Nikoi Private Island, Indonesia – Barefoot Luxury in Paradise for Families and Couples

Rustic luxury with your feet in the sand

White sandy beaches, magnificent coral reefs, massive granite cliffs and tropical rainforest – the private Nikoi Island is an eco-friendly, heavenly resort for families and couples. This small private island located only 85km from Singapore on the east coast of Bintan offers a nature-loving lifestyle combined with simplistic luxury, for nature lovers and adventurers. Originally Nikoi was supposed to be a family holiday destination, but it is also ideal for couples. If you are looking for even more peace and quiet, the nearby sister island Cempedak Island would be a perfect choice perfect, as it only allows adults.

After we had arrived with the ferry from Singapore at Bintan, we relaxed in the lounge, while the employees took care of our luggage. Then we traveled across the island by car, and from the base station, by boat to Nikoi Island.

“We didn’t want to offer guests what they have come to expect from luxury resorts.” – Andrew Dixon, one of the co-owners of Nikoi Island

Nikoi is a private island that belongs to a small group of friends, who have lived in Asia for most of their working lives, and they all share a passion for nature, excellent food and wine. They could not find authentic, yet not too opulent holiday accommodation on Bintan, so they created what they were looking for themselves.  In 2007, Nikoi Private Island opened its doors. It has such a great reputation that it is usually booked six months in advance.

Marjan, the charismatic general manager, has been there from the start.

Beach Houses

The open, one- to three-story beach houses gracefully blend into the rainforest thanks to their indigenous design, using only local materials, which is evident in the impressive pieces of driftwood and ‘alang alang’ roofs.

The beach houses are only a few steps away from the ocean and offer magnificent sea views.

Due to the short distance to the ocean and the unique design of the vaulted roof, no air conditioning is necessary, because the roof acts like a chimney stack; drawing up the hot air and keeping the houses cool – voila, natural air conditioning!

Beach

The vast, stunning beach has a spectacular reef directly on the coast practically – only a few meters from the beach. Unfortunately, the water was a bit murky when we were there. But from what I could see, it must be spectacular when the water is crystal clear.

Pool

The impressive pool, built directly into the granite rock, is located on the northeast of the island.  It offers refreshment on hot days and an unobstructed view over the South China Sea.

Spa

The excellent spa offers terrific treatments and is located close to the pool, in three safari tents.

The spa uses natural ingredients such as virgin coconut oil in the massages (also for children), facials, scrubs, manicures, and pedicures.

JAVANESE MASSAGE – Renewed Vitality
Adapted from ancient Balinese massage techniques with strong pressure focusing on the back, shoulders and head for deep muscle relief.

Spa Menu

There is even a “Massage on the Run” option for those who do not have so much time. The treatment lasts only 30 minutes, but the therapists make every second count!

BACK RELIEVER – Iron Out Tense Muscles
Iron out any tension in the back, neck, shoulders, with this medium to strong massage.

Restaurant

There are two restaurants: one for families and one for couples or families with older children.

Atthe open restaurant, you can fully enjoy the natural surroundings. It serves the best, locally sourced products and delicious seafood in the fresh ocean breeze.

They offer fixed daily menus to help reduce food wastage and its environmental impact. Nikoi and Cempedak have a farm on Bintan. It supplies the two islands with eggs from 700 free-range chickens, chilies, Asian vegetables, Thai basil, salad and fruit. They have also added a flock of ducks and quails.

Anyone who would like to can opt to dine on the beach or order a picnic hamper which you can take to one of the smaller deserted islands close-by or a secluded spot of your choice on Nikoi.

In a beautiful, romantic ambiance, you can then enjoy freshly grilled seafood.  What a treat!

Bar

With its delicious cocktails, view of the ocean, and your feet in the sand, the cozy bar is a perfect oasis for relaxation.

As one of the owners is a wine and spirit connoisseur, the bar offers one of the largest selections of rum in Asia and a large variety of cocktails with fresh fruit.

Water sports

Nikoi is perfect for various water sports, such as sailing, fishing, diving, windsurfing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. It is only suitable for advanced divers. The best time for diving is between March and November.

Tip: If you do not only want to go snorkeling, there are many other ways you can explore the island. It offers countless hiking trails for bikers, rock climbers and hikers.

Social Commitment

With the founding of The Island Foundation (TIF), Nikoi and Cempedak, support the local people on Bintan and the neighboring islands. They help the local population, by empowering them, to improve their lives through an educational program run in the coastal communities of the Riau Archipelago.

Many of the employees have been working at the resort from the start, and they do so passionately. To them, service means exceeding guests’ expectations by always doing more than is necessary.

Conclusion

Nikoi Island is perfect for everyone that likes authentic, simplistic luxury holidays close to nature. The open-air design of the beach houses, restaurants and the rustic bar combined with the use of natural materials, creates a unique and relaxing atmosphere in the middle of nature. The beach and the reef off the coast are terrific. In our opinion, the island with its beautiful natural surroundings and the friendly staff has an extraordinary charm!

Top 10 Honeymoon Collection, Zanzibar – The Most Romantic Hotels

Honeymoon in the Tropical Paradise Zanzibar

For honeymoons, of course, we always gladly recommend Seychelles or Mauritius because of the unbeatable honeymoon discounts, but Zanzibar has captured our hearts. The island Unguja – better known as Zanzibar, which means the coast of the blacks, is situated in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa and is an absolute romantic paradise!  You are surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, picture-perfect beaches, tropical climate, warm-hearted people, and delicious fresh food.

While Mauritius and the Seychelles have already become quite touristy, with especially La Digue running the risk of being completely concreted over, Zanzibar still has its original charm with the hotels hidden amid tropical palm trees. You still have the opportunity to experience paradise up close: you can stay right on the beach, go swimming withdolphins, snorkeling or diving, or watch the sunset on a typical dhow boat. There are so many romantic moments to enjoy.

Our Top 10 Most Romantic Hotels

On Zanzibar one still finds authentic, small boutique hotels, eco-lodges and also some bigger yet romantic resorts. There is something to suit everyone’s taste and budget. We have been lucky enough, to have visited 4 of these top 10 hotels so far! Be inspired!

AtholPlace Hotel & Villa, Johannesburg, South Africa – Elegance & Gourmet Cuisine

Relaxation & glamor in a tropical oasis

We recovered from our long flight to Johannesburg at this secluded and romantic, luxury 5-star boutique hotel. It is part of the Morukuru Family and the Relais & Châteaux group.  This sublime retreat is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Johannesburg, the quiet and popular suburb, Atholl in Sandton.

Whether you are staying in one the nine suites, in the AtholPlace Villa with four bedrooms, or unwinding at the pool, it is the perfect place to relax before or after a safari holiday and enjoy gourmet cuisine at the in-house restaurant.

A particular highlight of this chic city hotel is the gourmet cuisine and personal service. Gloria, at reception, welcomed us so warmly that we immediately felt right at home.

In the comfortable library with an open fireplace, you can relax upon arrival, while enjoying a delicious cup of coffee.

The lounge, the library, the bar, and the restaurant are all modern and tastefully decorated in bright, neutral, and warm colors. The open plan design allows you to relish the fresh air while admiring the incredible landscape and the beautifully designed garden.

Since its renovation in 2013, AtholPlace has been completely off the grid, and relies on environmentally friendly energy and renewable electricity, thanks to the installation of solar panels.

“Dear Mrs. De Caro, we are very pleased to announce that you won the Relais & Châteaux photo contest Delicious Journeys, in the category Travel.” – Philippe Gombert, President of Relais & Châteaux (photo below)

The large garden with its heated pool under palm trees is the ideal spot to relax and unwind.

Suites

The Superior Suites in the main building are spacious, comprising 52 square meters. They are stylishly furnished in neutral and natural tones with modern furniture, African artworks, and loving attention to detail.

All suites have balconies, and most of them offer a view of the garden and pool.

You can prepare yourself a delicious cup of coffee or tea, and the mini bar is lavishly stocked.

The bathroom is spacious with double vanity, a shower, and a bathtub.

The Deluxe Suites, 45 square meters in size are located separately in another building in the garden. The AtholPlace Villa is located directly next door to the hotel and can accommodate up to eight people.

Enjoying breakfast out in the open overlooking the pool is really great!

The selection of dishes is diverse and very delicious with fresh fruit, freshly squeezed juice, cereals, pancakes, and egg dishes made to order.

In the evening you can enjoy some of the best South African cuisine on offer in a romantic ambiance.

The á la carte dinner menu, consisting of a choice of three starters, four main courses, and a few decadent desserts, changes regularly.

Chef Willy Malherbe spoils his guests with fresh ingredients from local suppliers, of which almost a third are organic. Thanks to sustainable fishing practices, nearly half of the fish products are certified by various labels.

Bar

The stylish bar is perfect for an aperitif or an after-dinner drink.

Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge, South Africa – Romance, Luxury & Adventure

Spectacular Big 5 safaris with mesmerizing views of the African Bushveld in the Madikwe Game Reserve

After we had such a wonderful experience at Seasons in Africa’s Kings Camp, our next journey took us to the romantic and luxurious Madikwe Hills Lodge. The Madikwe Game Reserve is situated in the north of South Africa against the border with Botswana, and it is malaria free. The lodge is tucked away between the rocks and the shade of the beautiful, ancient Tamboti trees. The rugged, rocky savannah landscape of the Reserve, one of South Africa’s oldest and largest private reserves, exudes a distinctive charm and African romance.

“When you touch the soil of our land, you feel a sense of personal renewal.” – Nelson Mandela Inauguration Speech 1994

The view from up here is breathtaking! You experience the wilderness up close!

There is a growing population of animals on the 75 000 hectare reserve. In addition to the Big 5 (lion, buffalo, elephant, rhino, and leopard), there are also over 66 other mammal species, such as the rare African wild dog, cheetah, eland, kudu, wildebeest, antelope, giraffes and more than 300 bird species to observe. The safaris are spectacular! But you also see many animals at the lodge. Klipspringers (the Afrikaans for ‘rock jumper’) are cute, small antelope you will come across quite often. They like to observe human beings, as much as we like to watch them.

Arrival with elephant traffic jam

The journey from Johannesburg or Pretoria is relatively long and takes about four to five hours by car. But of course, you have the opportunity to see the countryside, and with a great driver, you arrive in the blink of an eye. There are also direct flights available from Johannesburg.

