MANDHARI, Shimba Hills, Kenya – a private hideaway with spectacular views (+ Video)

Wide open spaces, peace and exclusive luxury

The view into the infinite vastness is the most beautiful in Africa. And that’s exactly what makes Mandhari (Swahili for the view) really special – the view quite simply is spectacular!

This luxury property really swept us off our feet – it’s so overwhelmingly beautiful! Mandhari is located in the Shimba Hills – on top of the Golini Ridge – overlooking the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary.

It is privately owned, but can be booked for some time now for overnight stays. The 8 hectare property has only 3 rooms and offers luxury and privacy with very personal service.

We were warmly greeted by Mganda and were well looked after during our entire stay. Chef Suleman took care of our physical well-being and Salim, the third member of the team ensured our safety.

“The view into the endless horizon sometimes helps us to reflect on what might be following next” -Emil Baschnonga

The heart of the lodge and absolute highlight is the extraordinary pool directly on the edge of the ridge with its spectacular panoramic view! WOW!

You can relax and unwind on one of the sunbeds or on the various bench seats in the pool while enjoying the amazing view.

If you’re lucky, you can even see some elephants from here. Unfortunately, we did not. Many of the elephants have already been relocated to the Tsavo National Park (also to protect them from poaching). However, we read in the guest book, that many guests have seen elephants from here!

Mganda always made sure we did not lack for anything. Sunsets are magnificently beautiful to watch and are always accompanied by a sundowner with a small snack of delicious homemade crisps and vegetable sticks.

To enjoy the sunset at the pool is pure luxury!

Rooms

The rooms are also exceptional. One of the rooms is a covered tent with open-air bath, one is built into the rocks and then the family house is situated right by the pool.

Tent Lodge
We stayed in this wonderful covered tent. It is more secluded and perfect for honeymooners!

When clouds of fog float by in the morning or the sun goes down in the evening – the view is simply magical!

We love these safari tents because they are so romantic! And with the outdoor sofa, the huge carpet and the large sky bed, it is also very comfortable.

The view from the bed – awesome!

Another key feature and special highlight is the unique open-air bathroom with a tree right in the middle! It also has a shower, basin and toilet.

It is not as cold here, as in other parts of Kenya or Africa, so you can still use it at night.

Rock Bedroom
The rock room is a small cozy room right under the lounge – built directly into the rocks and it also has stunning views.

Master Lodge
The main house or family house is located directly behind the pool. It has 2 rooms with 4 beds – one room with a double bed and the room next door with single beds.

Lounge

In the center of Mandhari there is a cozy lounge. It functions as a meeting place where you can also relax and enjoy the view from. A little further down there is an even larger terrace.

In the morning and in the evening, meals are also served here. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast on the terrace.

In the evening we could choose, whether we wanted to be seated in the lounge or on the terrace outside next to the kitchen. Of course, we decided to dine outside.

From here, we could look over Suleman’s shoulder while he cooked. He spoiled us with a delicious 3-course menu of soup, chicken curry and fruit salad.

It was a bit odd that the three of them were there just to look after the two of us.

Conclusion

For a special occasion or event, like a marriage proposal, birthday party or a very luxurious time out, Mandhari is just perfect. You can book a single room or the entire property exclusively. The extra-ordinary personal service, the great design, the relaxed atmosphere and the unique location are magnificent! Relaxation, luxury and pure romance! We were thrilled!

The Sands at Nomad (Diani Beach, Kenya) – the perfect beach holiday for connoisseurs (+ video)

Dine and relax at the shore of the Indian Ocean

Happy – after numerous wildlife encounters in the Masai Mara – we returned to the turquoise Indian Ocean and to the well-known Diani Beach – the most beautiful beach in Kenya!

In Kenya, a beach holiday can easily be combined with a safari. It is a mere 10 minutes from Ukunda Airstrip, where daily flights to the Masai Mara and other national parks depart from. And from Europe you can reach this beautiful beach in just 8 hours.

Boutique resort

There are countless hotels at Diani Beach, but The Sands at Nomad is the only boutique resort. The small, beautiful 5-star resort with just 37 rooms is located directly on the white sandy beach, nestled in lush tropical vegetation. It is the sister hotel of The Sands at Chale Island. Both hotels are perfect to relax and enjoy beach life at!

The romantic resort consists of a main building with reception, a bar, an à la carte restaurant, a lounge, a 5m deep pool, a shop, a beach bar with restaurant and various rooms and cottages scattered in the beautiful forest.

We were warmly welcomed with a friendly “Jambo“, flower garlands and a welcome drink.

Interview with Richard Glaser

Claudia and Richard Glaser have been living in Kenya with their two sons for 10 years and even got married here on the beach. Both of them are now managers at Nomad and love Kenya above all else. Why? Richard tells you in our little video!

Pool

What is special about this pool is the fact that it is suitable for both children and divers! On the one side quite shallow and on the other side 5 metres deep!

The pool directly borders a large lawn area with lots of beach chairs and a view of the ocean. You are basically right on the white beach and almost in the ocean!

With the hotel’s PADI dive center “Diving The Crab”, you can even attempt your first dive and then of course there are also diving trips. Price list

The pool is open until 23:00 and the bar 24 hours every day – very cool!

Beach

The fine, sandy beach is almost as white and pure as in the Seychelles (which is also not far away). And the water temperature is bathtub-warm.

Apart from a few beach boys and walkers, the beach is often almost deserted. Some mornings we even had the beach completely to ourselves. Far and wide nothing but silence and the sound of the waves – so beautiful!

It is not a private beach, so you are addressed by beach boys from time to time, when you come out of the water – but always in a friendly manner! As soon as they see that you are not interested, they leave you in peace. And they are not allowed to enter the hotel premises.

Beach Restaurant & Bar

The restaurant on the beach is really a dream! You can relax in the comfortable sitting areas with lots of cushions and a view of the ocean and of course also enjoy delicious food.

If you can only visit two continents in your lifetime, visit Africa! -R. Elliot

Breakfast consists of a wide variety of dishes with everything you could wish for. Fresh egg dishes, pancakes and the like can be ordered from the menu.

The restaurant is also very popular with guests from other hotels and locals! For lunch you can order mouth-watering pizzas, pasta and also very delicious homemade ice cream.

In the evening the restaurant has a really cozy and romantic atmosphere! The beach bar serves delicious cocktails and the restaurant tasty cuisine at moderate prices.

Those who wish can directly book half or full board or even dine á la carte.

In a relaxed atmosphere with a light breeze you can taste original Kenyan, Italian or Japanese dishes! You are really spoiled for choice! We tried the legendary Sushi platter for two one evening. Sushi with fresh fish directly from the ocean – awesome! The next evening we tried some local cuisine consisting of delicious meat skewers and fresh fish in coconut sauce – sheer poetry! Unfortunately, we were not there long enough to try more dishes – the burgers also looked amazing!

The service in the restaurant and also in the entire hotel was always very warm and friendly. The Kenyans quite simply are very friendly people! And if you speak a little Swahili, a good atmosphere is guaranteed in any case!

Rivas Fine Dine Restaurant with its special daily menu is located at the swimming pool and is perfect for even more exclusive dinners or as a special indulgence.

Rooms

The resort has 8 Forest View Rooms that are situated close to the front desk, the pool or the beach. The 10 Sea Breeze Rooms face the ocean. The 6 Ocean View Rooms have one or two bedrooms, a private veranda and are located right on the beach. For romantic moments, there are 7 Beach Cottages with plenty of privacy, also situated on the beach. The huge Beach Cottage Superior Suite with jacuzzi is ideal for honeymooners. In the main house there are another 3 Ocean View Superior Suites with jacuzzis.

All the rooms have been beautifully decorated by Claudia paying great attention to detail. The mixture of shiny mahogany furniture, stucco, traditional Swahili architecture, African patterns & colors and maritime decor radiates warmth and comfort.

BEACH COTTAGE

We stayed in the beautiful beach cottage – tucked away behind the huge trees. The cottages are right on the beach – the view and the tranquillity are just amazing!

Each cottage has a veranda with comfortable sitting area and sun loungers on the huge lawn in front of it. The area is also guarded around the clock by security personnel. So you could also quickly jump into the ocean without even worrying about your room key.

There is a cozy four-poster bed with mosquito net, a sitting area, a desk with a view of the ocean, a quaint chest of drawers, coffee, tea and a water dispenser. All rooms are equipped with a minibar, hairdryer, safe, air conditioning, telephone, free W-Lan and 24-hour room service.

The bathroom has a shower, a bidet and also water in a glass bottle to brush your teeth with.

BEACH COTTAGE SUPERIOR SUITE

Among the Beach Cottages there is a special Beach Cottage Superior Suite which is perfect for honeymooners.

The huge suite has its own small tropical garden, which is irrigated by a hole in the roof. The suite has a jacuzzi in the back garden behind the cottage, a large canopy bed and the staircase leads to another single bed.

NOMAD SUPERIOR SUITE
This suite is located on the first floor, has a wonderful double bed and a special jacuzzi overlooking the terrace.

OCEAN VIEW DOUBLE
These rooms are also all right on the beach, they have a veranda or balcony and sun beds on the lawn in front of them.

