the government in2003. It is the first national park in the United Arab Emirates. Since then, the Emirates has been funding its own conservation team of ecologists and wildlife specialists, and 100% of the DDCR’svisitor income goes towards the conservation and care of the animals.

Today, the population of Oryx antelopes is recovering, andabout a thousand Oryx antelopes and gazelles livehere. The desert is also the home to the Rueppell’s fox, the Arabian red fox, rabbits, the Ethiopian hedgehog, and majestic birds of prey such as ospreys, falcons, owls andeagles, as well as pigeons, colorful parakeets and many more.

The lovable Arabian gazelles can be found everywhere in Al Maha. You can experience them up close and watch them for as long as you like. They walk around freely and feel just as much at home here as the guests. We even felt a little bit observed by them.

Seductive retreat with views of the dune landscape

The stately main building is built in the style of an old fortress and offers greats view into the vastness of the desert.

Management of the Al Maha has since been transferred to Starwood (SPG), which is why it is now part of the Luxury Collection and the Marriott Hotel group.

At this all-inclusive resort, all meals, exceptalcohol, two activities per day (falconry, camel riding, Arabian horse riding, archery, game drives, dune rides, sundowners and desert walks) are part of the package.

The chic Bedouin décor lobby offers plenty of seating, traditional rugs, old Bedouin artifacts, antique rifles, copper pots, Arabic tea, a bar with snacks and coffee, a library and a small souvenir and antique shop.

General Manager, Arne Silvis, comes from South Africa and has now been leading the Al Maha, Luxury Collection Desert Resort and Spa for 15 years with so much love and passion, that it is tangible! No wonder then that the resort has 30% recurring guest rate. We have never experienced that returning guests are welcomed as warmly as here. Here you become part of the Al Maha Family.

Glamping with safari atmosphere

Bedouin Suite

With a golf cart, we drove to our suite, of course, you can also walk, but we were told to relax, andso we did. The suites are scattered throughout the resort and offer plenty of privacy.

The Bedouin Suite is perfect for two people. The Royal and Emirates Suites are ideal for four people, andthe Presidential Suite can accommodate six people. In the small entrance area, you will find a Nespresso machine, water, a minibar, a kettle and free wine (for SPG members).

The Arabian design with its authentic antiques, dark wood, patterned Bedouin rugs and local artifacts under the big tent roof is absolutely stunning.

All doors in the light-filled suites can be opened. Gorgeous!

By the way, one is not only observed by the gazelles, but also by the countless birds. The dates and the tasty baklava pastries, which are available here as snacks, probably also have something to do with it.

Apart from the cozy sofas inviting you to relax and a desk, you will also find, binoculars and an easel with paper, pastels andpencils – such a special touch.

The bed is huge and super soft, as you would expect from the Marriott. You can sleep well and wake up to the fantastic view of the beautiful desert landscape.

The sound of birds chirping and the colors of the sky at sunrise are just spectacular! You simply have to open all the doors and become part of the magical desert landscape.

The suites are so far apart from each other and evoke the feeling of you being alone in the desert.

The view from the terrace and the infinity pool is fantastic! If there were not some exciting activities awaiting us, we could easily spend the entire day here watching the animals.

The humans are also observed.

In the beautiful bathroom with golden fittings, you will find two basins with exquisite BVLGARI products, a huge bathtub, a large rain shower and a bidet. Here you can enjoy loads of fresh air and marvel at the vast dunes.

Even though it cools down quite a bit at night, you can still use the pool, as it is heated.

Restaurant Al Diwaan

The restaurant with its large terrace has a magnificent view of the desert.

Breakfast

With birdsong all around, you can enjoy the scrumptious buffet-style breakfast while taking in the stunning view.

Lunch
Room service is available at no extra charge. If you prefer so, all meals can be delivered to your suite. Perfect if you want to spend more time away from it all.

Hajar Lounge Bar

At the chic lounge bar, Hajar, you can enjoy delicious cocktails, fine wines or an aperitif before dinner, in- or outdoors. During the sunset hours from 18:00 to 20:00, you can even have two for the price of one.

Dinner

At the cozy restaurant, 5-course, world-class international cuisine meals are served in- or outside in the evening.