After passing through the gate of the reserve, you are immediately on safari. For a while, a colossal elephant blocked the road. If an elephant is not in a good mood, you don’t dare move closer! Traffic comes to a standstill. It was interesting, he knew we were there. After he chased a car that came towards us, he decided he had enough, and disappeared into the bushes on his way to a water hole.

The lodge in the rocks

Finally, we arrived at the lodge. It offers an impressive view of the vastness of Africa. It almost seems as if the main building grows out of the rocks – it has been built ingeniously and harmonizes perfectly with its natural surroundings, where you can immerse yourself in experiencing the African bush up-close and personal. When the lodge was built 15 years ago, they went to great lengths to preserve every rock and tree, keeping the environment as untouched as possible!

Hannes Kruger has been the general manager at the lodge for nine years, and together with his dedicated team, they ensure your stay here is an extraordinary one.

From here above, you have a magnificent view of the savannah and a small water hole. There are always a few animals passing by.

All meals are served buffet style or a la carte. Either in the main lodge building or in the adjoining Boma, a fenced open air space with a fire pit.

All the suites and the main buildings are interconnected by walkways. This allows you to walk around alone at night.

Walking around, you might come upon all kinds of animals in the rocks or trees.

Luxurious suites with a view

Hidden in the hills are the ten luxury suites with thatched roofs.

The 160 square meter suites offer comfort, African ambiance, and privacy with their open design, floor-to-ceiling windows, and mesmerizing views. They all have private terraces, pools, outdoor showers, soft sofas, huge beds with mosquito nets, mini-bars, a fireplace, huge bathrooms with free-standing bathtubs, and indoor showers.

The mini-bar is filled to the brim, and there also is a water purifier, and each guest is given an aluminum bottle that they can fill up and take with them. As a result, the lodge saves on average 2000 plastic bottles per month. Brilliant!

Through the large concertina glass doors that open up completely, you get to be one with nature and enjoy the uninterrupted, magnificent view.

The large luxurious bathroom is gorgeous with its free-standing bathtub and rustic outdoor shower. By the way, the bath salt has a tremendous softening effect on the skin!

Little Madikwe

Little Madikwe Hills Lodge is luxury pure and also suitable for families accommodating up to 8 people. The villa has two spacious bedrooms, a pool, a private wine cellar, a gourmet kitchen, and an entertainment center. The lodge has its own game viewing vehicle, game ranger, chef and personal butler.

Sunrise Safari

Early morning, after a cup of coffee and snacks in the restaurant, off you go on the morning safari. To experience sunrise and sunset in Africa is one of life’s most sublime moments!

Every safari is unique. Every time you discover different animals in different situations. How lucky we were to find these cheetahs resting in the shade of the trees with their full bellies.

I love being in the African Bush. Sitting in the jeep with windswept hair, watching the animals, seeing, feeling and smelling the bush, makes me blissfully happy!

After a delicious morning coffee with Amarula, we heard a lion roar. Lucky and Eric are really great rangers and trackers. They followed the trail, and indeed found him!

Lucky really lives up to its name! He could not find any wild dogs for us this time around but found everything else we wanted to see. Hopefully, we will see wild dogs another time!

Kitchen with soul

Breakfast

Traditional Full English and Continental breakfast are served on the main deck. In addition to the English breakfast, there are Eggs Benedict, Eggs Onassis, Breakfast Ciabatta, French toast with Coppa Ham, Cranberry sauce Camembert slices, and Frittata with a twist.

Lunchtime

At lunchtime, you can spoil yourself with a delicious meal created by the passionate chefs at the lodge. The dishes are fusion food mixed with the finest in African ingredients. The end result: food with soul.

High tea

Shortly before the afternoon safari, high tea with delicious snacks is served. With this view, everything tastes even better!

Bush Spa Time

The perfect time to use the gym or indulge in relaxing spa treatments is either between breakfast and lunch or after lunch before the afternoon safari.

Ellen’s massage was exceptional and so relaxing! Products from Africology with medicinal plants, such as Rooibos, Aloe Ferox, Marula, and African potato are used.

Aromatherapy Full Body Massage
Aromatherapy is the unique combination of aromatherapy essential oils and massage..

Sunset Safari

After an afternoon spent at our own leisure, off we went on our next adventure.

We very often saw elephants in Madikwe. And so it was again, on our last evening. In addition to a bachelor group, in which some of them practiced their fighting skills, this time we also saw a breeding herd with many young elephants. So sweet!

I was especially drawn to the big bull or maybe, he to me?! He looked at me and came right up to me and then slowly strolled by. For the first time on safari, I simply had to take my camera down, and experience this incredible moment in its entirety. When the elephants then came over, we looked deep into each other’s eyes. I will never forget those shiny, warm brown eyes as long as I live. For a moment, time stood still. Unforgettable and deeply moving! A goosebump moment!

Thanks to the excellent protection program, guests still have the incredible privilege to see many rhinos!

For sundowners in the bush, Lucky opened his bar and Eric his terrific bush kitchen! With freshly sizzled beef skewers and gin & tonic, we ended the evening in the African bush.

On our return trip, Eric even spotted a rare Genet; a slender, slim cat with large spots.

Cocktail & Dinner Time

After the bartender lovingly prepares you a cocktail, you can enjoy dinner in a romantic atmosphere with lanterns and a fire pit, either buffet or a la carte style under the starry African sky.

Honeymoon & Wedding

The ambiance of the lodge makes it the perfect destination for a fantastic honeymoon in the African wilderness. For honeymooners, the Honeymoon Suite offers a stunning outdoor freestanding bathtub. Pure romance & luxury! Little Madikwe Lodge provides the ultimate in opulence, and weddings with up to 8 guests can be celebrated here.

Kings Camp Private Game Reserve, Timbavati Nature Reserve, South Africa – Big 5, Romance & Luxury

A luxurious, stylish safari lodge with spectacular wildlife encounters

We love the African bush: watching leopards with their cubs, early morning coffee in the bushveld, nyala antelope walking past the pool, sundowners, romantic campfire dinners and relaxing by the pool. What more could you wish for? And it’s especially beautiful here at Kings Camp!

Experience the charm and romance of a bygone era, spectacular wildlife sightings and marvel at the beautiful views of the African grasslands at this luxurious safari lodge with nine stylish safari-colonial suites.

The 60,000 hectare Timbavati Reserve, with its shady acacia and mopane trees, small lakes and the Nhlaralumi River, is breathtakingly beautiful – a piece of pristine Africa on the western border of the Kruger National Park. The reserve was established in the 1950s by a group of landowners who wanted to conserve the area, the fences adjacent to the Kruger National Park were removed in 1993, and now guests have the opportunity to experience wildlife at its best on an area of 2.2 million hectares.  The Timbavati Nature Reserve is home to 40 mammal and 282 bird species. The animals can even walk through the camp so you cannot walk around alone at night.

You can splash around in the pool overlooking a busy waterhole, sip a cocktail in the open lounge or bar and enjoy the excellent food in a romantic setting in the restaurant. Thanks to the kind and dedicated staff you will be spoiled all around.

Joof Alberts bought, renovated and opened this eco-lodge for discerning clients in 1995. Since 1998, it has been managed by husband and wife team, Warren and Lisha Moore, as if it was their own. Thanks to them and their dedicated staff, many of whom have been there from the very beginning, they manage to create an atmosphere, where one really feels welcome and at home.

“The magic of the Timbavati bush is waiting…”

High up in a tree-house style lounge you can enjoy the silence of nature.

Honeymoon Suite

The large honeymoon suite has a huge verandah with sun loungers, seating area, and private pool, a large king-sized four-poster bed, an open plan lounge with a comfortable seating area and a stylish open-plan bathroom with free-standing bathtub, double basins, and indoor and outdoor showers. You have plenty of space to relax, switch off and let nature work its magic thanks to the two large double doors framing the majestic landscape.

Wild animals visited the small waterhole in front of our suite. We saw some beautiful nyalas that are also depicted in the paintings in the suite, hornbills, and squirrels.

The wonderful Patricia: such a kind-hearted soul and just one of the many wonderful staff members at the lodge. Almost everyone addresses you by your first name, a very personal and warm gesture that really makes you feel at home.

“Kings Camp cordially invites you to join the spirit of mandleve and to walk with us into an eden of the past in this pristine corner of unspoiled Africa.”

The dark wood, the warm colors, the beautiful paintings, the golden picture frames, the massive chandeliers, and many striking design elements give the suite a palatial and at the same time intimate feel.

There is a Nespresso coffee machine, delicious sherry and a generously filled mini-bar in the suite.

Waterbuck Private Camp

The Waterbuck Camp overlooks a dry riverbed, has four bedrooms and can sleep up to eight people. It has a pool and a vast garden. This private villa offers privacy and pure luxury!

The camp has its own private game vehicle, ranger, tracker, chef, and housekeeper.

Sunrise Safari

You have to get up early for the morning game drive. After a wake-up call, a fresh cup of coffee and a small snack in the library we left the lodge just before sunrise at 5:00 am (5:30 am in the winter). Actually, we were just hoping to see a few Impala antelope – but once again the safari gods smiled upon us, and we saw so much more!

Sunrise in the African bush is a fantastic experience and worth getting up early for. The animals are more active in the morning, so the chances of some rare animal sightings are better. Just remember to dress warmly, especially in winter.

How sweet and perfect are these young nyalas!

After listening to all sorts of beautiful birds, zebras, nyalas and loads of interesting information and stories from our ranger Neil, we made our first Big 5 sighting.

We found Ntumbi, a beautiful leopard lady, busy feasting on her freshly caught prey in a small embankment. Neil drove down the slope, and we had a fantastic view of the leopardess. The leopards here are used to the jeeps and therefore simply cannot be bothered by their presence.

Ntumbi even brought her prey up into a big mopane tree right next to us.

Just when we thought it could not get any better, Ntumbi’s 9-month-old boy appeared and lay down on the ground next to the jeep, watching us. What a breathtaking experience to be able to look such a magnificent creature directly in the eyes. Unforgettable!

In awe, we spent a small eternity watching the leopards. Luckily, there were not many jeeps driving around, so we had time to take in the moment. Brilliant!

Lazy and full, Ntumbi was just hanging in the beautiful mopane tree.

After this amazing experience, we had a small breakfast with fresh coffee and hot chocolate in a dry riverbed in the middle of the African bush.

Freshly brewed bush coffee with Amarula – there is hardly anything better!

On the way back to the camp we even discovered some rhinos – great that they are protected here!

At around 9:00 we happily returned to camp, having experienced a wealth of wildlife sightings and ready to enjoy a hearty breakfast at the restaurant. If you want to, you can go on a guided bush walk afterwards.