Forest Breeze Spa

We love massages in Africa. So we decided to treat ourselves with another massage. And once again, it was so worthwhile! The “After Sun Massage” was absolutely perfect for me as I unfortunately, got sunburnt while snorkelling.

The small half-open massage huts are situated in the heart of the forest.

Massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, aerobics, Zumba or private yoga lessons are offered. Spa Menu

The therapists were extremely kind and the treatments very professional.

Honeymoon & Wedding

You can get married right on the beach and then also spend your honeymoon here or at The Sands on Chale Island.

Wedding Package
Document service, wedding certificate, wedding fees, marriage officer, decorations for the ceremony, flowers in the room, bridal bouquet and corsages, wedding cake, a bottle of champagne, manicure and pedicure for the bride, partner massages for the bride and groom (1900 EUR)

Special Honeymoon Package (ansehen)

  • Welcome drink on arrival
  • Flower arrangement
  • 1 bottle of wine and a fruit platter
  • Partner massage at the spa
  • Candlelight dinner on the beach

(Minimum stay: 3 nights in Ocean View Superior, Ocean View Suite, Beach Cottages, valid until 6 months after the wedding)

Conclusion

We especially liked the great location right on the beach! You can easily spend the whole day in the beach restaurant.  The view of the ocean is simply fantastic. The beautiful beach cottages are spacious and the location is phenomenal. You simply walk out of your room and jump into the ocean. Privacy is guaranteed as the rooms are spread out evenly in the resort. The food is really good – we would have liked to try many more dishes. The African friendliness in Kenya is very special indeed – the people are very kind, warm and friendly! We can also imagine a wedding here – just like on Chale Island!

We met many travelers, who are repeat offenders and come back to Diani Beach again and again. Understandably so – because it is simply very beautiful! We also felt very safe, for all those who think that Kenya is dangerous.

Romantic dinner
Ali Barbour´s Cave Restaurant was highly recommended to us. Dining under the stars, with candle light in a semi-open cave, should be very romantic. They will even pick you up from the hotel. (Menu)

Excursion
When you visit Diani Beach, you must make sure not to miss out on a tour with Pilli Pipa Dhow Safari in the Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park & Reserve. We could even swim with dolphins during the full day trip! Snorkeling and diving trips can also be done with them, including a delicious Swahili lunch and they pick you up from the hotel.

Beach Safari Combination
The 4 star sister hotel The Sands at Chale Island is just half an hour away on a beautiful private island. These two hotels can be perfectly combined during a round trip and also in conjunction with a safari (for example in the Mara Bush Camp).

Our Tip for Kenya: Pilli Pipa Dhow Safari – Dolphins, Sea Turtles & Swahili Seafood (+ video)

You can not only swim in the sea along the beautiful coast of Kenya, but also go diving and snorkelling.

Pilli Pipa offers full-day snorkelling trips at the Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park & Reserve with the chance of seeing some dolphins! So, of course we had to go along!

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2272

Pilli Pipa is a small family-owned business run by Selina and Harm Lutjeboer. It was founded in 1989 and some employees have been there ever since. They have a lot of experience, safety is of great importance to them and the number of guests is limited to ensure a personal service.

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2943

A driver from Pilli Pipa picked us up from The Sands at Chale Island at 06:45 in the morning. They will fetch you from any hotel at Diani beach.

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2740

From the pier in Shimoni, you then go to the boat – a chic Arabian dhow – with a sun roof.

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2275

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2279

We were lucky enough to have some dolphins swim with us!

In the protected coral reefs of Kisite Marine Park, you can discover up to 360 fish species, sea turtles and whales and with a bit of luck some dolphins might even snorkel close by, because they are so curious.

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2331

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2312

Pilli Pipa strictly adheres to the Code of Conduct to ensure that the dolphins are not hunted, disturbed or stressed in any way.

And how lucky we were!

Even as we came closer to the Marine Park, we saw a few dolphins. They even stayed with us when we got off the boat, so we could quite calmly observe them from the water. What a great experience! Even just to see dolphins nearby, is already very special! But to be this close to them, was truly spectacular!

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2470

After a few minutes we left them in peace and swam to the reef. There was still so much more to experience, for example, sea turtles.

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia

Snorkelling is more my thing… So I was very glad when Mohammed, one of the crew members, did the diving on my behalf and took some really great pictures and videos with my camera.

We spent a lot of time in the water and could explore the underwater world extensively.

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2500

We then went on to another reef with a sandbank. Once again, there was so much to discover and we had plenty of time to do so.

DCIM100GOPROGOPR3345.JPG

DCIM100GOPROGOPR3380.JPG

With us on board were the captain and four other crew members.

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2551

You can even snorkel here as a complete beginner, because you are supervised by one of the crew members the whole time.  And anyone that would like to learn to dive, this is the ideal chance to try it out!

Lunch

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2576 moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2589

Afterwards we enjoyed a mouth-watering 3-course lunch in Selina and Harm’s private home on Wasini Island. We were spoiled with crab, red snapper, coconut rice, sweet potatoes and many other tasty dishes.

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2615

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2645

I enjoyed the roasted seaweed most! Wine, beer and juice were on offer.

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2675

At the end of the meal, you could enjoy dessert with coffee or tea in the Day Dreamer’s Lounge with a view of the water.

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2638

If you feel like it, you can visit the caves where slaves were once captured, after the snorkelling trip.

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2736

What a great and eventful day! Dolphins are such beautiful animals!

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2739

We were back in the hotel at about 19:00.

moniquedecaro-pilli-pipa-kenia-2226

Conclusion

The tour is really worth it. To see some dolphins, luck has to be on your side, but there are also plenty of great fish to see! The boat was not too crowded and the crew was always looking for interesting fish to show us. The whole team was very nice and took great care of us all. And we did notice that they really respect the welfare of the animals! Lunch was also really delicious! So, it does not matter whether you want to dive or snorkel, we highly recommend this tour!

Mara Bush Camp – Private Wing, Masai Mara, Kenya – Ecotourism, Luxury & Lions (+ Video)

Wild romance and unforgettable safaris with guaranteed big cat sightings in the land of the Masai

The Masai Mara is a part of the Serengeti and the beautiful landscape that almost everyone knows from the movie “Out of Africa”. And who have not heard about the great Masai warriors with their red robes? That is where we went. We visited the Masai, the wide-open savannahs and one of the areas with the biggest variety of wild animals in Kenya.

Mara” means “spotted” or “dotted” in the Masai language. A land spotted with thorn trees, animals and shadows of clouds.

During our two and a half hour flight in a small Mombasa Air Safari plane, we flew past Kilimanjaro, from Diani Beach (Ukunda) to Olkiombo Airstrip.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3226

We love the vastness, the nature, the people and the animals in Africa! Getting out of the small plane was almost like coming home. Africa feels like our second home. Only someone that has already been there will be able to understand!

A fee is charged in Kenya, when you stay in a national park. The good news is this fee is used to combat poaching.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3242

After our flight, we were picked up by Simon, a guide from the Mara Bush Camp. But, instead of going to the camp, we went straight on our first small safari.

moniquedecaro-3235

Past the hyenas, antelopes, topis and huge herds of buffalo we comfortably drove to the camp. Unfortunately, there were no lion sightings, but that was yet to come. It is almost guaranteed that you will see lions in the Masai Mara, because it is one of the areas with the most lions in the world.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3648

Spectacular: Every year between July and October thousands of wildebeest and zebra from the wildebeest migration are on the plains of the Masai Mara. However, during our time there in November, they had already grazed everything and migrated. There were only small isolated herds left, which had no desire to move on.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-5952

We were fortunate enough that almost all the animals just had their young.  Small baby animals were to be seen everywhere!

Mara Bush Camp – Private Wing

One of the best camps in the Masai Mara is located in the bush, in the heart of the Masai Mara Game Reserve and directly on the banks of Olare Orok River. It consists of two small eco-friendly camps, Mara Bush Camp & Mara Bush Camp – Private Wing, each with 12 tents.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-5167

The tents in the Private Wing offer a lot of luxury and are built on wooden platforms. In comparison, the tents in the Mara Bush Camp are directly on the ground.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3341

Off the beaten track, the Mara Bush Camp – Private Wing offers complete privacy, it is centrally located and thanks to the manager, the lovely staff and the Masai, it also offers very friendly and personal service.

Interview with Camp Managerin Michela Consiglio

We spoke with the Italian manager Michela. In the interview, she tells us a little more about the camp and its heart for social projects.

Michela takes great care of the well-being of her guests. She is the very soul of the camp and almost always there, just in case, she would be needed. We had a great time with her and her team.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3361

Bar tent

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3507

The camp has a cozy bar tent with lots of seating, comfy sofas, books and a beautiful view of the river.

With a delicious drink in hand from bartender John you can just relax.

Photo Lounge

There is a separate photo lounge for photographers. Here you can recharge batteries and view the images of the day. There also is a small shop with all sorts of beautiful things by local artists.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3958

Eco-friendly tourism

The camp was erected in harmony with nature by Sunworld Safaris, is operated environmentally friendly and still has every luxury! Both camps received silver awards from the ECO TOURISM SOCIETY in 2014. Camps that save water, energy and reduce the production of waste are awarded annually.