The international team of chefs ranging from Poland to Kenya lovingly takes care of the culinary preferences of the guests. There is even a list where each guest is listed, noting their likes, dislikes and any food allergies. Amazing!

The food is out of this world! Chef Piotr is passionate about food, and this can be seen and tasted in the food he serves. Star-worthy indeed, but stars are not of importance to him; his guests are!

The terrace is very romantic with the blazing fire at night. If you decide to dine outside, you can also watch the gazelles.

The service is very attentive and friendly! Absolutely perfect!

The gazelle named Boriscame by every night. So sweet!

Desert Activities

The desert activities are definitely not to be missed, even if you have to get up very early for some of them. Before any of the excursions, you meet in the lobbyand can enjoy some coffee and strengthen yourself with all sorts of delicacies.

Falconry

At sunrise, 05:30 in the summer and 07:00 in the winter, when it is still cool, one can observe the guides working with the majestic hawks and owls.

After a little historical introduction, they showed us how to work with the falcons. Impressive!  Previously, they were used by the Bedouins for hunting, and today they are the feathered darlings of the sheikhs.

The hawkstake a break for 5 months a year, as it is too hot for them in summer.

The guides cannot afford to make any mistakes, such as forgetting the food as a reward. Then the hawk could just fly away, and that will be saying goodbye to USD 5000!

Hawks and owls are beautiful and fascinating creatures!

At the end of the show, you can even hold the hawks on your own.

Wild Life Drive

By jeep, off we wenton a small safari. While listening to the fascinating anecdotes of the field guides, you can observe the Oryx, after which the Al Maha is named.

This ever-shifting desert is the largest contiguous sand desert in the world and covers most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula.

Field guide Gregg comes from South Africa. He has worked there at numerous game reserves and is exceptionally knowledgeable.

A ride over the dunes is pure adrenaline and quite exciting!

Camel Trek & Sundowners

The Al Maha has 16 camels. In pairs, you can ride on them through the desert.

When it starts in the afternoon, the sun slowly sets during the leisurely ride. The desert turns orange, and the atmosphere is incredibly romantic.

After about 20 minutes, champagne and snacks await the riders, and you can sit on the dunes with a sundowner and watch the sunset.

Relaxed and happy, we made our way back to camp on camelback.

If you do not want to join the camel ride, you can also go by jeep.

Of course, there are many other activities. You also have the opportunity to ride on the resort’s beautiful Arabian horses.

Timeless Spa

The luxurious spa has a sauna, steam room, whirlpool, plunge pool, a Rasul chamber, treatment rooms, for Ayurveda treatments, forinstance, a gym and an outdoor infinity pool with beautifulviews of the dunes.

Cleansing and revitalizing facials, massages, body scrubs, manicures and pedicures are on offer.

You can relax wonderfully at the huge pool with its desert views and in the relaxation room.

Events, Honeymoon & Wedding

Al Maha, Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, is the perfect location for weddings, family reunions, special celebrations, andgroup events for up to 300 guests. There are so many ways to celebrate special occasions. Private dinners hosted among the dunes are very romantic.  A BBQ in the desert can even be arranged for largergroups.

Conclusion

The incredible attention to detail is evident everywhere. The service is personal and attentive. The activities are indeed an experience. The suites are beautiful, offer a lot of privacy and are absolutely perfect for relaxing. The tranquility and inspiring views are fantastic. The animals roaming freely throughout the resort are just magical – you want to watch them all day. This is an absolute paradise for nature and animal lovers!

Al Maha offers an unforgettable desert experience amidst the beautiful dune landscape combined with exemplary wildlife and nature conservation. It is a marvelous place to relax, which you miss time and again after leaving! Highly recommended for a relaxing, romantic and exciting break in the desert!

Denis Private Island, Seychellen – moving pictures of a luxurious island hotel + Interview with Manager Beverley Daguisé

With the sustainable tourism concept, the stunning hotel and the great animal protection and nature conservation programs, the dedicated Mason family has created something truly out of the ordinary here.

Denis Island leaves its mark in your heart! We thoroughly enjoyed our time here! You can find our full review here.