Restaurant

The spacious restaurant serves delicious, tasty meals by the log fire or on the large terrace overlooking the waterhole.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served buffet style. Scrumptious, warm egg dishes are made to order.

Lunch

After relaxing for a while in your exquisite villa or enjoying a spa treatment, lunch is served between 13:30 and 15:00 with a beautiful view of the bush and the possibility of seeing some wildlife.

Sunset Safari

After a cup of afternoon coffee or tea in the library, we went on our next safari in the afternoon at 16:00 (15:30 in the winter).

The excitement when leaving is always tangible; you never know what you might see this time round.

We saw many animals on our afternoon game drive: impalas, kudu, giraffes, buffalos, wildebeests, rhinos, leopards and elephants.

These little elephant bulls gave us quite a show – so sweet. Annoyed, they ran towards the vehicle, angrily threw branches around, then tried to hide and even struck an impressive pose – incredibly cute!

But when the elephant mom got impatient, our ranger wisely decided it was time to move on.

We also saw Ntumbi and her cub again in the same spot as earlier the morning, still nibbling on their prey.

With a little luck, you can also see lions, cheetahs, hyenas and larger antelope like roan, eland, and tsessebe.

Lady luck was on our side, as we spotted yet another leopard. In the beautiful light of the sunset, we watched Marula and her 4-month-old cub.

Nothing is more amazing than having sundowners in the bush. With a gin & tonic in hand and some South African snacks like Biltong, nuts and dried fruit, we enjoyed the sunset.

At about 7 pm we went back to the camp. There we were warmly welcomed with a small aperitif.

Bar

After a refreshing drink at the bar, once you have had the opportunity to freshen up in your villa, it was dinner time.

Dinner

In the private dining room with its stunning chandelier and romantic fireplace, sumptuous meals are served matched with iconic South African wines.

Dinner served by the open fire under the starry African sky is especially romantic.

This is how you imagine Africa! Heavenly!

Social commitment & animal conservation

Apart from animal conservation, Kings Camp also strives to help the surrounding communities in cultural, environmental and economic terms. The Timbavati Foundation supports local sustainability programs that involve 29 high schools and an ever-growing number of primary schools in the area.

Honeymoon & Wedding

Kings Camp offers a perfect and stylish bush setting for proposing, hosting a wedding with a colonial charm or enjoying a romantic honeymoon. Wedding ceremonies take place in the middle of the African wilderness in a dry riverbed.

Conclusion

From the warm welcome to the farewell, we felt very much at home at Kings Camp. The suites are exquisite and offer loads of privacy. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful and the staff incredibly kind. Thanks to our excellent guide Neil and his tracker Donald, we had amazing and unforgettable safaris and wildlife sightings. The lodge is truly a haven where you can experience the African bush in refined luxury. Garonga Safari Camp & Little Garonga, Makalali Nature Reserve, South Africa

Luxury & Romance in the African bush

Garonga Safari Camp and Little Garonga are luxury camps set high above a dry riverbed in the 22 000 hectare Greater Makalali Private Nature Reserve west of the Kruger National Park. Garonga has six luxury tents and the luxurious bush camp, Little Garonga, has three suites. They both offer spectacular views of the green grasslands, trees and wild animals passing by.

The focus is on a holistic safari experience – safari for the soul. The soul safari experience includes bush walks in complete silence, meditation in the untouched wilderness, exciting game drives to see the Big Five, taking a bath in the bush or under the stars, massages and the “Sleep Out” – spending a night on your own in the African bushveld.

“May the ancient dust of Africa settle in your heart.”

The safari camp is perfect for couples and honeymooners who would like to experience nature and the soul of Africa up close. It can accommodate a maximum of 12 people and only children above the age of 12 are allowed.

We visited both camps at the end of summer, and the end of the rainy season. Since the region was blessed with abundant rainfall again this year, it was quite lush, a rather unusual picture of Africa!

In 1997 The Englishman, Bernardo Smith, opened Garonga Safari Camp. Ten years later, Little Garonga with three luxurious thatched suites opened its doors. Both camps have pools with great views of the wilderness.

“Unwind, Sleep Deeply, Be Yourself”

The camp has been refurbished recently and now boasts an authentic African atmosphere in warm, neutral tones, with beautiful decor and loads of cozy furniture.

The heart and soul of the camp is its staff. The 37 employees look after guests, affectionately and with a sense of fun and joy. They are all locals, and the staff village has just been renovated and now offers even more comfort.

Safari Tent

On the way to the tents, wild animals can cross your path. After all, you are in the middle of the bush and surrounded by beautiful nature. That’s why you cannot wander around alone at night.

In the spacious canvas tents, between the rough-plastered walls, there is a large bed with a mosquito net, a desk and a bathroom with an indoor and outdoor shower.

From the large open platform deck complete with comfortable chairs and a hammock you have a fantastic view overlooking the riverbed.

The tents are modern, luxurious and furnished with a lot of African charm.

Lunchtime

In the morning and afternoon, meals can be enjoyed at private tables. In the evening there is usually a big communal round table.

At lunchtime, delicious snacks, like salads, cheese, appetizers, etc. are served. In the main lounge, there is a help yourself bar and an air-cooled wine cellar with excellent South African wines.

Safari

As is customary in Africa, safari drives take place early in the morning and late in the afternoon. You never know what to expect and which animals you might see. That’s precisely what makes a safari so exciting – the anticipation! Makalali is a Big Five nature reserve outside the Kruger National Park. In addition to the Big Five, you can also expect to see cheetah, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, and gazelles among others.

Protection & conservation of rhinos
South Africa has a massive rhino poaching problem. Since 2014, the rhinos at the Makalali Reserve have been protected by an anti-poaching unit with great success!

Garonga’s philosophy, Safari for the soul, offers a casual and intimate encounter with wildlife, time for reflection and inspiration in nature.

Thanks to the experienced trackers, the rangers usually know where the animals are or in which direction they are heading. Exciting!

A few nervous looking impalas indicated that predators might be around.

And there they were – lions with a freshly killed kudu antelope. You do feel sorry for the poor kudu, but in their defense, it was the first meal in four days for the lions and their cubs.

Afterward, stuffed, they were happy and cuddled.

At a game drive there is a lot of time to let the animals work their magic – just sitting there, watching them, absorbed in the moment. Fantastic!

We came across this herd of elephants. At first, it was only a few, but then another herd joined them.

We sat quietly in our jeep and watched them, when all of a sudden, they moved – in our direction! After they had a good look at us, they strode along reasonably close to us! Simply brilliant!

It was literally teeming with elephants. They can sometimes be dangerous, as we learned shortly afterward. Derrick, our ranger had to scare some of them away, off the road so we could get out of there! Talk about an adrenaline rush!

Dinner time

In the evening, after an eventful day of wildlife sightings, guests can enjoy a drink by the warm, open fire in the lounge.

Drinks are followed by dinner at individual tables or the large communal table. Weather permitting, dinner is also sometimes served at the Boma with a romantic campfire atmosphere.

Little Garonga

Little Garonga is located right next to the Safari Camp. The three suites can accommodate a maximum of eight people (including two children). The lodge has its own host, chef, waiter, and housekeeper. And if you want to, you can even do yoga in the gazebo next to the pool.

The main building serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In good weather, you can enjoy dinner by the pool with a bonfire. Alternatively, you can also join the other guests at the Safari Camp for dinner.

The Hambleden Suite is perfect for couples with children or families. This suite has an indoor and outdoor lounge, mini-bar, open-air shower, a spacious bathroom with a copper bathtub, and a private pool with sun loungers, hammock and a magnificent view of the riverbed.

The Chiltern and Buckingham Suites have a platform deck with a hammock, a freestanding bathtub, an indoor and outdoor shower, a mini-bar and a beautiful lounge area in front of the large panoramic window.

Little Safari

At Little Garonga Phineas and Bongi escorted us on our game drives.

On this game drive, we saw also lions and lots of elephants.

Before the morning game drive, there is always coffee, tea, and snacks on offer. During the game drive, there is time for coffee in the middle of the bush, and afterward, back at the camp, a hearty breakfast is served.

The food is fantastic at both lodges! It leaves nothing to be desired.

Honeymoon & Wedding

Garonga is a perfect place for a bush wedding and ideal for a nature lover’s honeymoon. What could possibly be more romantic than a candlelight dinner in the bush or spending a night under the stars? The Sleep Out is a viewing deck with a four-poster bed where guests can enjoy a private dinner and spend the night alone in the bush.

Honeymoon Special

  • A 45-minute massage per the couple
  • A bottle of champagne on arrival
  • Free roundtrip transfer from  Hoedspruit and /or Phalaborwa (when staying four nights)

Wedding Package from 880 EUR

The Sleep Out

Bush & Star Bath

At Safari Camp you have the opportunity to take a Star Bath. Little Garonga offers a Bush Bath. With a glass of sparkling wine, you can enjoy a warm bubble bath after a safari under the starry skies. We even heard a few hyenas nearby. Adventurous!

Massage Sala

Unfortunately, we did not have time to visit the spa overlooking the riverbed, but some of the other guests told us they were thrilled!

Conclusion

We can honestly not say, we prefer one camp above the other. They each have their own unique charm. At Little Garonga, you have more peace, privacy, and even more luxury. But we also loved staying in a luxury tent right in the middle of the bush. The two main buildings are beautifully decorated in African style. Both camps offer lots of romance, beautiful pools, and attentive, friendly staff. The food is great. Whether you prefer it a bit wilder or more luxurious, there is something to suit everyone’s taste. The safaris were exciting, thrilling and very interesting. It was an extraordinary experience!

Rovos Rail, South Africa – Durban Safari with the Most Luxurious Train in the World & Tips

The colorful history of Rovos Rail – Traveling through the heart of Africa for more than 30 years

On April 29, 2019, the privately-owned luxury train tour operator, Rovos Rail, celebrates its 30th anniversary! Train enthusiast, Rohan Vos, originally intended to use the renovated train privately, to travel with his family through South Africa. But his visionary dreams led him to develop it into the most luxurious train in Africa.