DCIM100GOPROGOPR3438.JPG

As with the Nkasa Lupala Tented Camp in Namibia, this camp can also be completely dismantled and would not even leave a trace. The soap is handmade and electricity and hot water are produced entirely from solar energy. There is a generator, only in case of an emergency. And even the wastewater treatment system of the flush toilets is based on a biological basis. Learn more >>

Bush tents

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-5052

All the tents are far apart and offer a lot of privacy. Eight tents, including two family tents, are located directly on the river and four more are hidden in the forest.

moniquedecaro-kenia-5273

The tents are very generously in size, have comfortable four poster beds with mosquito nets (or twin beds), an en-suite bathroom, a safari-style shower, wardrobe, desk and private veranda with sofa and deckchairs.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3394

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-1144

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3442

There are soft plush carpets everywhere. All handmade – I would love to have some of them at home! The furniture is also made locally and exudes that true safari feeling.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3380

Fresh water is provided daily for tooth brushing and drinking in an eco-friendly glass container. The shower water (warm water from 17:30 to 20:30) comes from a nearby well.

We stayed in one of the (family) tents that has a veranda right by the river. Pure luxury and wilderness! At night we could hear the hippos snort. Sometimes it seemed as if they were right next to the tent.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3400

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3402

The camp has no fences, so you may not even walk around alone at night As soon as we came out of the tent there was always a Masai waiting to accompany us.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-4118

Sunrise Safari

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3529

You have to get up early in Africa, if you want to go on safari. Every morning, just after sunrise at 6:30 on the dot, we left with Simon on our morning game drive.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-4132

And it is well worth it, many animals are active in the morning, so you get too see plenty of them. If you would like to, you can also do some game watching from a hot air balloon.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-5604

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3703

Especially the big cats are at their most active in the morning and in the evening.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-5850

We did not think it was possible to see so many animals, especially lions in the Masai Mara. Absolutely impressive! On our six game drives in three days, we saw 18 lions – nine of them were just a few months old.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-5714

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-5762

Simon could even tell us the name of every lion. These ones are, for example, Morani and Scarface (he lost an eye in a fight).

And the two here, with their full bellies comfortably dozing after the hunt, are Blacky and Lipstick. Lions are almost always seen in twos and quite often they are brothers.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-4351

We were lucky to also see many elephants. With the help of rangers and by educating the locals they are well protected here in Kenya!

Another highlight was these two lionesses with their just caught prey and four young cubs.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-4609

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-4611

We saw lots of lions, jackals, giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, cheetahs, leopards, wildebeest, various birds, antelopes, zebras, warthogs and hyenas. Only the rhinoceroses are unfortunately very seldom seen.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-5938

Breakfast in the bush

Of course you get a delicious breakfast in the camp after your morning safari. We thought it was really cool that we could take our breakfast along with us on the game drive! A great idea so that you can be out and about for longer – instead of 9:00, we only returned to camp at 11:00.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-6187

Right on the Mara River, next to crocodiles, hippos and in the company of countless birds, we were served breakfast on the bonnet of the jeep.

At noon lunch is served at the wonderful outdoor Al Fresco Restaurant. This is so special. The tables are set up far apart from each other and the ambience is simply unique!

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3351

The cheerful chefs and Masai offer delicious African, Indian or even Italian dishes buffet style as well as some  “live cooking”.

Hippo Deck

The special thing about this camp is the Hippo deck with Hippo Pool. From the cozy observation deck you can watch up to 60 hippos at once.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3364

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-5243

We were even able to watch a very young hippo that has just been born, during his first swimming exercises.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-5789

Sunset Safari

At 16:00 we went on our next game drive. It is always exciting to see which animals you will encounter this time round.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-4174

Again, we had good luck and Simon had a real sense of finding us lions! This time we were able to watch the lionesses and their cubs again.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-6080

The lionesses also move in pairs, if one is on the hunt, the other one takes care of the young.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-6514

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3688

We almost saw a hunting leopard in action, but unfortunately it was getting dark and we had to return to the camp. Leopards are very patient hunters!

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-6366

Dinner

One of the best things about Africa is the evening campfire! Wildly romantic with the soft glow of paraffin lamps, it is the place to relax and enjoy interesting stories.

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-4059

Dinner is served outdoors under the starry African sky. If it rains, you get to enjoy your meal in the chic dining tent.

Surrounded by solar lamps delicious 3-course meals are served. Very romantic! A wide variety of dishes were on offer and the food was always very delicious!

moniquedecaro-mara-bush-camp-kenia-3977

Social projects l Travel and do good

40% of the employees are from the local Masai community. The “Bed Night Fees” entirely goes to the local community. As such, tourism contributes considerably to improving the quality of life in the entire region.

The Camp Manager Michela and Sunworld Safaris have set themselves the task to promote and support local artists and girls, especially.

A wonderful project is the recycling of plastic – Eclastic (Eco & Plastic) – “Buy Eclastic and not Ivory”! Beautiful jewellery and accessories are made from old plastic bottles or DVDs, which are also sold in the shop of the camp.  Currently, 20% of the proceeds are used to teach the Masai women how to produce sell and jewellery from plastic. More information can be found on www.eclastic.org.

A brand new product is “The Elephant with a Message” chains – cute little elephants made from recycled plastic in different colors and with sayings like “Dreams come true”, “Enjoy each day”, “I can and I will”, “You are special”, “You are loved” or “Keep going”. With the proceeds Mara Bush Camp adopts orphans from The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. So far, two orphaned elephants have been adopted.

You can help!

Sunworld Safaris and Mara Bush Camp also support the Olmalaika Home, a shelter for young Masai girls that helps to protect them against forced marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).You can also help these girls by fulfilling a couple of requests on their wish list. (Insights are given in Kim DeWitt’s video)

Conclusion

Masai Mara

We love the Masai Mara and this camp! It is wonderful romantic and you just feel completely at ease! Right from the word go we were lovingly cared for by all the staff. We were able to experience very impressive game drives with our guides, ate delicious food and enjoyed the peace and quiet of nature very much! Our tent was really cozy – a mix of pure luxury and safari feeling! The Masai are incredibly warm-hearted people and there is so much wildlife to be seen – you have to experience it yourself! You see more animals than you ever would expect to. We would have loved to stay longer!

Some insight into the Mara Bush Camp:

The other, somewhat wilder, but equally beautiful part of the camp is just a few minutes away. It is similar in structure to the Mara Bush Camp – Private Wing. All the tents are located on the river tucked away in the bush and are far apart from each other. The only difference is that the tents are directly on the ground and when you want to shower, you first have to order your warm water. It is then heated beforehand. Apart from that, it also has a dining tent, a bar tent, a photo lounge and an al fresco restaurant with a romantic fire place! We found both camps great!

The Sands at Chale Island, Diani Beach, Kenya, Africa – Romance & the ocean

Luxury & nature pure on a secluded island

After we went to Namibia last year and to South Africa in April, we finally got to visit Africa again – this time we went to Kenya.  We have wanted to go there for a long time!  The combination of beach and safari is really awesome!

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-007

And we are off to the coast. The flight to the Kenyan coast only takes 8 and a half hours.  We flew non-stop over night with Condor from Frankfurt to Mombasa.  You land very early and also depart early again, but actually that is good, because otherwise you would probably be stuck in traffic.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-009

At the airport we were picked up punctually by a driver from D.M.Tours.  Driving on your own in Kenya is not recommended.  Sections of road are rather undeveloped and the Kenyans are not exactly considerate drivers. With your own driver you can sit back, relax and  start your holiday.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-012

After an approximately 2 hour drive we reached the pier to Chale Island (about 12 km south of Diani Beach).

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-016

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-013

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-017

At low tide you will be picked up here with the tractor and at high tide with the boat, of course.

moniquedecaro-2993

After a short crossing (600 m) we were finally there – on the only island and one of the most environmentally friendly hotels in Kenya, the 4 star hotel resort, The Sands at Chale Island.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-018

We were heartily welcomed with a warm “Karibu” – the Swahili word for welcome!

Interview with Richard Glaser

We met with Richard Glaser the manager of The Sands at Nomad & Chale Island! Richard has been living in this beautiful country with his wife Claudia and 2 sons for 10 years. He loves Kenya above all else. Let him tell you why.

“Once you are infected with the Africa virus, you have to come back here again and again” – Richard Glaser, GM The Sands

Chale Beach

Right next to reception is the beautiful powdery white sandy beach, the Indian Ocean and one of the most beautiful beaches in Kenya.  Depending on the tides you can snorkel, swim or relax on the sun beds with a delicious cocktail or “Tusker” beer (a well-known beer brand in Kenya).

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-025

The water temperature is at least 26° Celsius – that is almost bathtub warm!

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-028

There are no beach boys on this private beach, but wood carvers, who offer beautiful sculptures and carvings.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-037

As you are in the east of Kenya, you can watch the beautiful sunrise from here.  If you want to see the sunset, you should stay in one of the Overwater Suites on the other side of the island.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-118

“Talking to each other means loving one another.” -from Kenya

What we particularly love about Africa are its friendly people!  From the beginning to the end of our trip we met such lovely people.  And the staff on Chale Island was sweet, friendly, open and very accommodating.  We had a lot of fun with them!