Manager Beverley Daguisé tells us in a small interview a little bit about this beautiful island and the hotel:

1. When is the most beautiful time to visit Denis Private Island and your hotel?

Honestly, we are so fortunate in Seychelles that we experience lovely weather throughout the year and temperatures ranging from 28-31 year-round. There are no cyclones or winters, we simply have 2 monsoon seasons which bring some winds and slight change in the sea patterns. Some choose the September/October season as for the fisherman or divers, this is the best time to come.

2. I know that a lot of furniture were produced by yourself. But who has planned this beautiful interior design?

The decor throughout the hotel has been influenced largely by the Seychellois family whom own the island. The key features is to bring a touch of the island, rustic and raw to the cottages where our guests reside. It’s important that our guests feel comfortable in their island cottage and our style has remained unpretentious yet offering all the comfort one would require on this secluded island.

3. Do you have any special offers, honeymoon offers and wedding packages?

Wedding Package:

  • decorated wedding venue
  • one tier wedding cake
  • one bottle of champagne
  • registrar fees and a romantic candle-lit dinner on the beach (subject to weather conditions).
  • overnight accommodation in single room on full board basis, including Mahe- Denis-Mahe flights will be provided for the registrar having to overnight on the island.

Honeymoon Package:

  • A private starlight dinner (weather permitting)
  • “Sunset Moment” (One Sundowner cocktail with canapés per couple once during the stay)
  • “Romantic Experience” once during stay (Special turndown – set up of bed)
  • A Honeymooners “Indulgence Experience” (Decoration in the bath with candles, petals & essential Oils)

4. Do you have special tips for a trip to the Seychelles? What is absolutely worth visiting?

Seychelles is certainly one of the most amazing destinations in the word, its natural beauty is striking and we continue to capture hearts world round. A special tip would be to make sure that you island hop throughout the Seychelles. With an archipelago of 115 islands, and each island having its own uniqueness and diversity, one cannot come to the Seychelles and only see one island. At least 3 islands is a must. Between the granitic and coralline islands, there is such a difference, yet both of them equally beautiful. Getting up close and personal to the Giant Tortoises is a unique experience and highly recommended. If you come to Denis Private island, come and meet Toby who is sitting at 117 years old. They love having their neck scratched.

5. Every Saturday there is a wonderful Beach Barbecue in your lovely hotel. Which Special on what day should also not to be missed?

The beach Barbeque is certainly a favourite as you dine under the stars, with the ocean waves a short distance away, and feet in the sand….that’s what paradise is all about! Another highlight is our Wednesday evening Japanese buffet, the fish is freshly caught off the island and later that evening delivered for dinner. There is a buffet of sushi, sashimi or teppanyaki and guests often compliment how the freshness is outstanding.

6. Can you tell us a little bit about you bird conservation project and your own farm.

The owners of Denis Island aim to be an example of sustainable development by integrating ecotourism with production (self-sustainability) and conservation activities. The island has its own farm and vegetable gardens that account for a large proportion of the food supplies needed for the hotel and staff. Also, much of the furniture is made by the island carpenters who use timber that is sustainably harvested on the island.

But, number one on the island’s agenda is the conservation of the environment.  Most of the conservation work on Denis Island has been done in collaboration with a number of local NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations) and assisted by the Seychelles government. To build a long-term conservation strategy, Denis Island decided to rally with the Green Islands Foundation (GIF), a local NGO that helps private island owners with their conservation and sustainability work. Denis has a good potential for the development of a broad-leaved forest on the island, which is suitable to serve as a safe haven for many of the Seychelles endemic landbird species that are threatened with extinction.

Having removed potential predators and created a suitable habitat, the island was deemed to be ready for the introduction of the endangered endemic birds. In 2004, Seychelles Fodies  and Seychelles Warblers were introduced, followed by Seychelles Magpie Robins and Seychelles Paradise Flycatchers in 2008. The endemic birds have bred successfully with a doubling or even tripling of their populations as a result.