The first overnight trip took place in 1987 with a seven-coach train to the former Eastern Transvaal. Since then, Rovos Rail has grown enormously and despite some serious setbacks and difficulties, now offers eight trips around South Africa with five trains that can accommodate 72 passengers. A sixth train is in production with completion aimed for December 2019. Rovos Rail Milestones >>

“The most luxurious trains in the world travelling through the heart of africa.” – Rovos Rail Tours

We lost so much money in the early days, and we knew nothing about hospitality. In my naivety, I believed what we were offering was so unique that tickets would sell easily. Boy, was I mistaken.” Rohan Vos, owner, and CEO of Rovos Rail Tours

Rovos Rail now employs 440 staff members, many who have been with the company since the beginning. Capital Park Station, is the impressive private railway station and headquarters in Pretoria. In 1999, the derelict 60-hectare property was rehabilitated and renovated to become the home of everything from the on-site laundry and kitchen to the locomotive and coach maintenance workshops responsible for the production of furniture and maintenance of the locomotives and wagons.

There is a story behind each Rovos Rail locomotive, and they all have their own distinctive character and charm. All the engines acquired for Rovos Rail have been named after the Vos children.

Rohan Vos had had his eye on locomotive 3360 “Shaun” since 1986. Ten years later, he purchased and lovingly restored it with the help of his staff. Use of steam has become increasingly difficult over the years as more and more water and coaling facilities have been scrapped. Diesel or electric locomotives are used while steam is used in and around the area of Rovos Rail Station only on departure and arrival.

“We also have our own little museum that pays homage to our 30 years of operation and also South Africa’s railway history.” – Rohan Vos

Even after 30 years, visionary, owner and CEO of Rovos Rail Tours, Rohan Vos, still loves greeting guests himself on their arrival in Pretoria, when he has time. We were also lucky enough to get to know the charismatic Rovos Rail’s owner!

If you feel like it, you can visit the workshop sheds in Pretoria upon arrival and watch the employees at work. They do magic! Transforming a wagon bought for 70,000 South African Rand into a luxuriously restored cart worth 1 million Rands.

Rovos Rail takes discerning passengers from its private train station to Cape Town, Durban, the Victoria Falls, and Namibia. Travel times vary between 48 hours and 15 days. The newest route, Trail of Two Oceans, from Dar Es Salaam to Lobito in Angola, will be launched in July this year. It will be the first time in history that a passenger train will cross the Copper Route from east to west.

Durban-Safari

Last year we had an unforgettable experience, traveling from Pretoria to Cape Town with Rovos Rail. This year, the most luxurious train in Africa, took us on a beautiful journey through KwaZulu-Natal. Our trip started in Durban, a popular city with sandy beaches on the Indian Ocean. In Zulu, it is aptly named Thekwini – the place where earth and water meet.

The three-day Durban Safari is Rohan Vos’ favorite.  On this trip through KwaZulu-Natal, you not only get to enjoy life on board but can also go on many interesting excursions. The program includes a trip to the Apartheid Museum, the Ardmore Pottery Workshop, a tour of several battlefields with a historian, a safari at the Spioenkop Game Reserve and a game drive at the Nambiti Conservancy, where you get to experience the Big Five up close.

Deluxe Suite

Settling into the elegant suite is a great feeling. The magnificent mahogany wood paneled suites, finished in brass and silver with handcrafted glass and lampshades, takes you on a journey back in time to the 1950s. The suite is ingeniously plannedand beautifully designed in Edwardian colonial style.

We got acquainted with our cabin hostess Merica, and then the train wheels started their clickety-clack, and we were sent off in style!

The minibar is stocked according to your preferences.

KwaZulu-Natal

From the Indian Ocean, the route led through KwaZulu-Natal to the Drakensberg Mountains. The name of this province, is a combination of KwaZulu, meaning place of the Zulu, and the former name of the province, Natal. The climate here is subtropical, and it is generally warm and humid. The Drakensberg is a sandstone and granite mountain range with some peaks higher than 3000 m.  It is part of the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park and a World Heritage Site.

Lunch Time

The delicious 4-course lunch allows you to enjoy the view, the delicious food, and the carefully paired wines.

The meals are top-notch. What makes it even more impressive, is the fact that the kitchen team prepares these dishes in such a small space!

Observation Car

A popular meeting point between meals and excursions is the observation deck.

Zululand

Zululand is located in the northern part of KwaZulu Natal, bordering Maputaland, the Kingdom of Swaziland, the Battlefields, the North Coast and in the east, the Indian Ocean. It is an area rich in symbolism and tradition, and the age-old Zulu culture remains today. Here you will find green hills, waving grasslands, lush forests and a peaceful, unhurried lifestyle.

Nelson Mandela Capture Site

By bus, we went on our first trip to the Apartheid Museum. It tells the remarkable story about the life and the long road to freedom of Nelson Mandela.

Born in 1924 in Mvezo, South Africa, into a Xhosa tribe, Nelson Mandela became the political leader of the African National Congress (ANC) and the first black president of South Africa. From 1964 to 1990, Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, for acts of sabotage and for conspiring to overthrow the Apartheid regime violently.

Ardmore Ceramic Art

After visiting the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, we went to the Ardmore Ceramics workshop. Thanks to the founder, Fée Halsted, 80 Zulu men and women have the opportunity to express their imagination based on nature and Zulu folklore and tradition. As such, theykeep their sense of rhythm, color, dance, and song alive.

Fée and her daughters have created a truly unique business with so much energy and love. Their patterns and designs even made it to Hérmes in France.

The sculptures are not only beautifully designed and painted – but they also often contain funny fantasy elements. The artists have free rein. They do not receive a fixed salary, but are paid according to the quality of their objects and can earn a good living.

After every excursion, we were warmly welcomed back at the train station by the professional and friendly Rovos Rail employees.

Dinner Time

The best thing about a Rovos Rail train journey is getting ready for dinner. The minimum requirement for men is a jacket, tie or bow tie and for women smart evening wear.

In the sparkling and ornate dining car, exquisite 4-course meals are served, each course served with iconic South African wines in soft, romantic candlelight.

Lounge Car

The perfect place to end the evening is in the lounge or observation car with cocktails and good wine. The last night on board is usually celebrated with a cocktail party.

Upon return to our suite, the beds were already lovingly turned down. Gently rocked to sleep at night – a dream!

Breakfast Time

Having a delicious breakfast while enjoying the majestic views.

Spionkop Lodge

Spionkop Lodge is a game farm adjacent to an 11,000-hectare nature reserve with magnificent views of the mountains, the bush and the battlefields of the area. You can either go on a safari or on a history tour of the Battlefields with the owner Raymond Heron or his son.

From here, British generals, such as Redvers Henry Buller, commanded their troops to fight the Boers. Mahatma Gandhi served as a stretcher bearer in this war. Winston Churchill personally convinced himself of the action on Spioenkop, and General Louis Botha commanded the Boer troops.

We stood on the summit plateau of Mount Alice and had a 360-degree view of the Spioenkop Game Reserve, the Tugela River, the Drakensberg and the “mountain of spies.” In 1899 the British suffered their worst defeat here at Spioenkop against the Boers. It was not until 1902 that the bitter war ended with a peace treaty.

The beautiful turn of the century farmhouse, formerly the British headquarters, has been lovingly restored in Natal colonial style.

Nambiti Big 5 Private Game Reserve

The Nambiti Reserve is set on 20,000-hectares of malaria-free bushveld with savannas, grasslands, the Sundays River and tall Acacia trees in KwaZulu-Natal.

Three jeeps awaited us, and off we went on safari with our ranger Ben.

On the way, we met some giraffes, waterbuck, kudu, antelope, and elephants.

Of course, you cannot wait to see the Big 5 when on safari! And if you then suddenly run into some elephants, it cannot get much better!

The grand finale of any safari is, as always, sundowners in the bush.

After the safari, we were welcomed back in romantic style with champagne and candles on the tracks.

Conclusion

Traveling on Rovos Rail pays tribute to a luxurious bygone era! The entire atmosphere on board is serene and romantic. We loved the suites, the food, the wines, the excursions, the attentive service and above all, what Rohan Vos has accomplished with great vision and passion over the last 30 years. It is absolutely amazing how he with his love of vintage trains and train journeys of yesteryear, has created a legacy and has brought the style and elegance of a past era back to life! We loved our trip on this world-class, one of its kind train. As a bonus, you always meet such fascinating people on board, you are completely spoiled and can learn so much about this beautiful country and its people on the intriguing excursions.

Zuri Zanzibar, Zanzibar, Africa – Romance, Design & Sustainability in a Feel-Good Tropical Paradise

Celebrating the Turn of the Year at a Design Hotel under the Palm Trees

Zuri Zanzibar is located in the northwest of Zanzibar right on the ocean and belongs to the Design Hotels ™. With its sandy white beach, the turquoise blue sea, tropical garden, and 55 detached bungalows, suites, and beach villas, it is the perfect paradise for romantics, honeymooners, dreamers, and families. At this beautifully designed, flourishing boutique hotel you have the feeling that time slows down. Thanks to the tranquil ambiance and the lovely staff, this is an oasis of pure relaxation!

We chose to spend the turn of the year 2018/2019 at this fantastic, beautiful spot, and we could not have chosen better! When Zuri was advertised as a new hotel on the internet a year ago, it was love at first sight for me. Moreover, no matter how high my expectations were, I was not disappointed – quite the contrary! Our stay and especially New Year’s Eve were terrific!

Made by Originals @ Design Hotels

The modern and new Zuri, which quite fittingly means beautiful in Swahili, is the culmination of three year’s passionate, hard work.  It is built on one of the most beautiful beaches on the island and opened its doors in July 2018. It would have been easy to build 100 villas on the huge plot, but the owner Václav Dejčmar (Interview at Design Hotels) wanted to offer his guests loads of privacy and, above all, natural beauty.

“Today, when more and more things tend to feel and taste the same, it is not an overstatement to say that Zanzibar is different. Located just on the Equator, the colours are more intense, more saturated, more vibrant. And, for some reason, the time runs differently as well! In this environment, it is so easy to forget our daily routines, to rouse our dormant imagination, and to perceive life from a new angle. Stop “doing” and start “being”. Because, ultimately, – we are human beings, not human doings! And it all began in Africa :-)” -Vaclav Dejcmar, Owner of Zuri Zanzibar

Zuri is not just a resort, but a vision and a lifestyle. Design Hotels ™ aims to create a unique global community of design, architecture, and cultural authenticity with genuine hospitality.

The resort has a long private beach, a large infinity pool, a spice garden, three restaurants, four bars, a yoga pavilion, a spa, an outdoor gym, and a library.

The stunning garden, designed by Ferdinand Leffler, is maintained daily. It is a real eye-catcher and allows you to immerse yourself in the beautiful, tropical surroundings!