Pool

The hotel has 3 swimming pools.  The central pool has a large jacuzzi and is very warm.  Unfortunately, it is only open until 19:00, but you can enjoy it until sunset.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-069

Another pool with pool bar is located between the Towers, right at the ocean.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-068

A third salt water pool with direct access to the ocean can be found on the other side of the island – at the spa and fitness center.

Rooms and Suites

The accommodation is environmentally friendly and buildings are constructed from natural Kenyan materials such as wood and bamboo.  The accommodation facilities are spread out through the island and offer a lot of privacy!  There are the standard and superior Bandas, the Towers with double rooms and penthouse suites, the Overwater Suites and the Suite on the Rocks.  The suites are just perfect for honeymooners!

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-050

For the sake of the environment, electricity is only available in the rooms from 6pm until 10am with the exception of the Penthouse and Overwater Suites as well as the Suite on the Rocks.  If you want to recharge something, you are welcome to do so at the front desk.  The safe is also located there.

All rooms have sea views, air conditioning, fans, showers and a terrace or balcony.  The interesting mix of Swahili style, Italian stucco, antique Lamu and mahogany furniture is very cozy.

The Bandas

The comfy Bandas have palm-thatched roofs, a private front garden, a veranda with sun beds, a Swahili day bed and great views of the ocean, the beach, the lagoon, the channel or the mangroves.  The superior bandas also have large glass doors and outdoor showers.

The Towers

There are 40 double rooms and 2 penthouse suites in the two towers.  The standard semi-circular rooms have large balconies each with a Swahili day bed.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-062

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-063

The penthouse suites are located above the tree tops at the top of the towers. They have a separate living room, a water dispenser, a minibar, a huge balcony, a lounge on the 2nd floor and a jacuzzi on the roof with a 270 degree sea view.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-046

We stayed in one of these beautiful penthouse suites – in the North Tower.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-041

The large balcony with its breathtaking view is a real dream!

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-040

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-053

The rooms and the bathroom are decorated in warm African colors with gorgeous materials.  Very comfortable!

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-051

The highlight is the rooftop jacuzzi with its beautiful view!

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-065

 Overwater Suiten

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-105

The Overwater Suites are unique in Kenya.  They are secluded and located on the northwest of the island and have beautiful views of the ocean, Bird Island, Gazi Bay and fantastic sunsets.  They have large bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and an additional living room.  On the veranda they also have a jacuzzi, sun beds, a day bed and a ladder that leads directly into the sea.  You really have peace and quiet here and can spend some wonderful romantic moments.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-106

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-014

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-038

Suite on the Rocks

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-029

A very special suite is located directly on the beach on a small separate islet and is connected to the main island by a stone bridge.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-027

Rainwater can flow through a hole in the roof directly into a miniature garden in the center of the suite and a circular staircase leads to the upper lounge.  A special highlight is the jacuzzi on the reef with a sun terrace with sun beds and a Swahili day bed for relaxing.

moniquedecaro_sands_nomad-8284

Culinary highlights

Buffet restaurant
The hotel offers meals on half board, full board and all inclusive basis.  In the evening, delicious themed buffets are served with Oriental, Mediterranean and traditional Kenyan cuisine.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-074

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-075

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-080

Highly recommended are the live grill stations with the catch of the day in the evening or eggs in the morning.  The food is very delicious and diverse!  Our tip: At the back of the restaurant, behind the live stations, there are more tables and couches.

Bars
Snacks, afternoon tea and of course, drinks are offered at the main bar “Chapateria” at reception.  The “Galana” pool bar is located at the pool between the towers.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-083

Maisha Poa Spa

The “Maisha Poa” (Swahili: good life) Spa is located in the middle of the island, surrounded by beautiful nature.  The semi-open treatment houses are spread out over the tidal lake in the middle of the mangrove forest.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-094

We enjoyed an excellent aromatherapy massage!  Massages in Africa are very special indeed and definitely not to be missed!

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-097

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-096

Thanks to our therapists, Amon and Dorcas, we were able to relax completely. Spa Menu

Shops

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-092

Souvenirs, sun cream!  And all things nice can be found in the two shops between the main pool and the two towers.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-093

Forest Walk

During the Forest Walk with Erick you can explore the sacred forest (Kaya) and visit another beach.  When the inhabitants of the local communities are worried, they come into the forest to pray, for example, for rain.  When their prayers have been answered, they come back and happily celebrate with a beach barbecue.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-102

On our way, we met two boys who just grilled their freshly caught blowfish for lunch.

Honeymoon & Wedding

This island is the perfect place for a honeymoon or dream wedding right on the beach with the Indian Ocean in the background!  If you like, you can also get married in complete privacy on the Suite on the Rocks’ veranda.

Wedding Package

Document service, marriage certificate, wedding fees, wedding officer, decoration for the ceremony, room flowers, bridal bouquet and corsage, wedding cake, a bottle of champagne, manicure and pedicure for the bride, partner massage for the bride and groom (all for € 1900)

  • Floral arrangement
  • Bottle of wine and fruit platter
  • Partner massage in the Spa
  • Candlelight dinner on the beach

(Minimum stay requirements: 3 nights in Bandas or Suites, valid for up to 6 months after the wedding.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-107

We were lucky enough to witness a beach wedding.  For the celebration, tables were set up on the beach and lanterns and fairy lights enhanced the romantic atmosphere.  Wonderful – by day and at night!

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-111

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-108

The ceremony on the beach, with the sounds of the ocean in the background, singers and floral decoration,  incredibly beautiful and so romantic!

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-115

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-116

It was so sweet – the hotel staff was also curious and watched the whole ceremony hidden behind a tree!

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-121

Romantic dinner on the beach
With romantic lanterns and your toes in the sand, you can sit back and relax while being served a delicious 4-course menu.

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-086

Water sports & more

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-030

For the more energetic, the diving and water sports center “Diving the Crab” offers a variety of water sports such as snorkeling, glass bottom boat trips, kayaking, windsurfing, deep sea fishing, catamaran sailing and diving (PADI/SSI).  With some luck between November and February, you can even watch whale sharks. Diving the Crab Price list

moniquedecaro-kenya-chale-island-036

At reception, there is a notice board with a new list of activities every day, such as the Forest Walk with Erick, a snorkeling course in the pool, snorkeling tours, yoga and much more. You should also make sure you do not miss the Giriama dance group’s performance!

Conclusion

We found it incredibly magnificent on this dream island with its extremely beautiful natural surroundings, the great beach and the warm hearted staff.  They made our stay here unforgettable.Due to the fact that the rooms/bandas are spread out, it never seems full and there are many romantic and hidden corners. I do not think we have even discovered everything in our 3 days. And then there is also the wonderful climate – the same as in the Seychelles! Fantastic and highly recommended!

Hog Hollow Country Lodge & Villa, Garden Route, South Africa – Romantic fireplaces & adventure for families and couples + restaurant tips (+ video)

Crackling fireplaces, beautiful nature and plenty of animals between the Tsitsikamma Mountains and the Indian Ocean

Hog Hollow Country Lodge is one of the most popular lodges in South Africa. It is situated in a private nature reserve on the Garden Route, 18 kilometres east of Plettenberg Bay with breathtaking views of the Matjies River Gorge and the Tsitsikamma Mountains.

Andy Fermor and his wife Debbie bought the lodge in 1993 and have developed it since into a small jewel with 16 suites, a villa and a country house. Families and couples feel right at home here.

moniquedecaro-3708

In the video you will find a few impressions of the lodge and also a short interview with manager Jo Melton Butler (Josi) – she is such a charming person!

In the main area of this 4 star lodge you will find 3 lounge areas, the restaurant and a spacious terrace with many comfortable sofas and fireplaces.

“If you can spend a perfectly useless afternoon in a perfectly useless manner, you have learned how too live.° – Lin Yutang

moniquedecaro-hog-hollow-3211

On the large terrace you can relax and unwind or end the day at one of the cozy fireplaces in the evening. Sometimes a few monkeys will even pass by.

There is no telephone or TV, but instead the most stunning panoramic views!

moniquedecaro-hog-hollow-3232

moniquedecaro-hog-hollow-3699

moniquedecaro-hog-hollow-3260

We enjoyed the fireplace in our room! To fall asleep by the crackling fire was so beautiful and romantic! And if it rains, it is even cozier.

moniquedecaro-hog-hollow-3654

Highlight: you can open the large glass stack sliding doors in the room and bathroom completely.

moniquedecaro-hog-hollow-3227

One should only leave the doors open though, while you are there. And leaving anything outside on the terrace, is also not a good idea – because the monkeys do like to drop by!

moniquedecaro-hog-hollow-3271

Another animal guest that also liked to pop in, is the lodge’s pet cat! She decided that it was much nicer with us at the fireplace, than outside in the rain!

Villa

The lodge also has a villa. It is located about 400 metres from the main building. Families or up to 3 couples can comfortably stay here. The villa also has a games room, a kitchen, a dining area, a fireplace, an infinity pool and a barbecue. It is perfect for families with children.

Country House

The Country House has just been rebuilt and is very chic and tastefully decorated and it has all been done by owner Andy himself!