Kind regards,

Beverley Daguisé

OKONJIMA Lodge, Namibia – Luxus lodge & genuine animal protection for large carnivores (+ videos)

A paradise for nature lovers, animal lovers, romantics, honeymooners and large carnivores in the OKONJIMA Nature Reserve

moniquedecaro-okonjima

Situated halfway between the capital Windhoek and the Etosha National Park, the OKONJIMA Game Reserve is situated amidst the Omboroko Mountains on the Waterberg Plateau, near Otjiwarongo. OKONJIMA (a Herero name meaning “Place of the baboons”) is not just simply a luxury lodge but also the home of the non-profit organization “AfriCat Foundation & Carnivore Care Center”.

moniquedecaro-okonjima

The trip through the reserve is thus already a wonderful experience. Here you can already meet the first wild animals.

moniquedecaro-okonjima-9611

The former cattle farm of the Brahman cattle breeding is a family-run business. In 1993 the cattle was sold, the Hanssen’s farm house was rebuilt into a lodge and the cattle farm turned into a nature protection project. Wayne, Donna and Rosalea Hanssen bought the farm from their parents and are now living there.

The unconventional concept of the lodge offers a broad range of options and is in our opinion unique. You can stay in the family-friendly Plains Camp, in the wonderful Chalets in the Luxury Bush Camp, in the luxurious Private Bush Suite, in the Grand African Villa or on the Campsite.

moniquedecaro-okonjima

With the “AfriCat-Foundation” family Hanssen has set herself the task to protect and rehabilitate the endangered large carnivores such as cheetahs, leopards and lions. Today the 20.000ha nature reserve is the home of numerous cheetahs, leopards, lions, caracals, wild dogs and hyenas. Since 1993 more than 1,000 big cats have been saved and caretaken by AfriCat, 86% of those have been released back into the wild.

The extraordinary design and the lovingly styled interior of the lodge have been created by the family Hanssen and by Shanna. Everything is being designed, created and produced by the OKONJIMA team or ordered in Windhoek. Terrific!

Interview with Manager Shanna Rae Groenewald

We talked to Shanna, the wonderful manager of Okonjima. She elaborately imparts the visitors her knowledge about the beautiful big cats and the vision of AfriCat and Okonjima in a very passionate way. Apart from this she plans individual and dreamlike bush weddings and loves to photograph them herself.

Private Bush Suite

The Private Bush Suite is really stunning and just perfect for a romantic stay for two or with the family, for the honeymoon or the wedding. You have a lot of privacy and pure luxury here!

In the two luxurious bedrooms there is space for four persons. There is a bedroom with sunrise view and one with sunset view, a living room with chimney, a bathroom with a bath tub, an indoor and an outdoor shower, several terraces, a pool, a fireplace and an own waterhole where you can observe the wild animals.

moniquedecaro-okonjima-9746

After arriving at the Bush Suite we were heartily welcomed by Claudia and we were directly visited by giraffes, kudus, impalas and wart hogs.

moniquedecaro-okonjima-0239

moniquedecaro-okonjima-9864

moniquedecaro-okonjima-9889

The special extra: An own cook, an own guide with safari jeep and a maid who practically anticipate your every wish belong to the suite. All activities and meal times are being adjusted to your wishes. Where else can you have such a luxury? Simply magnificent!

There is sufficient bird food in the villa for feeding the birds.

moniquedecaro-okonjima-0174

moniquedecaro-okonjima-9848

Especially in the evening it is dreamily romantic with your own fireplace, the chimney in the living-room and the extremely delicious three course menu made by your own cook. We can hardly imagine something more romantic than sitting nearby the fireplace in the evening and observing the animals pass by the water hole.

moniquedecaro-okonjima-9921

moniquedecaro-okonjima-9938

All drinks are included. The villa has a kitchen with a well stocked fridge and all kinds of wines and soft drinks.

moniquedecaro-okonjima-0433

One cannot awake in a more pleasant manner. And if you want to, you can sleep with open walls, the way we used to do. We loved it! It got a bit chilly in the night but therefore there were enough warm blankets to cover yourself with. For this view and this sunrise we loved getting up early to see animals or to make an exciting game drive.

moniquedecaro-okonjima-0011

Grand African Villa

The villa for families or groups is bigger than the Bush Suite but just as stylish though. Over 10 persons can stay here. The family villa is the only one which is situated in the middle of the reserve. It may happen that the large carnivores walk by your place.