Sustainability, social commitment & responsible tourism

Sustainability was paramount in the design and construction of Zuri. The resort strives to be as self-sufficient as possible. The water comes from a private well with a desalination plant. Wastewater is recycled and used in the resort’s gardens. Approximately 60,000 m irrigation pipes provide the garden with water. The unique Evening Breeze cooling system consumes only a quarter of the energy used by conventional air conditioning.

“Sustainability is the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

EarthCheck has awarded Zuri a Sustainable Design Gold Certification. Plastic is entirely omitted in the resort. In the near future, guests can help plant new corals in the ocean.  With many of its own initiatives, for example, ‘Zuri Giving’ and efforts in cooperation with other companies, Zuri supports the environment, education and waste management of the local population. (Read more >>)

Interview with General Manager David Fernández Fanego

Dreams are made of sand and sun …

Zuri Beach

Unlike all the other beaches on the island, you can relax and swim in the sea all day long on the 300 m long private beach, as there is no tidal influence here.

The colors are incredibly bright and radiant. You really cannot believe your eyes when you look at the ocean’s mesmerizing azure-blue waters; it seems to be taken out of a beautiful postcard!

Although Zuri’s beach is private, you can still watch the hustle and bustle of the locals and experience the real African zest for life all around. Soak in the spectacular sunsets on one of the cozy bean bags in the sand or on a swimming hoop in the ocean.

Feeling Tropical @ Zuri Bungalows

The resort, with 46 bungalows, six suites, and three thatched-roof beach villas, is reminiscent of an African village. It was designed by Jestico + Whiles in traditional African and Asian style using only local natural materials.

Zuri Bungalow

With modern and ecologically responsible technology, hammocks on the shady terrace, outdoor showers and luxurious furniture, the 66 square meter bungalows have an incredible atmosphere and offer plenty of privacy.

We loved, hanging out on the spacious 25 square meter terrace.

As a welcome gift, a typical Kanga cloth and a bracelet awaited us on the bed.

On the walls, the large-scale paintings by local artists create a feeling of warmth and coziness.

You can enjoy some excellent coffee from the chic mini-bar and delicious cookies on the terrace with a good book. The mangoes, we bought at one of the countless fruit stalls on the street.

The stunning design concept seamlessly combines modern and typical African elements, and is strikingly chic!

The organic bath products in the well-designed bathroom are made on site from seaweed.

This spectacular bead curtain is handmade from countless paper beads made out of old magazines. Impressive!

All the bungalows have great outdoor showers, and some of the Ocean View bungalows also have a bathtub, and the Jacuzzi bungalows have a Jacuzzi on the terrace. Some bungalows are interconnected making them perfect for friends or families.

Suites & Villas

The Suites and Beach villas have their own stretch of private beach and Dhow Bar all to themselves.  The Suites are 132 square meters and have a living area, a Jacuzzi, a bathtub, an outdoor shower, and a 50 square meter terrace. The Private Beach villas, from 260 square meters, have two or three bedrooms, a 12-meter pool, a games room, living room, kitchen and access to the private beach.

Life is cool by the pool …

With this fantastic view of the ocean, it is worth spending your time not only on the beach, but also at the 32-meter long infinity pool. Delicious cocktails and snacks can be ordered directly from the Maisha restaurant.

Eat well and feel good …

At Zuri, you can enjoy delicious dishes with European, African and Indian influences in the restaurant, on the beach, by the pool or in your bungalow.

Upendo Restaurant

The beautiful open design main restaurant serves breakfast with live cooking stations in the morning and a 5-course international cuisine dinner in the evening.

Enjoy the vast variety of delicious breakfast dishes while taking in the magnificent views of the resort and the Indian Ocean.

You can tell that you are at a Design Hotel. The colors, the fabrics, and the decor – everything blends perfectly together and creates an ultra-stylish, yet comfortable atmosphere.

Peponi bar
Enjoy a high-quality gin and cigar in the peaceful atmosphere of the Peponi Bar.

Maisha Resto & Bar

The chic African design, poolside restaurant Maisha offers a mix of Southern European and Indian Ocean cuisine with great views of the ocean. The dishes are also served directly at the pool. If you would like to, you can also enjoy breakfast or dinner here (at extra cost) on a smaller scale.

Bahari Bar & Grill

You can enjoy finger foods and small bites, cocktails, refreshing drinks, including sugar cane cocktails, fruit daiquiris and smoothies from the Bahari Bar & Grill beach restaurant while sunbathing on the beach or later while marveling at the magnificent sunset.

Dining by Design

At Dining by Design, you can enjoy wonderful romantic candlelight dinners on the beach.

Take time to make your soul happy …

Maua Wellness

Healing Earth manages the spa. It has three airy massage rooms, a whirlpool terrace with sunbeds and a salon. It offers a variety of treatments, manicures, pedicures, and facials.

CLOSE YOUR EYES AND EMPTY YOUR MIND. OUR AIM IS FOR GUESTS TO REBALANCE, AND TRULY RESTORE THEMSELVES, BOTH PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.

ZANZI SPICE JOURNEY
A powerful blend of coffee, cinnamon, orange and island spicesapplied in a body polish, wrap and massage to define, sculpt and revive.

Inhale and exhale …

Yoga

At the yoga pavilion, you can relax and regenerate by doing some yoga (some courses are free of charge) while enjoying the magnificent view of the turquoise ocean.

Live life with a little Spice …

Spice Garden

The spice garden is the perfect place for meditation or to discover the spices of Zanzibar.

Meditation classes and Spice Garden Tours are offered daily (on some days in combination with a cooking class).

The Spice Garden Tour is very interesting. There are plenty to smell and taste. When some of us wanted to try some fresh baobab fruit, no effort was spared to fulfil that wish.

In the open kitchen, you even have the opportunity to experience a cooking class with the hotel chefs and to discover and taste the secrets of Swahili cuisine.

The fresh snapper ceviche was a real treat!

Keep calm and paddle on …

Water Sports Center & Shop

Right next to the beach bar is the Wimbi Water Sports Center. Here you can rent snorkeling and water sports equipment, beach games, and book a Dhow sunset cruise, Ngalawa boat trip, scuba diving lessons, fishing and snorkeling trips. We found the Snorkeling and fishing tour by East Africa Diving great! On our trip, we even encountered some dolphins.

At the beautiful Sheikha, you can buy beautiful things for your home in the adjoining shop.

Happily ever after …

Honeymoon Special

  • A bottle of sparkling wine
  • 20% discount on the 60-minute couple’s massage
  • Lunch on the beach for two
  • VIP gift
  • Romantic room decoration
  • Sundowners on the beach for two

Celebrate with up to 200 guests at the cocktail party and with up to 130 guests at the ceremony and gala dinner. (Zuri Weddings Brochure >>)

Happy new year …

New Year’s Eve at Zuri was awesome! Many specials were offered over several days, and New Year was extensively celebrated. The celebrations started the evening before with a beach BBQ. Not only was the food delicious, but to watch the Masai dancers with your feet in the sand was a great experience.

On New Year’s Eve, the evening started early with a cocktail party in the Spice Garden. It continued with a grand gala dinner in the restaurant and ended spectacularly with a fire show, dancers from Stone Town and a DJ party on the beach. Just awesome!

The fire show was spectacular, and the dancers from Stone Town were indeed world class!

With a great DJ from Stone Town, we ended the night under starry skies to the cool beat of the music.

The beach is well-known as one of the top kitesurfing spots in the world, and from midDecember to the mid-March and mid-June to mid-September, it is a kitesurfer’s paradise.

The four-hectare beach resort also has two restaurants, a rooftop bar and lounge, and a modern watersport and kitesurfing center.

“A little paradise for enjoying a taste of carefree living”
Maître de Maison – Linda Le Dirach

Spa

The spa is set amidst the beautiful natural surroundings. A variety of body treatments and wellness therapies are offered. The treatments have a holistic approach to enhance wellbeing and relaxation. Therapists use local products made from natural ingredients such as seagrass, coconut, and spices. Next to the open treatment rooms and the outdoor fitness center, there is a sauna and a steam room.

Relaxing Massage
Relax your senses with a full body treatment using exquisite oil of rose, jasmine or lavender to calm your nervous system and leave you completely at peace.

Zanzibar Spice Massage
Revive your skin’s natural health with this traditional oil based treatment. A holistic massage with Zanzibar spices and coconut oil is used to stimulate blood circulation and strengthen the immune system.

The therapists and the treatments were extraordinary – one of the best treatments we had on our trip to Zanzibar.

Pool

The huge pool is perfect for relaxation, and there is also a children’s pool.

Beach

On the 200 meter beachfront, you can relax on the beach beds, and watch the kitesurfers, or if you are brave enough, kitesurf yourself.

Villas

There are five beachfront one bedroom villas, five two bedroom family villas, and a five-bedroom presidential villa. With their traditional palm roofs and sun-bleached wood, they look like part of a rustic fishing village.

Beach Villa with one bedroom

Family villa with two bedrooms

The villas are set on 1500 square meter plots in a fabulous tropical garden.  The double story villas each have a pool, two bedrooms and a lounge with a dining area.

WE BELIEVE THAT SPACE IS LUXURY.

Each villa has two bathrooms, one is an indoor rain shower, and the other one is a spectacular outdoor bathroom with freestanding bathtub and a shower.

Deluxe Room with Shared Pool

The two bedrooms in the family villa, are also individually rented as deluxe bedrooms. The pool and the lounge can then be shared. The beautiful outdoor bathroom can be used by both parties or by appointment during the day.

A lovely fruit basket awaited us on arrival.

The rooms are spacious and modern in design and decorated in neutral tones. The terrace has a rustic ambiance and is furnished with a hammock and sun loungers.

When booking, you cannot choose whether you would like to stay up- or downstairs, but you can express your wishes. Each has its advantages. Upstairs offers magnificent views, and downstairs you have direct access to the pool.

Beach Restaurant

The Beach Restaurant serves fresh local fish and vegetables cultivated in the organic garden.

Sundowners
On top of the restaurant, there is a bar and a rooftop terrace with a beautiful view of the lake.

Sustainability

The resort has its own desalination plant, a wind turbine, an organic fruit and vegetable garden, and a solar heating system. The local population is supported through and trained at the carpentry workshop. All the hotel furniture is also handmade here.

Milele Villas, Zanzibar, Africa – Luxurious, private eco beach villas on the spice island

Absolute peace, romance, privacy and luxury

This small secluded piece of paradise, comprising only two private villas, Villa Lisa and Villa Tatu, is located in the north of Zanzibar on Fukuchani beach. Each villa can accommodate up to 12 people and has its own pool.