HillsNek Safari Camp, South Africa – Luxury, Romance & Conservation in the Amakhala Game Reserve (+ Video)

Safari Feeling in a romantic HIDDEN GEM

We simply love Africa! The scenery, the people, the animals, the great wine and delicious food! And then there is this safari lodge that we visited on our South Africa trip, it is a lodge that you will never forget! It was the last stop on our trip along the Garden Route.

moniquedecaro-hillsnek-4406

The family-run safari lodge with four tents is located adjacent to the Addo Elephant National Park in a remote corner of the Amakhala Game Reserve in the malaria-free Eastern Cape. Once used as farmland by the British settlers, the reserve was established in 1999 as a nature conservation area of about 7,000 hectares. Since then nature has been left to take its own course and many animal species that have been decimated by hunting, were also resettled.

moniquedecaro_hillsnek

The descendants of the original Frontier settler families today run 9 independent lodges with lots of privacy and exclusivity. One of them is the extraordinary HillsNek Safari Camp, situated on the banks of the Bushman’s River.

Amakhala is the Xhosa word meaning Aloe and these indigenous plants are found everywhere here.

moniquedecaro-hillsnek-south-africa

The lodge is situated about an hour from Port Elizabeth Airport. When you enter the reserve, you can park your car and will be picked up in a jeep.

Lodge

The public areas of the lodge includes a large open plan lounge with a comfortable sofa, armchairs, a fireplace, a pool, a bar and several dining areas.

moniquedecaro-hillsnek--4160

The lodge has been beautifully designed in the African safari style by the owners, Chantelle and Brent, personally! All the furniture and decorations were handpicked and collected by them over many years.

hillsnek_moniquedecaro-4157

Small groups or families can book the lodge exclusively.

Pool

You can take a dip in the small stone swimming pool or relax on the deckchairs. Sometimes a few elephants might even come by to quench their thirst. But of course, you need a bit of luck, to be at the pool at just the right time!

Team

hillsnek_moniquedecaro_chantelle

Chantelle Cook and her husband Brent, are the owners of this small safari lodge. Guests are lovingly cared for by manager Renzo, Jaison, who is such a good-hearted soul, the chefs and the rest of the great team.

Luxurious safari tents

The romantic tented chalets are spread far and wide and they are all connected to the main lodge by wooden walkways. Here absolute peace and privacy are guaranteed! All tents have a wooden deck with sun loungers, an en-suite bathroom with tub, a romantic outdoor shower, a cozy sitting area, a desk with coffee and tea making facility, a generously stocked minibar, electric blankets, a heater and a fan. You have a great panoramic view over the landscape from the wooden deck, the bath and even from your bed (when all the canvassed windows are rolled up). And instead of a TV, you have bush TV, which is much more interesting!

Honeymoon Safari Tent

The honeymoon tent is the newest of the four tents and is the most secluded.

moniquedecaro-hillsnek-4256

To wake up here in the morning, when one happens not to be on safari, is just gorgeous! With all the birds chirping, you almost feel as if in a bird’s nest!

The bathroom is a real safari dream! Wildly romantic, you can relax in the bathtub or shower outdoors! It is somewhat unusual to shower outside, but very special indeed!

Safari Tent for families

The family-friendly lodge also has a family tent. It is adjacent to the main area, has an extra bed and an additional small room with a fold-out bed for the young ones. Children also get a goodie bag with all sorts of cool things to keep them busy.

moniquedecaro-hillsnek-4622

Culinary delights

HillsNek Safari Camp is all inclusive and consequently you are spoiled and pampered with African delicacies and drinks all day long. After a few days you are actually not hungry anymore, but everything is so delicious, that you still have to try it all!

Breakfast

After you have been affectionately woken at half past five with aromatic coffee, the first breakfast before the morning game drive is served at the flickering fire. After a delicious muffin, you are ready for the game drive.

hillsnek_moniquedecaro-4748

The second breakfast is then served after the game drive, and includes everything your heart could desire such as fancy egg dishes.

hillsnek_moniquedecaro-4155

Lunch

For lunch you can enjoy a light 2-course menu consisting of a main course and dessert. For the main course there are quite a few options to choose from. So you are spoiled for choice!

hillsnek_moniquedecaro-4572

The chefs here consistently prepared the tastiest dishes! There is always a choice between meat, for example, kudu and vegetarian dishes.

hillsnek_moniquedecaro-3839

Dinner

For dinner, a delicious 3-course meal is served at the communal table. You can always choose from at least 2 main courses. And if you would prefer to dine alone as a family or honeymooners, there are also other tables available.

Safari

We went on open jeep game drives with ranger Brad in the morning at 6 o’clock and in the afternoon at 4 o’clock. With some luck you might get to see one of the Big 5 and some of the more than 60 mammal and 250 bird species such as elephants, giraffes, lions, white and black rhinos, zebras, cheetahs, hyenas, buffalo and various kinds of antelope. In our opinion the safari jeeps were sometimes too crowded, but we were assured that this is not always the case.

DCIM101GOPROGOPR2313.

Anyone interested can also go on boat trips on the Bushman’s River as well as on guided bush walks.

Morning Safari

In the morning it can still be quite cold – so wrap up warmly! But when the fog lifts and the sun rises, the experience is worth getting up early for. The landscape is just beautiful in the first morning light and the animals are at their most active.

hillsnek_moniquedecaro-3984

We decided to skip the early morning game drive the one day, because it was so very cold, but then immediately regretted our decision as we missed out on seeing a huge herd of elephants! You just never know what you might get to see!

Animal Protection, Conservation & Social Welfare

HillsNek Safari successfully contributes to the protection and preservation of the white rhino (Southern White Rhino Ceratotherium Simum). The whole Amakhala Game Reserve is carefully monitored and the white and black rhinos are protected from poachers. When two rhino bulls were killed by poachers in 2010, the non-profit organization “Chipembere Rhino Foundation” was founded. HillsNek now donates a certain percentage of its overnight rates to the Chipembere Rhino Foundation and the Amakhala Foundation (Social Development Programs and Conservation). Consequently, every visiting guest contributes to the social projects, the protection of rhinos and nature conservation!

Conclusion

We loved this beautiful lodge. The cozy tent, dinner in the privacy of our own tent, the romantic outdoor shower, the campfire after safari, having a glass of wine while watching the incredible African sunset on your own wooden deck and of course the starry sky at night, it is all very romantic. The tents provide plenty of luxury & privacy and the lodge with its typical African style radiates warmth and romance. The secluded location, personal service and the entire atmosphere in the middle of the African wilderness are quite simply breathtaking. And if you are still able to make a difference at the same time – it is even better!

Belmond La Residencia, Deià, Mallorca – Luxury, Art and Culinary delights in the Tramuntana Mountains (+ Video)

A sophisticated hotel with character & history

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-5950

After we photographed and filmed a wedding in the south-east of Mallorca, we arrived in an oasis of peace, where the air is filled with the sweet smell of flowers and oranges. In my opinion, the idyllic north-west of Mallorca has something magical about it! This five-star luxury boutique hotel that I chose for us, also has an exceptional atmosphere! I already found the pictures extremely beautiful, but my expectations were exceeded!

The Belmond La Residencia in Deia is one of the most intimate and luxurious hotels in Mallorca and one of the best hotels in the Balearic Islands. Even Hollywood stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Moss, Gwyneth Paltrow and Tom Hanks treasures this gem.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-5965

In a romantic Mediterranean setting, situated on the edge of the Tramuntana Mountains, between olive and citrus groves, you will find this retreat where you can relax and unwind! You can enjoy spectacular views of the picturesque mountain village of Deia, the winding roads and imposing mountains from almost everywhere. No wonder that so many artists have settled here in the past 50 years.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6273

Apart from all kinds of fun activities, such as tennis, rock climbing, exploring the island by Vespa, hiking, painting and sculpture lessons or taking a boat trip or going on a picnic with one of the resident donkeys, above all else, you can unwind and take a break from everyday life while enjoying wonderful food!

There are 3 pools, a spa, a hair salon, a kids’ club, 4 restaurants and a bar.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6274

This 16th century estate with its lush gardens and rooms distributed over several levels fits perfectly into the landscape and feels like a small village that you can get lost in. The former Richard Branson estate was converted into a luxury hotel in 1980 and has been part of the Belmond Collection since 2002.

Pools

The hotel has 2 outdoor pools, one that is for adults only, and an indoor pool in the spa.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6185

We found the magnificent and huge pool to be a real highlight! A true oasis where you can spend the whole day – which is exactly what many of the guests did. The pool is always heated to a pleasant temperature.

Tips for Trips

Cala de Deia

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6664

We went down to the Cala de Deia beach. The 3km takes about 30 minutes on foot. It is a very nice walk down to the water’s edge through narrow streets and past imposing olive trees, but you can also hop on the hotel’s shuttle service.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6661

This little bay is not very suitable for bathing, as it is a bit difficult to get to the water over the pebbles and rocks and you also have to be careful of the jellyfish! The trip is still very worthwhile, especially for the picturesque setting and also to have a small bite to eat in one of the two restaurants.

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6682

To get back to the hotel, we then lazily decided to rather use the shuttle service that picked us up right at the beach.