Luxury Bush Camp

The Bush Camp consists of eight unique chalets with thatched roofs in African style and a wedding suite. This was being renovated and extended. Pictures will follow soon.

Plains Camp

In 2014 the former Main Camp, that used to be the farm house, was extended and the old barn was transformed into the main sector of the Plains Camp.

This family-friendly camp consists of 6 to 10 comfortable en-suite double rooms with garden view and 10 new, spacious rooms with mountain or bush view. The lapa design mirrors with its elaborate details the story of the farm. And super personal: There are pictures of all employees and family members on the walls! There is also a cozy lounge area, a restaurant, a souvenir shop and the pool of the camp – this was formerly the farm’s water cistern.

moniquedecaro-okonjima-8321

Tracking cheetahs and leopards with the passionate guides is a truly unique experience! Thanks to direction-finding transmitters you can get really close to the animals and above all, you can find them. Our guide Mike was really awesome and he was engaged with his heart and soul for the matter. You could feel his deep love for the animals and it was all a huge fun with him!

moniquedecaro-okonjima-8818

moniquedecaro-okonjima-8392

The following species belong to the carnivores: leopard, cheetah, caracal, small-spotted and large-spotted genets, spotted hyenas, wild dogs, aardwolves, bat-eared foxes, ratels, zorillas, slender, zebra and dwarf mangooses, red meerkats …

But you can also find other animal species: antelopes (kudu, orxy, eland, impala, red hartebeest, steinbock, blue wildebeest, springbok, duiker, Kirk’s dik-dik, porcupine, warthog, pangolin, giraffe, aardvark, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, Burchell’s zebra, cape baboon, dassie, spring, bush and Jameson’s red rock hare, dassie rat, real ground squirrel, dormice, bats, turtles,… and more than 250 bird species.

africat
AfriCat Foundation

True to the motto „Conservation through Education“ AfriCat dedicates itself to the protection and preservation of the carnivores in Namibia.

Carnivores are an important part of the ecosystem and also an important economic factor for the tourism. By informing and educating the local farmers and cattle drovers the foundation asks for more understanding, in order to weaken the conflict between man and carnivores – understanding prevents destruction! An awesome and absolutely impressive project!

OKONJIMA supports R.E.S.T. (Rare and Endangered Species Trust) and the Perivoli-Okonjima Country School because children are the future in a more sympathetic cohabitation of man and animals.

moniquedecaro-okonjima-0110

moniquedecaro-okonjima-8870

Further information from the passionate and truly engaged manager Shanna:

Do you want to help? Such a foundation is very costly. With a donation you can help the AfriCat Foundation with its great work. For 240,- EUR per year you can for example adopt a cheetah.  Adopt a carnivore here!

We love Okonjima!

moniquedecaro-okonjima-africat

We are still highly impressed by our stay in this unbelievable and fascinating dream lodge. The stylish and cozy atmosphere, the extraordinary design, the passion and heartiness of the staff and the love for the beautiful carnivores and other animals struck you in an unspeakable way. We have met here only people who inspired us, who work devotedly and who want to achieve very much.

Perfect for:

Nature and animal lovers
There is no better place in Namibia where you can observe cheetahs and leopards. We were overwhelmed by the number of wild animals that you can observe from the next nearness.

Romantics & honeymooners
There is hardly anything more romantic than the Bush Suite with its fireplace, the chimney and the great view. The wonderful atmosphere, the heartiness and the feeling of being pampered the whole day by the team are the absolutely perfect frame for a dreamlike and romantic time for two. Awakening in the morning with open tent walls and the incredibly beautiful sunrise is an absolute dream!

Wedding
Manager Shanna organizes a customized dream (bush) wedding for the couple. There are not too many weddings being held here. Big weddings just once a year. A legally recognized ceremony is pretty effortful in Namibia, but it is possible. Easier is a symbolic ceremony. But if you wish, Shanna takes care of the paperwork. We would also like to get married here again! This vastness, the wild animals and the nice people can make this day nothing but perfect.