Your dream of owning a villa on the beach can come true, even if only for a few nights. The service is excellent, there are many great extras, and the staff is caring, ensuring that guests are well taken care of! Perfect for honeymooners, friends, and families!

Hannes, originally from Austria, is the manager. He has leased the villas from a friend and fulfilled his lifelong dream of living in Zanzibar. With his team of local employees, he now tries to fulfill every wish of his guests, before they can even express them.

Milele Villas makes a substantial contribution to the lives of the local people and the environment. The eco-villas rely entirelyon solar energy and rainwater is used for the pools, showers, andtoilets. The villas are a vitalsource of income for the staff and the surrounding farmers and traders. In the future, the villas should become completely self-sufficient, by only using renewable energy resources and all food will be bought from the local farmers and fishermen.

Private Beach Villa

VILLA LISA

This spacious villa, in typical African style, is hidden behind a magnificently blooming Bougainvillea and palm trees, in an 1800 square meter garden. Comprising 350 square meters, you will find a twin and two double rooms on the ground floor and an open Africa lounge with 2 double beds and a sunset deck, upstairs. All the rooms have fans, mosquito nets, and private bathrooms. You have fantastic sea views from everywhere!

The large garden surrounding the villas is filled with indigenous trees, shrubs, bushes, andeven Baobab trees. The natural surroundings not only create a magical atmosphere, but a living space for African bird and butterfly species.

Due to the tides, there are only a few hours when you can swim in the ocean, but luckily there also is the pool!

You can eat, when and where you would like to. The service is excellent!

Mohammed always found us a beautiful spot for breakfast and dinner, even if it meant moving the tables around.

The fresh fruit (mangos, bananas, pineapples, papayas, and coconuts) either comes from the fruit trees in the garden, or from the local farmers. It is grown without the use of chemical substances or pesticides.

In the afternoon you can relax on the terrace by the pool with afternoon tea.

We had the entire villa to ourselves and could literally choose where we wanted to sleep every night.

The villas are cozy and furnished in typical Zanzibar style with unique furniture made out of old dhows (fishing boats).

There are no air conditioners, but the villa is naturally refreshed by the gentle breeze from the ocean.

From the sunset deck with its sofa on the top floor, you have mesmerizing views over the landscape and the ocean.

There are also two more beds with a bathroom in this impressive open space area.

With the walkie talkie app on the villa’s mobile phone, you can comfortably order snacks and drinks.

It is especially romantic in the evening. After a beautiful sunset, you can enjoy a three-course meal on the jetty in the water or on the sandy beach. Dinner is served every evening in an incredibly romantic atmosphere with so much attention to detail.

For Christmas, there was a fantastic BBQ with buffet, just for the two villas!

The food is sourced locally, and all the fish and seafood is bought from the local fish market. With the use of local spices, delicious dishes are served.

Private Beach Villa

VILLA TATU

“Tatu” means three in Swahili. Aptly named, because the 330 square meter villa consists of three areas: two triple rooms, two double rooms, anda lounge. On the roof terrace, you can relax wonderfully while admiring the beautiful view of the Indian Ocean.

Beach

During ebb tide, you can watch the local women collecting seaweed and marine animals such as octopus, red snapper, sea bream, and kingfish.

At sunset, the boats go out to catch tuna, mackerel and other big game fish.

Massage

In the “Full Experience” price a Swedish massage is included. For the massage, a massage bed is specially set-up in the beautiful surroundings.  Flora was our lovely massage therapist. With the sounds of the ocean and the birds in the background, we were able to relax completely.

Shop

Activities

Just around the corner from the villas, fisherman Haji Silima has a small zoo – the Fukuchani Aquarium & Zoo. He wants to support the local community with the proceeds from it.

In the zoo, you can see indigenous animals like turtles, fish, chameleons, dik-dik, different butterflies and bush babies.

In Zanzibar you can also go snorkeling or diving, just relax or go on a tour. There are tours to Jozani Forest, Sunset Cruises, a Stone Town and a Spice Tour. Nungwi Beach is a mere 15 kilometers away. Here you can find lots of restaurants and watch the local fishermen.

Conclusion

We spent Christmas here and could not have chosen a more romantic place. It is perfect for a romantic getaway and relaxation by the ocean. Muhammad even serenaded us with “Merry Christmas.” Hannes and his team, lovingly take care of their guests and offer excellent service! The villas, each with its pool, are a dream. We love the open-air design in the African style. Whether as a couple or as part of a larger group, here you find a unique and idyllic hideaway, secluded from mass tourism.

Our tip for Zanzibar: Swimming with Dolphins & Blue Safari with Locals

Snorkeling, Blue Safari  & Swimming with Dolphins

Zanzibar is a gorgeous island in East Africa, surrounded by the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Tanzania. The natural surroundings are beautiful, and you encounter many wild animals like monkeys, bush babies, turtles, and dolphins.

Dolphins are immensely fascinating beings, they have always captivated me. I have already had the privilege to swim with these majestic creatures in Mauritius and Kenya. There we were quite lucky to see them. In Zanzibar, the chance of encountering them are much higher. Even on the way back from a snorkeling trip, we saw some. This time, however, I could hear them, and I am convinced, call them! It was an unforgettable experience!

East Africa Diving

We went on a snorkeling trip from Zuri Zanzibar with East Africa Diving. That we ended up swimming with dolphins, was an absolute coincidence. Usually, everybody goes to the south to see dolphins. Our tour started in the north and went to the Mnemba Atoll. We were actually already on the way back when a few divers spotted the dolphins.

Immediately, we were told: “Put your snorkeling gear on, and get into the water!”

I was so excited that I struggled to put my mask on and got into the water relatively late and the dolphins were already far off. The divers were lucky and got into the water much quicker. Thanks to the calm waters, I could hear their whistling crystal clear. So, everyone got back onto the boat, (it is not that easy to get on to a rubber duck) and followed the dolphins, but once again, they were much faster.

I was adamant about seeing them! Everybody was making their way back onto the boat, but I stayed in the water, floating in the vast ocean. At a distance, I could see their fins. Luckily, it took some time for everybody to get onto the boat, so I had time on my side. I tried to call them, as I have seen them do in the Maldives, by whistling. There I was, alone in the ocean, whistling and whistling, when suddenly their fins came closer into sight. They really came back.

The whole school of dolphins, about 40 of them, came at me, and slowly swam around me! And they even made different sounds, almost as if they were purring. This was extraordinary! I will never forget these 25 seconds.

But, let me start at the beginning…

Ally picked us up by boat early in the morning from Zuri Zanzibar and dropped us off at the diving school.

East Africa Diving is located on Nungwi beach in the north of Zanzibar and is led by the South African Delene. She is assisted by a great team of Zanzibar captains, International PADI instructors, and PADI divemasters.

Wild cows obviously also feel very much at home on the beach.

After putting on our diving and snorkeling gear, off, we went on the 8 meters long “Zodiac” out to sea in the direction of Mnemba Atoll.

Divers have the chance to explore the coral reef to its full extent here.

There is also plenty to see for snorkelers. Although we must say, we did find it better in the south. The coral reefs there are healthier and much more bustling with sea life.

And then we were so lucky to encounter the dolphins on our way back. Ally said, that out of seven days he usually encounters them on five. So the probability of seeing some dolphins is quite high!

Blue Safari & Dolphin Cruise with Locals

Most dolphins can be found around Kizimkazi, in the south of Zanzibar. As you have to leave quite early for the dolphin cruise, it is ideal to also stay in the area.

A perfect starting point for a Blue or water safari, and a dolphin cruise is the Eco Dolphin Safari Lodge. The accommodation is basic but cozy, and the prices are low!

The locals pick you up early in the morning with a fishing boat. After a quick stop to collect the snorkeling gear at Kizimkazi fishing village, we made our way to Pungume Island, passing numerous fishing boats on our way.

The snorkeling here is fantastic. I have not seen such a well-preserved and colorful reef in a long time. There is a myriad of fish in the pristine reef. The perfect snorkeling spot!

After about an hour to an hour and a half’s snorkeling, we went to a deserted sandbank.

There we had some time for swimming and relaxation while the captains prepared a delicious BBQ.

There were fresh fish, lobster, Chapati, an East African grilled bread, with homemade dip. Yummy! And honestly, it was the best lobster we had on our entire Zanzibar trip. Freshly grilled by the locals, it was the best by far!

Our trip was organized by Astrid from the Dolphin Safari Lodge. But quite often one of the locals will walk along the beach and advertise these tours. These guys are really nice and will go the extra mile to make your trip a memorable one. And of course, they have the opportunity to make some money. In comparison to the offers at the hotel, you can get them at half price when booking directly with one of the locals. If you prefer to play it safe, booking through Astrid is reliable and good value for money.

We had a great day with Rama and his team! Thank you so much! Actually, we planned a dolphin cruise with them for the next day, but the sun is quite harsh, and we were sunburnt after spending a whole day on the boat. So, we thought it best to take a break from the sun.

Dolphin Safari Lodge
Dolphin Safari Lodge has a pool, five bungalows and safari style tented accommodation, with basic bathrooms. These tents have unbeatable ocean views. There are also five Bandas beautifully set in the natural surroundings close to the water.  The location is absolutely fantastic, the local food is delicious, and the owners, their five dogs, and the Masai are lovely. The prices at this simplistic eco-lodge are unbeatable!

Promised Land Lodge
Directly adjacent to the Dolphin Safari Lodge is the Promised Land Lodge.  We went for a walk through the lodge. It has a reggae feel, a pool, and 16 rooms. The garden is fantastic, the location is superb, and everything is well looked after.

The Residence Zanzibar – Dolphin Cruise

The Residence Zanzibar (Our Review >>) is also in the south of Zanzibar and an ideal location for dolphin cruises and snorkeling trips.

With a guide and a captain, we went out to sea early in the morning.  Mostly, these tours start very early in the morning, but you also have the chance to see dolphins later during the day.

Thanks to our excellent guides and also to the communication with other guides, we were once again lucky and also encountered dolphins on this trip.

All of a sudden, they were there! Now, we just had to wait for the right moment to jump into the water. Dolphins are fast. But with lady luck on your side, they might swim right by you! Exhilarating!

Note: Naturally, many tourists would like to swim with the dolphins because it is such a great experience. But too many boats are not a good thing.  It is already a borderline scenario. The welfare of the animals and their natural habitat should be respected, as is the case in Mauritius.  If you happen to come across dolphins by chance, it is even more spectacular, and of course, then you are alone with them. You really have to be lucky, but it can happen!