Conclusion

moniquedeacaro-belomond-la-residencia-6485

This retreat is the perfect place to completely relax and unwind, enjoy nature and the pleasant surroundings and be pampered all day long. The service is really good! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! It is equally perfect for honeymooners and families. Throughout the village like estate there are quiet corners and plenty of space for everyone. For families, the kids’ club with painting classes and many other activities, certainly is very interesting. There also is plenty to see and do for the more adventurous. It is in a slightly higher price range, but well worth it for this ultimate luxurious oasis of privacy, ambiance, excellent gourmet food and personal service. It is the perfect setting for that special occasion, such as a wedding proposal, a short luxurious getaway, honeymoon or even a wedding!

Rooms: 67 Rooms and suites, 1 villa
Transfer: Situated 35 km from the airport
Parking: Private car park
Minibar: Available
Air Temperature: 4 to 32°C
Water Temperature: 14 to 22°C

Makumu Private Game Lodge, Kruger Park, South Africa – Luxury and Spectacular Safaris (+Video)

Our adventurous story of leopards, elephants
and Gin & Tonic

We sit at night in the dark under a Marula tree. Dry African soil beneath our feet. Above us the bloody prey of a leopard. We have experienced so much here in such a short time. Now we only still need to see leopards, elephants and buffalo and our Big Five list will be complete.

The leopard must have been here recently. That is evident from the remains in the tree above us. Firmly anchored in the branches. Will we finally get to see him? Leopards are very shy during daytime and can also hide very well. That is why we are here now. In the dark. In the middle of the bush. No light. No noise. Pretty exciting. I even confuse Sabrina’s growling tummy with a wild animal. Chris quietly goes around the tree. And there he is! Well-fed and not agitated at all. Very relaxed, the leopard rolls over onto his back. And looks at me. The look in his eyes. Goosebumps. Unbelievably touching.

Let us start at the beginning: After our road trip from Cape Town to the Eastern Cape, we flew from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg and then onto the small airport of Hoedspruit. Our trip to the Makumu Private Game Lodge in the Kruger National Park could begin.

moniquedecaro-makumu-4782

When we arrived at the airport, we were warmly welcomed by ranger Chris. With a cold drink in hand on the open safari jeep, we were on our way to our first mini safari.

moniquedecaro-makumu-4785

moniquedecaro-makumu-5866

After about an hour we were there, in the middle of nowhere, in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. Klaserie is one of the largest private reserves in the country, about 60,000 hectares, and part of the Kruger National Park. This is the part of South Africa where you get to see most of the wild animals.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5142

This exceptional luxury lodge offers complete privacy, unique all-inclusive luxury, peace and quiet in a relaxing atmosphere and beautiful nature.

The reserve and the lodge belongs to Stefan, a German. Once built as a luxury bush lodge for himself and his guests, the lodge was opened a few years ago to guests from around the world. Lucky for us!

moniquedecaro-makumu-4831

The former private house has a two-story living area and 3 spacious and individually designed suites.

During our stay there was only one other young couple, Alex & Sabrina, also from Germany, with us at the lodge. The four of us had the entire lodge to ourselves so to speak. What luxury!

moniquedecaro-makumu-5587

Team

As exceptional as the lodge is, so is the team! The lodge is run by the warm-hearted managers and couple, Chris and Janet.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5841

Janet takes good care of the guests and tries to fulfil their every wish. Ranger Chris and tracker Phillip took us on adventurous safaris in the morning and evening. Then there is Nelly´s, the ingenious chef who spoiled us 3 times a day with delicious food. The rest of the team took care of us in an unobtrusive and friendly way.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5853

Luxury Bush Lodge

The interior of the main building and the 3 suites is luxurious, stylish and individualistic. There was a really good designer at work here! Everything is very lovingly designed and decorated with beautiful colors and the finest materials down to the even smallest detail.

On the ground floor of the beautifully landscaped residential area you will find the kitchen and the dining and lounge area with surrounding terrace. Everything is open-plan to ensure that you have a great view from everywhere into the wilderness of the Kruger Park and the waterhole close by.

moniquedecaro-makumu-south-africa

Makumu means endless view in the Zulu language.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5254

moniquedecaro-makumu-4949

moniquedecaro-makumu-4954

A substantial breakfast is served at the community table after the morning safari.

moniquedecaro-makumu-4956

One should also not miss out on going to the upper floor. In addition to the books, binoculars, fitness equipment and a football table, you will also find a cozy fireplace.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5532

You can just sit with a delicious glass of Amarula in hand and watch the wild animals go by.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5228

The Boma, the observation deck with its open fire, is the romantic place where dining in the evening takes place and cozy hours are spent.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5598

Suites

The Zulu, Ndebele and Bushman Suites are inspired by these South African tribes. Every single detail has been lovingly and carefully selected. Each suite has a room with a double bed, a room with 2 single beds, 2 bathrooms, a wooden deck with a hammock and an outdoor shower. All the suites are accessible via wooden walkways.

May the simplicity of the Bushman calm you, the energy of the Zulu inspire you and the creativity of the Ndebele enthuse you…

To complete the bush experience, there is also no electricity, but only candlelight in the suites. When we returned from dinner to our suite, all the candles were already lit for us.

Zulu Suite

The Zulu Suite, decorated with spears and shields, reflects the spirit of the Zulu warriors – bold, aggressive and fearless. It is situated right at the pool and has the best view of the waterhole.

Sunrise Game Drive

Getting up in the morning at 5:30. Getting dressed and ready with the flashlight as your only light source. Then drinking a quick coffee on the terrace and off you go on a sunrise safari by 6:00.

moniquedecaro-makumu-game-lodge-

The Big Five and all the other animals are at their most active in the morning and evening. With a bit of luck, you also get to see the Big Five. We were very lucky to see lions, elephants, hippos, buffalo, leopard, rhino, impala, kudu, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck and wildebeest on our six safaris.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5793

After about two and a half hours, Chris served us our first breakfast consisting of biscuits and freshly brewed coffee right there in the bush.

Leopard tracks

Actually, already on the way back, Philip discovered a fresh blood stain and intestines in the middle of the road.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5802

Chris and Philip first thought that hyenas have probably stolen the hunter’s prey. But then Philip discovered drag marks, we followed them and found the dead Impala under a Marula tree. The prey of a leopard!

moniquedecaro-makumu-5121

Unfortunately, we did not find the leopard then, but we would be back

moniquedecaro-makumu-5148

Breakfast

Back at the lodge, it was time for our second breakfast. We were spoiled with all sorts of delicious fruit, pancakes, scrambled eggs, cereals and jams. Chef Nelly´s prepares anything you could wish for.

Pool

After the morning safari, it is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the view from.

moniquedecaro-makumu-4938

If you are lucky, a few elephants might even come to the watering hole or even to the pool to quench their thirsts.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5276

moniquedecaro-south-africa-makumu

The water hole near the lodge is very popular with the animals in the dry season.

moniquedecaro-makumu-0694

Lunch

Makumu is all inclusive! Delicious meals are prepared morning, noon and night and you can help yourself from the fridge or wine cabinet to whatever else you may feel like eating or drinking. Amazing!

moniquedecaro-makumu-5304

Sunset Game Drive

We went back on safari at 16:00. Until sundowners in the bush, we again had time to discover many wild animals.

Looking for leopards and elephants

We still have not ticked off leopards, elephants and buffalo on our list. We already followed elephant tracks on several safaris, but still have not seen them. But this is wild nature. Sometimes you are lucky, and sometimes not. And of course, we wanted to find the leopard with his prey and Alex still wanted to see buffalo.

The next morning we drove back to the Marula tree. On our way there, we even saw another leopard, very relaxed on a rock basking in the sun.

“Our” leopard was there once again. We could hardly believe our luck. Iit is extremely rare and very special to see a leopard in the wild.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5478

moniquedecaro-makumu-0641

We found them!

That afternoon on safari we finally found them – the elephants.

moniquedecaro-makumu-0776

Unfortunately, the elephants did not find it as great to see us, as we found it to see them. Absolutely not. A trumpeting teenage elephant came charging towards us. With shaking heads and big ears the other elephants immediately followed suit. It was serious.  Fortunately, Chris put his foot down, but the elephants chased us at neck breaking speed – that was enough to make us feel very nervous. Best to decide for yourself and watch the video. We definitely had pulse rates of 200 and will never forget the elephants chasing us. Spectacular!

moniquedecaro-makumu-0793

As soon as we have put some distance between us and them, they calmed down again. They just wanted to chase us away. For us, this was of course, pure adventure. And Philip, was as always, calm personified!

This time round at sundowners in the bush, none of us wanted a glass of wine, we were in need of something a bit stronger – gin and tonic!

Dinner

After our adrenaline rush we returned to the lodge very happy and looking forward to a delicious dinner around the open fire.

moniquedecaro-makumu-south-africa

Before dinner we met for a nice glass of wine, listening to the interesting stories of Chris and Janet and reminiscing about our exciting day.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5716

Even more leopards!