Have loads of fun!

The Residence Zanzibar by Cenizaro, Zanzibar, Africa – Exotic Hideaway

Romance, Monkeys & Dolphins at a Luxurious Beach Resort

Monkeys climb and jump around in the trees, while bright yellow birds build their nests in the palm trees and in the turquoise blue ocean you can meet dozens of dolphins. The Residence Zanzibar is an absolute paradise for humans and animals alike.

Located directly on a beautiful kilometer-long beach in the south of Zanzibar, the resort is set, in the middle of a 32-hectare lush, tropical garden.

Zanzibar is about 40 km off the east coast of Tanzania. With its palm-fringed white sandy beaches, warm-hearted people, quaint fishing villages, fragrant spice plantations, colorful markets, monkeys, dolphins and bush babies, it is a fabulous paradise in the Indian Ocean.

All 66 villas have their own pool with garden or sea views and offer a lot of privacy. You might even see a cute, small Elephant shrew scurry by and watch the monkeys climb onto the umbrella and to take a peek inside the villa.

Zanzibar has a lot of monkeys. The Red Colobus monkeys are endemic to Zanzibar. They were saved from extinction thanks to the efforts at the national park, Jozani Forest. However, these red monkeys leave the forest that is 27 km away and comfortably climb the trees at the resort. And the cheeky Black monkeys or White-throated monkeys, seem to be just as at home here.

Interview with Bruce Bowan
… the passionate General Manager of the Resort

“Our biggest asset is our people and I as a general manager I´m very proud of our team!” – Bruce Bowan

Karibu /Welcome

The elegant design of the luxurious 5-star resort is inspired by African, Omani, British and Indian influences. Everything blends in beautifully with the tropical garden and the natural surroundings.

The hospitality is typically African – loving and warm.

The monkeys sometimes even make themselves at home on the armchairs in the lobby.

Happiness comes in Waves

The beach at the resort is swept every morning. It is bright, white and miles long. The bathtub-warm water of the ocean is crystal clear and perfect for swimming at high tide.

Life is cool by the Pool

For relaxation and during low tide, the huge infinity pool beckons.

The sand may brush off.
The salt may wash away.
The tans may fade.
But the memories will last forever!!

In the afternoon, ice-cream is served as a refreshing snack at the pool.

The glass front overlooking the sea is quite spectacular!

Pool Villa Hideaway

Luxury Garden Pool Villa

The 155 square meter villas are traditionally furnished and offer plenty of space and luxury with a separate living room and bedroom.

The lounge decks have wicker armchairs and loungers overlooking the private pool and nature. Of course, a sea view is unbeatable, but even this hidden location in the tropical garden has its charm.

The king-sized covered bed ensures a deep, peaceful sleep – even with open doors. Fantastic!

One morning, the monkeys woke us. They also wanted to have a look at the villa. When they did not find any food, they decided to move on.

If you prefer privacy, you can enjoy every meal on your terrace.

With great attention to detail, the lovely employees take care of the villa and sometimes surprised us with a bouquet of flowers, flower petals on the bed or in the bathtub. Employees like Marseline, are the heart and soul of the resort!

The bright, spacious bathroom has chic double basins, a freestanding bathtub, a separate shower and private garden with outdoor shower. Here the small weaver birds bustle about.

From the bathtub, one can observe the small, bright, yellow birds building their nests. So cute to watch.

Ocean Front Pool Villas

The beautiful beachfront villas are situated right on the beach and offer breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean from every room. Pure romance!

Each villa has bicycles that one can use to explore the resort with.

While exploring, you might come across a few monkeys. And be warned, they are quite inquisitive. One jumped onto my leg, and the cheeky little bugger showed me its bum. Funny!

Good Food is Good Mood

The Dining Room

The Dining Room serves Indian, Arabic and Mediterranean cuisine with a traditional Zanzibar twist.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here with wonderful views of the beach and the sea.

The breakfast selection is extensive with fresh juices, freshly prepared egg and hot dishes!

Almost all the hotel staff in Zanzibar, come from mainland Tanzania. Together with Mr. Shams, they take care of the physical well-being of their guests with a lot of dedication.

With a little luck, the monkeys also enjoy breakfast in the trees right by the restaurant. The red fruits or sugar sachets at the tables are very tempting.

And even at the main restaurant, the weaver birds are very busy building their intricate nests. One really is surrounded by animals everywhere.

The Dining Room Bar

The quaint bar is right next to the pool and is perfect for a refreshing drink by the pool or at sunset.

The bartenders are passionate about making colorful cocktails and snacks.

Jetty Sundowner

Sundowners on the jetty with canapés and delicious wine is especially romantic. You can relax and enjoy the incredible ocean view.

Dinner is served as a themed buffet or a set menu, and the selection is very diverse.

At the Indian buffet, the chef himself can sometimes be seen at the oven preparing delicious naan bread.

The food is delicious, and every evening another exciting meal awaited us.

Roasted Duck Breast
Sweet Potato Purée & Crispy Vegetable Mango Chutney with Star anise

Entertainment in the evening is also taken care of. These three “flowery” singers, for example, always ensure that there is a great mood at dinner on Thursdays.

Beach BBQ

With dinner on the beach, all the guests can enjoy a delicious BBQ accompanied by live music with their feet in the sand.

The Pavillion

On some evenings, you can choose between The Dining Room and The Pavillon. In this somewhat remote restaurant, Mediterranean and dishes from the Middle East are served, with a touch of oriental culture and traditional music.

Keep calm and Spa on

The Spa, led by the Indian Spa Manager, has six spacious treatment pavilions, a large whirlpool, a sauna and a steam room. A variety of relaxing and beautifying treatments from the UK spa brand ila are offered. Indian Ayurveda treatments will be added soon.

Ila means “earth” in Sanskrit. Natural plant and mineral ingredients ensure well-being, healing and relaxation.

The relaxation massage is excellent and highly recommended. The charming and experienced therapists genuinely understand their craft.

After the massage, you can relax in the large whirlpool.

Activities

Yoga, tennis, cycling, fitness center activities, kayaking, paddle boat hire, Hobie cat sailing and snorkeling are included. Kite surfing, deep sea fishing, dolphin safaris, dhow cruises and scuba diving are available at an additional cost.

Yoga
One can always join a yoga class at the new yoga pavilion amidst the natural surroundings at the spa in the afternoon. It is conducted by the Spa Manager himself and is a marvelous balancing experience.

Kids Club
Children from 4 years old can visit the resort. The Smiling Monkey Kids Club has a daily changing, exciting program just for them.

Cooking class
The cooking class is really cool. With Abduly and a lot of fun and simple ingredients we learned how to cook a delicious fish curry with spinach and ugali (similar to polenta). Delicious!

Recipes: Zanzibar Fish Curry | Chicken Curry with Chappati | Spinach

Dolphin Cruise
Of course, the ultimate highlight is a boat tour with the chance to see some dolphins and even swim with them. Most boats in Zanzibar, go out to sea very early, but you still have the opportunity to find dolphins later in the day. And then there are fewer boats around.

Thanks to our excellent guides, we were lucky! When you find dolphins, you wait for the right moment and jump into the water! The dolphins are skilled swimmers, but for a few moments you can swim with them, observe them under water and sometimes even hear them.

Blue Safari
For snorkeling, you should take a trip to Pungume Island. The reef there is still pristine, and there are tons of beautiful, colorful fish. Add lunch on the beach, and you have a winning combination, a perfect day on the beach and in the sea.

Spice Tour
A Spice Tour, to the spice plantations, is a must. You also get to know the country and its people a bit better.

We visited the ZITO Spice Farm. So interesting!

In addition to nutmeg, pepper and the lipstick fruit, there is much to discover. You should also use the opportunity to buy some spices and take them home. You will not get them any fresher than here!

Mr. Butterfly (watch video) is already a bit of a celebrity. With ease, he climbs the highest palm trees and even sings while doing so. And he sings very well indeed!

With a lot of passion, unique things are made from palm leaves for the visitors. Impressive!

Jozani Forest
At Jozani Forest, the chance to see monkeys is about 50%. At The Residence, it is nearly 100%. We really saw monkeys every day. The Jozani Forest and the mangroves are still worth a visit.

Honeymoon & Wedding

The Residence is the ideal spot if you are looking for some romance. The possibilities for romantic dinners on the beach are endless.

Honeymoon Special
Honeymooners get 25% discount and an exotic fruit bowl, beach bag, a local pareo “Kitenge”, and a romantic dinner during their stay. A minimum stay of four nights applies, and the special is valid up to 9 months after the wedding.

Conclusion

We felt very much at home at The Residence Zanzibar! The variety of animals makes it utterly unique – almost as if you were in the wilderness!  Going for a leisurely ride on the bikes through the resort, taking a refreshing dip in your own pool or enjoying the sunset at the enormous infinity pool – extremely relaxing and very romantic! With great attention to detail, no effort is spared to ensure that guests have a memorable stay. The location, directly on the beach and the proximity to the dolphins, is perfect. And the endearing employees are the icing on the cake, they make your holiday unforgettable. Highly recommended!

Al Maha, Luxury Collection Desert Resort and Spa, Dubai – Desert Adventure at the Eco-Resort

Bedouin legacy at a luxurious desert camp

We traveled with our driver from the airport to the desert outside of Dubai. Along the way, we saw a few Oryx antelope roaming the magical dune and desert landscape with widesand dunes as far as the eye can see.

On the horizon, a green fabled palm oasis and the cream-colored tent roofs of the Al Maha, Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa became visible. Twenty years ago, the buried eternal spring, fed by ancient underground lakes, was given a new lease on life here.

In the style of a typical Bedouin village, now there are 42 dreamlike suites, each with its own pool, the mainbuilding with an excellent restaurant and a spa amidst the desert in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

“Under the chairmanship of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Emirates developed Al Maha as the first conservation eco-resort in the Gulf, preserving not only the desert and wildlife, but also the Bedouin heritage which developed within this environment. The Bedu have travelled this desert for over 5000 years. The legend of Al Maha, fact or fiction embodies our philosophy and we thank all who visit here for their participation on our history.”

The 5-star Al Maha, Luxury Collection Desert Resort and Spa, offers tranquility, a unique atmosphere, an authentic Arab cultural experience, attentive service, world-class cuisine, and unforgettable desert adventures. It is perfect for discerning travelers, couples and honeymooners!

Natural wonders & animal welfare

In 1997, the then crown prince and current ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, financed the first reintroduction of these symbolic animals into the desert of Al Maha, to save the Arabian Oryx antelopes from extinction and protect the fragile ecosystem of the desert.

„We are increasingly aware of the urgent need to take good care of our priceless natural heritage, all the more so as Dubai is expanding so fast. The Reserve protects our last unspoiled desert and unique Arabian way of life for future generations to enjoy.“ – HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman, Emirates & DDCR

In 1999, the Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa, with its 27 km² nature reserve, opened under the direction of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum. Almost 6,000 indigenous trees and shrubs were planted. Each one is watered via a water pipeline every 30 minutes.

The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) encompassing 225 km², was set up in cooperation with the government in2003. It is the first national park in the United Arab Emirates. Since then, the Emirates has been funding its own conservation team of ecologists and wildlife specialists, and 100% of the DDCR’svisitor income goes towards the conservation and care of the animals.

Today, the population of Oryx antelopes is recovering, andabout a thousand Oryx antelopes and gazelles livehere. The desert is also the home to the Rueppell’s fox, the Arabian red fox, rabbits, the Ethiopian hedgehog, and majestic birds of prey such as ospreys, falcons, owls andeagles, as well as pigeons, colorful parakeets and many more.

The lovable Arabian gazelles can be found everywhere in Al Maha. You can experience them up close and watch them for as long as you like. They walk around freely and feel just as much at home here as the guests. We even felt a little bit observed by them.

Seductive retreat with views of the dune landscape

The stately main building is built in the style of an old fortress and offers greats view into the vastness of the desert.

Management of the Al Maha has since been transferred to Starwood (SPG), which is why it is now part of the Luxury Collection and the Marriott Hotel group.

At this all-inclusive resort, all meals, exceptalcohol, two activities per day (falconry, camel riding, Arabian horse riding, archery, game drives, dune rides, sundowners and desert walks) are part of the package.

The chic Bedouin décor lobby offers plenty of seating, traditional rugs, old Bedouin artifacts, antique rifles, copper pots, Arabic tea, a bar with snacks and coffee, a library and a small souvenir and antique shop.

General Manager, Arne Silvis, comes from South Africa and has now been leading the Al Maha, Luxury Collection Desert Resort and Spa for 15 years with so much love and passion, that it is tangible! No wonder then that the resort has 30% recurring guest rate. We have never experienced that returning guests are welcomed as warmly as here. Here you become part of the Al Maha Family.

Glamping with safari atmosphere

Bedouin Suite

With a golf cart, we drove to our suite, of course, you can also walk, but we were told to relax, andso we did. The suites are scattered throughout the resort and offer plenty of privacy.

The Bedouin Suite is perfect for two people. The Royal and Emirates Suites are ideal for four people, andthe Presidential Suite can accommodate six people. In the small entrance area, you will find a Nespresso machine, water, a minibar, a kettle and free wine (for SPG members).

The Arabian design with its authentic antiques, dark wood, patterned Bedouin rugs and local artifacts under the big tent roof is absolutely stunning.

All doors in the light-filled suites can be opened. Gorgeous!

By the way, one is not only observed by the gazelles, but also by the countless birds. The dates and the tasty baklava pastries, which are available here as snacks, probably also have something to do with it.

Apart from the cozy sofas inviting you to relax and a desk, you will also find, binoculars and an easel with paper, pastels andpencils – such a special touch.

The bed is huge and super soft, as you would expect from the Marriott. You can sleep well and wake up to the fantastic view of the beautiful desert landscape.

The sound of birds chirping and the colors of the sky at sunrise are just spectacular! You simply have to open all the doors and become part of the magical desert landscape.

The suites are so far apart from each other and evoke the feeling of you being alone in the desert.

The view from the terrace and the infinity pool is fantastic! If there were not some exciting activities awaiting us, we could easily spend the entire day here watching the animals.

The humans are also observed.

In the beautiful bathroom with golden fittings, you will find two basins with exquisite BVLGARI products, a huge bathtub, a large rain shower and a bidet. Here you can enjoy loads of fresh air and marvel at the vast dunes.

Even though it cools down quite a bit at night, you can still use the pool, as it is heated.

Restaurant Al Diwaan

The restaurant with its large terrace has a magnificent view of the desert.

Breakfast

With birdsong all around, you can enjoy the scrumptious buffet-style breakfast while taking in the stunning view.

Lunch
Room service is available at no extra charge. If you prefer so, all meals can be delivered to your suite. Perfect if you want to spend more time away from it all.

Hajar Lounge Bar

At the chic lounge bar, Hajar, you can enjoy delicious cocktails, fine wines or an aperitif before dinner, in- or outdoors. During the sunset hours from 18:00 to 20:00, you can even have two for the price of one.

Dinner

At the cozy restaurant, 5-course, world-class international cuisine meals are served in- or outside in the evening.

The international team of chefs ranging from Poland to Kenya lovingly takes care of the culinary preferences of the guests. There is even a list where each guest is listed, noting their likes, dislikes and any food allergies. Amazing!

The food is out of this world! Chef Piotr is passionate about food, and this can be seen and tasted in the food he serves. Star-worthy indeed, but stars are not of importance to him; his guests are!

The terrace is very romantic with the blazing fire at night. If you decide to dine outside, you can also watch the gazelles.

The service is very attentive and friendly! Absolutely perfect!

The gazelle named Boriscame by every night. So sweet!

Desert Activities

The desert activities are definitely not to be missed, even if you have to get up very early for some of them. Before any of the excursions, you meet in the lobbyand can enjoy some coffee and strengthen yourself with all sorts of delicacies.

Falconry

At sunrise, 05:30 in the summer and 07:00 in the winter, when it is still cool, one can observe the guides working with the majestic hawks and owls.

After a little historical introduction, they showed us how to work with the falcons. Impressive!  Previously, they were used by the Bedouins for hunting, and today they are the feathered darlings of the sheikhs.

The hawkstake a break for 5 months a year, as it is too hot for them in summer.

The guides cannot afford to make any mistakes, such as forgetting the food as a reward. Then the hawk could just fly away, and that will be saying goodbye to USD 5000!

Hawks and owls are beautiful and fascinating creatures!

At the end of the show, you can even hold the hawks on your own.

Wild Life Drive

By jeep, off we wenton a small safari. While listening to the fascinating anecdotes of the field guides, you can observe the Oryx, after which the Al Maha is named.

This ever-shifting desert is the largest contiguous sand desert in the world and covers most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula.

Field guide Gregg comes from South Africa. He has worked there at numerous game reserves and is exceptionally knowledgeable.

A ride over the dunes is pure adrenaline and quite exciting!

Camel Trek & Sundowners

The Al Maha has 16 camels. In pairs, you can ride on them through the desert.

When it starts in the afternoon, the sun slowly sets during the leisurely ride. The desert turns orange, and the atmosphere is incredibly romantic.

After about 20 minutes, champagne and snacks await the riders, and you can sit on the dunes with a sundowner and watch the sunset.

Relaxed and happy, we made our way back to camp on camelback.

If you do not want to join the camel ride, you can also go by jeep.

Of course, there are many other activities. You also have the opportunity to ride on the resort’s beautiful Arabian horses.

Timeless Spa

The luxurious spa has a sauna, steam room, whirlpool, plunge pool, a Rasul chamber, treatment rooms, for Ayurveda treatments, forinstance, a gym and an outdoor infinity pool with beautifulviews of the dunes.

Cleansing and revitalizing facials, massages, body scrubs, manicures and pedicures are on offer.

You can relax wonderfully at the huge pool with its desert views and in the relaxation room.

Events, Honeymoon & Wedding

Al Maha, Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, is the perfect location for weddings, family reunions, special celebrations, andgroup events for up to 300 guests. There are so many ways to celebrate special occasions. Private dinners hosted among the dunes are very romantic.  A BBQ in the desert can even be arranged for largergroups.

Conclusion

The incredible attention to detail is evident everywhere. The service is personal and attentive. The activities are indeed an experience. The suites are beautiful, offer a lot of privacy and are absolutely perfect for relaxing. The tranquility and inspiring views are fantastic. The animals roaming freely throughout the resort are just magical – you want to watch them all day. This is an absolute paradise for nature and animal lovers!

Al Maha offers an unforgettable desert experience amidst the beautiful dune landscape combined with exemplary wildlife and nature conservation. It is a marvelous place to relax, which you miss time and again after leaving! Highly recommended for a relaxing, romantic and exciting break in the desert!

AVANI + Riverside Bangkok Hotel, Thailand – Lifestyle hotel with spectacular Rooftop Bar

Fascinating Panoramic View of Bangkok

Our path once again led us to Thailand. First, we stayed at the Anantara Riverside Bangkok and then we stayed at the AVANI Riverside Bangkok. The AVANI Riverside opened in September 2016 and is situated directly behind the Anantara Riverside. Both hotels belong to the Minor hotel group, and they both have fantastic views of the Chao Phraya River and the skyline of Bangkok.

The design hotel AVANI Riverside has 248 rooms and suites, fourrestaurants and bars, the AVANI spa, the AVANIFIT and a rooftop infinity pool with magnificent views.

Located right on the river, you can enjoy a quiet and secluded stay, yet it is close to the city and its colorful bustle. By shuttle boat it is only a few minutes to the Skytrain- Station “Taksin Saphan” and the night market “Asiatique.”

The Riverside Plaza, a small mall with shops, restaurants and cafes, is locatedon the lower floors of the hotel.

Modern City Hotel with Style

The stylish lobby is located on the eleventh floor and connects the reception area, the lounge, the Skyline Restaurant, the Long bar andthe Pantry at Avani, a designer deli, with each other.

Rooftop Infinity Pool

The enormous infinity pool offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the city.

AVANI River View Junior Suite

From the 62 square meter cornersuite, you can soak up the great river views through the enormouswindow directly from your bed or the bathtub.   The rooms are modern, bright and tastefully decorated.

Unfortunately, due to the height, one cannot open the window.

The bathroom is very stylish and has marvelousviews of Bangkok.

Restaurant Skyline

The Skyline Restaurant offers Thai food, international dishes and a breakfastbuffet.

With the tapas menu, the show kitchen and the bartender’s cocktail creations your gastronomical well-being is taken care of.

The view is quite simply to die for! You can spend hours here. Coincidentally, there was a small firework show on one of the boats on the river in the evening we stayed there. I can only imagine that New Year’s Eve will be spectacular here!