Well, somehow lady luck really was on our side. For that evening, just before dessert, we suddenly heard strange sounds close to the boma. It sounded like an animal was being killed. Janet, however, said that it was mating sounds. So we all took our lamps and illuminated the surrounding area – and there they were – two more leopards! Janet woke Chris and off we went again. Not even Chris, in his 25 years as a ranger, has observed leopards mating before.  And so we found ourselves, just quickly wrapped in blankets, in the bush once again.  And we found them, but all of a sudden, there were three leopards, two of them busy mating. Strangely, they did not feel disturbed at all. We were able to watch them the whole time, until they disappeared into the woods. Apparently leopards mate very often, only very briefly, but then, for most of the night.  So, I guess there will soon be small leopard babies.  Later we sat around the fire again. And they were still there, the mating sounds. Slowly it was time to go to bed.

moniquedecaro_makumu.png

The next morning, Chris even found Alex some buffalo before taking them to the airport.

moniquedecaro-makumu-5861

Conclusion

We will always remember this unforgettable time! We really experienced everything while our stay at Makumu. From fascinating adventures to sheer romantic moments. Whether seeing 5 different leopards in one day and being chased by elephants or spending an evening at the lodge in a sea of candlelight. So many experiences, so many emotions. And the certainty: We’ll be back!

We have seldom felt so at home – this was the absolute highlight of our South Africa trip! A piece of our hearts will forever remain in Makumu.

Sea Star Lodge & Sea Star Cliff, De Kelders, South Africa – magical ocean views

Rugged landscapes, amazing views, gourmet food, whale watching or even swimming with sharks

moniquedecaro-south-africa-sea-star-lodge

After our visit to the Cape Winelands we reached the small village of De Kelders, 160 km southeast of Cape Town. This small village is quietly situated between Stanford and Gansbaai and right on the coast. Here you can escape hectic city life and just enjoy the tranquillity.

The coast between De Kelders and Hermanus is a whale watcher’s paradise. Here you will find up to 80 Southern Right Whales (15-20m long) giving birth in the bay from June to early December with the best whale watching time being in October and November. Both these towns have received Best Whale Watching Site awards from UNESCO.

Anyone that is seeking adventure and would like to dive with white sharks, is exactly in the right place when in Gansbaai. The waters around Dyer Island, about 12 km off the coast, are swarming with white sharks (8m long) like hardly any other place on earth, due to a large seal colony. Shark cage diving is just not our thing!

moniquedecaro_sea-star-lodge-032

This small town is simply perfect to just go for a walk or hike, relax and unwind. You can walk for hours along the ocean and let your eyes wander over the splendid landscape. It is very safe here and nothing is fenced in.

Sea Star Lodge

The chic Sea Star Lodge, formerly a private home, is the first of 3 hotels in the Sea Star Collection by German emigrant and owner Ardi Hasenohrl. Sea Star Rocks in Cape Town and Sea Star Cliff, about a kilometre down the road, is also part of the Sea Star Collection.

moniquedecaro_sea-star-lodge-047

This cozy 5-star Guest House or B & B, is located directly on the coast of Walker Bay. You have stunning views of the Atlantic coast from everywhere. When the fog floats over the ocean in the morning, it is absolutely beautiful!

moniquedecaro_sea-star-lodge-069

Manager Clarissa took great care of us. She always spoiled us with a delicious glass of wine and some nice conversation and gave us tips for trips and dinner.

On the upper floor you will find the lounge with a sofa, fireplace, bookshelves, breakfast table and the kitchen. You simply feel right at home. On a lower floor level there is a small pool and a sauna.

Interview with the owner Ardi Hasenohrl

We spoke with Ardi, the very nice owner of the 3 houses in the Sea Star Collection. You quite simply feel just how much he loves this country and his 3 hotels.

Sea Star Cliff

This luxurious and stylish lodge provides guesthouse accommodation and is situated almost right on the cliffs and offers stunning views of the Atlantic coast. It was opened by Ardi Hasenohrl as the 2nd hotel in the Sea Star Collection. In the tastefully decorated, very modern rooms you can sleep under the stars and enjoy the spectacular panoramic view from your bed or the bathtub.

Some days cooking is also done in the Sea Star Cliff – personally by the managers Elzette and Jean! Both are chefs and also cook in the restaurant Springfontein.

Sea Star Lodge guests can also come and eat here. We enjoyed a very delicious 4-course meal with matching wines and that for only 37 EUR per person!

Honeymoon & Marriage proposals

De Kelders is a very romantic place and the Sea Star Guest Houses provide everything so that you can spend beautiful and romantic moments here as a couple. Owner Ardi always tries to offer his guests something very special. There are many unusual locations for marriage proposals here. As such Ardi for example, once organized a helicopter tour for a German couple. When they flew over the beach, there was a huge heart drawn in the sand by his staff. The “groom-to-be” took the ring out of his pocket and asked his sweetheart to marry him. Everyone was of course, very happy!

For honeymooners, there is also 10% discount, a bottle of sparkling wine and rose petals in the room and bathtub. Romantic picnics on the beach, special spa massages, candlelight dinners etc. are also available on request.

Tips for Trips

Walker Bay Nature Reserve
The perfect place to soak up the sea breeze and go hiking. Tip: As a guest staying at one of the Sea Star hotels, admission is free. Just mention it at the barrier.

Horse Riding mit Bertie
We took a beautiful ride on the beach with Bertie, but you can also go riding in the mountains. Riding from 18 EUR per hour. Bookings for beginners and advanced riders can be made telephonically at 079 1958463.

Masakhane Township Tour with Vuyi
Our tip to get to know the lives of the locals better. Vuyi, one of the staff members at Sea Star Lodge, took us into her township and showed us where she lives. We tried home-brewed beer and the trip gave us a lot of insight. Unemployment is widespread here. Mostly the people here are from the poorer Eastern Cape and the rest of the family still resides there. We learned about the fates of many parents that see their children very seldom. They can often only find work in faraway places and then send money home for their children’s education. The standard of living is constantly being improved by the government, but it is still a completely different life all together.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-2868

A new preschool is currently being built in the township. Thanks to a sponsor, a part of the preschool children’s meals is also covered.

African Seabird and Penguin Sanctuary
Founded in 2006, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, tries to protect and preserve the fragile marine ecosystem. An important part of their work and research is the protection of the breeding and calving grounds of the Southern Right Whale as well as the protection of endangered species such as the African Penguin and the Great White Shark. Injured and sick birds and penguins are nursed back to health in the sanctuary and then released back into the wild.

Conclusion

moniquedecaro_sea-star-lodge-056

We felt right home in this wonderful guest house. Everything is very personal and the all-round service comes from the heart. It feels more like you are visiting friends, than staying at a hotel. Thanks to the guesthouse ambiance you also quickly get to know the other guests. And then the view really is priceless – and all at a great price! No wonder that there are so many regulars here. We will definitely come again – then of course, at the right time to also do some whale watching.

Rosendal Winery & Wellness Retreat, Robertson, South Africa – Award-winning Wines, Spa & Gourmet Kitchen + Excursion Tips and an Interview with the Owner Shinniva (+ video)

Relaxation and indulgence in the Cape Winelands

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1728-rosendal

The next stop on our road trip through South Africa was at Rosendal Winery & Wellness Retreat. After some nice and exciting days in Cape Town and Paarl, we were already looking forward to some relaxing massages.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1539-rosendal

This luxurious 4-star guest house in the Cape Dutch style, is located secluded and idyllic on a large pond, in the small village of Geduld, near Robertson. It can be reached via Route 62 in less than 2 hours from Cape Town.

The wine farm, built in 1805, has new owners now for about 5 months. A young couple from Norway has fulfilled their dream and bought this small luxury retreat. We got together with the charming and friendly owner, Shinniva Skjerven Holmelid. Apart from a few impressions of the hotel, you also get to meet Shinniva briefly in the video.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1739-rosendal

After we had been welcomed by Tina and while we waited for our room, we enjoyed ourselves at the pool. And what do you do in the Winelands – drink wine, of course! The welcome drink – a great white wine.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1305-rosendal

The whole atmosphere in the guest house, the beautiful surroundings and even just the views of the vineyards and mountains alone, is relaxation pure.

After a leisurely walk around the pond, you reach a small sundeck where you can listen to the chirping of the birds.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1759-rosendal

Rooms

The romantic guest house has 8 cozy rooms. Five of the bedrooms, the Spa Suites, are located in the main house and have great views of the infinity pool. Three rooms are located in the farm house with beautiful views of the vineyards.

DCIM100GOPROGOPR1789.

The rooms are furnished with beautiful furniture and accessories in the colonial style. There are plenty of candles for romantic moments and for the colder nights the beds even have heating pads.

DCIM100GOPROGOPR1802.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1408-rosendal

We stayed in one of the beautiful Spa Suites overlooking the pool. All the rooms have terraces with comfortable beach chairs, a romantic bathroom with freestanding bathtub, silk curtains and a separate shower.

DCIM100GOPROGOPR1834.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1343-rosendal

Even from your bed you have a great view of the pool and the vineyards.

DCIM100GOPROGOPR1846.

Restaurant

The cozy restaurant with typical South African cuisine is very popular with the locals as well as guests from abroad. The gifted chef, Sipho Sibanda, who especially came to Rosendal from Johannesburg, works his magic by making the finest and most delicious gourmet meals on a daily basis – what a lucky find!

I have never before eaten such delicious and tender duck with such a tasty sauce! Unfortunately, the recipe is top secret.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1733-rosendal

Opening times: Breakfast 8:00 – 10:00 Lunch 12:00 – 13:30 Dinner 18:30 – 21:00. Booking is essential.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1730-rosendal

In sunny weather you can sit on the terrace, enjoying the beautiful view and the food. In the case of bad weather, it is very cozy inside.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1481-rosendal

Unfortunately, we experienced severe stormy and rainy weather while we were there, with the result that the entire guest house was affected by a power outage. This actually happens quite often in Africa. But thanks to the flexible chef and a gas cooker, we were still served a delicious 3-course dinner by candlelight with an open log fire that evening! True to the motto, every cloud has a silver lining, dinner was even more romantic than usual! Plenty additional candles were also placed in our room.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1488-rosendal

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1497-rosendal

Extract from the menu:
“Thai prawn salad with noodles, fresh mango, coriander and mint”
“Crisp confit duck leg, spinach and pancetta lentils and raspberry vinegar jus”
“Warm soft chocolate tart with raspberry sauce and vanilla pod crème fraiche”

In our opinion, the breakfast could be improved upon.  But it was supposed to be changed just a few days after our departure. So I guess it will now probably be very delicious! In any case, Sipho’s egg dishes were already delicious before!

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1655-rosendal
Part of the great team: The ingenious cook, Sipho and the kind, Tina.

Wine Tasting

South Africa is famous for its fine wines and of course you can also taste some of Rosendal’s own award-winning wines! From Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage Rosé, Merlot, Shiraz to Brut, you will find everything that your wine lover’s heart desires. We prefer white wine, but also found some of the red wines, such as the Shiraz, really delicious!

And the wines, with names like “HE SLEPT BENEATH THE STARS” and “HE STOLE MY HORSE” from Claus Voigt, do not only taste great, but also look really cool!

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1735-rosendal

Anyone that would like to, can also order the wine online.

Rosendal Spa

The Rosendal Spa with its great spa treatments, TheraVine care range and steam bath, is highly recommended! Upon arrival we immediately booked the Rosendal Face and Body Glow Experience (120 min for 47 EUR per person).

“Your experience start off with a full body exfoliation, then indulge in a facial cleanse, exfoliation and facial massage and end the treatment off with a relaxing and soothing 60min Aromatherapy massage”

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1622-rosendal

Both the therapists, Bianca and Flores, really do a great job. All the treatments were very pleasant and relaxing.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1462-rosendal

The next day we continued with the Signature African Wood Massage (90 min for 34 EUR per person).

The African Wood Massage is a deep relaxing and holistic massage recommended for individuals seeking complete relaxation of body, mind and soul. The treatment will end with the enchanting sound of the African Rain Stick.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-1610-rosendal

Anyone who would like to really spoil themselves, can book the Full Day Spa – Rosendal Deluxe Package with “Rosendal Face and Body Glow Experience, Hair Treatment, Manicure, Pedicure and Lunch” and be pampered from top to toe.

Our tip: Book the massages in advance. If you would like to receive a partner massage, it is also best to let them know in advance, because regular treatment rooms are only intended for one person. The spa will be enlarged soon. Then there will certainly also be massage rooms for couples.

Tips for Trips

Besides a boat ride with a picnic on the Breede River, climbing, hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, golf and parachuting, there are also more than 50 wine farms you can visit. According to Tina, Excelsior Wine Estate and Kranskop, are well worth a visit.

Olive Tasting – Marbrin Olive Farm

We highly recommend the Olive Tasting at Marbrin Farm! Clive and his wife, Briony extract award winning extra virgin olive oil of the highest quality (2013 SA Olive Awards and Top 20 Oils in South Africa) on this small family-run olive farm. It is all the more impressive, as they are self-taught. Amidst huge olive groves, very interesting stories and lots of information, different olive oils, balsamic vinegar, truffle oil and homemade olive tapenade can be tasted here.

moniquedecaro-south-africa-marbrin

The olive tree is surely the richest gift of heaven” – Thomas Jeffersen

And of course, olive oil can also be purchased directly. We took about 5L home with us. Sooo yummy!

Marbrin Olive Growers, Klaasvoogds East, Robertson, 6707, South Africa

More tips for trips can be found in the Africa Geographic6 things to do in the Robertson Wine Valley

Conclusion

We had a romantic and relaxing time. The great massages, the pool and the whole ambience was very relaxing! Here you can take things easy! With delicious wines and wonderful food, you can really spoil yourself.

It was also really great that Tina invited us to the village church one evening. There the whole village has lots of fun on Saturday nights, singing gospel songs and dancing together. We were immediately welcomed with warmth and hospitality and as such got more insight into the daily lives of the locals and staff.

For a stopover in the Cape Winelands, it is highly recommended! We stayed for 2 nights and that was definitely too short. There is just too much to see. The Robertson Wine Valley is such a nice place to relax and unwind, enjoy nature and get to know great people and their stories.

Our Tips for a Romantic Holiday in South Africa – Cape Town, Winelands, Garden Route & Kruger Park

A Gourmet & Adventure Road Trip in Pictures with hotel, restaurant, adventure and travel tips

Stunning sunsets, gourmet food at its finest, the best wines, beautiful scenery, incredible starry skies, romantic candlelight and fireplaces – to us, this is pure romance and Africa! We fell in love with Africa on our Namibia trip last year and could finally visit the continent again this year. This time we went on a gourmet tour to South Africa. And South Africa is an insanely amazing country!

You can find some of the world’s best restaurants and wineries here as well as beautiful luxury hotels and lodges. There are so many good and inexpensive restaurants (see tips below) that you are spoiled for choice. To get as a good a meal in Germany, you have to go a star-rated restaurant and will then easily pay three times as much.

The South African Rand is currently at a record low. Of course that is bad for the locals! For us, as travelers, that however also means, a luxury holiday at competitive prices. And with so much romance, this country is of course perfect for your   honeymoon or even a marriage proposal! Furthermore, South Africa is one of the most family-friendly and secure long haul destinations.

South Africa has beautiful beaches, rugged coastlines, deserts, endless dry savannahs, scrublands, rainforests, lagoons, wetlands, high plateaus, low and extremely high mountain ranges. As they say, the whole world in one country. And yes, this country in southern Africa is so incredibly diverse, that even after our trip, we still feel we have missed out on so much. One simply can experience and do so much here, that one holiday is hardly enough.

The climate on the Atlantic coast in the west is sometimes rough and not necessarily suitable for a beach holiday, as the water is just too cold. Nonetheless there are still a few hardy surfers and swimmers. To the east on the Indian Ocean the weather is mild with a Mediterranean climate and in the northeast it is tropical and hot.

The combination of modern big city life, European comfort and the originality of black continent Africa with its friendly people and unique flora and fauna is something really special.

If you want to enjoy the best gourmet food and delicious wines, exciting entertainment and great trips, the Western and Eastern Cape is the place to be! Those looking for wild Africa and even more romance, should definitely visit the Kruger Park. A combination of both, is of course, perfect!

We would like to give you some tips for your dream holiday or maybe even your honeymoon in South Africa. Apart from the hotels and restaurants where we were, we have even more tips from travelers we met along on the way!

21 days, 1120 km, 2 flights, 5 Hotels, 3 Lodges and 10 Safaris

We traveled to South Africa from mid-April to early May 2016. We experienced this time, it is autumn in South Africa, as very pleasant. Sure, there were a couple of rainy days, but otherwise the weather was nice and warm. It was also not that crowded in Cape Town. Where on usually waits three hours in line at Table Mountain during peak season, we simply walked through.

We started our trip in Camps Bay, Cape Town. From there we went to Paarl and Robertson, you should also not miss Franschhoek, in the Cape Winelands and then to De Kelders on the rough (whale) coast. After that, we drove to Plettenberg Bay and Port Elizabeth on the Garden Route. From Port Elizabeth we took a domestic flight to Hoedspruit and from there we went to the Kruger Park.

We visited beautiful hidden gems – great hotels, guest houses and lodges with lots of charm and that special something. And they all were unique in their own way.

Be inspired by our pictures and tips!

Cape Town/Camps Bay

Cape Town is definitely worth a visit or even better, several visits! We stayed 4 nights and feel that we have only seen a very small fraction of the city. In the absolute peak season, between Christmas and New Year, it is teeming with tourists. Even in the green season, from June to August, Cape Town is worth a visit. Then it is quiet, windless, mosquito and tourist free.

Exploring one of the most beautiful cities in the world, also called “Mother City”, stays with you forever. The view of the 1086 m high Table Mountain on one side and the amazing view of the ocean on the other, is impressive. The city is an exciting mix of Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, Florida and California.

Cape Winelands

South Africa is famous for its fine wines. The vineyards in the Western Cape belong to UNESCO and include the 6 wine regions Constantia, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Robertson and Wellington. You can enjoy great wine tastings, wine tours and tasty food is also served at the countless wineries. The beautiful landscape is best explored during the South African winter, since everything is wonderfully green then. However, it can also rain every now and then.

Palmiet Valley Wine Estate /Paarl
This 300-year-old wine farm is located in the Paarl Valley, between countless vineyards and the Drakenstein mountains, a mere 40 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. The historic manor in the Cape Dutch style has a swimming pool and 13 rooms in 6 categories, priced from 75 EUR per night. Every room has a romantic four-poster bed and a great bathroom. The stylish and peaceful estate is especially popular with bridal couples. Weddings can take place in the cellar, the small chapel or in the open air. Up to 80 people can celebrate at a wedding to their heart’s content. The gourmet breakfast and the 3-course dinner are a real treat. (Our report follows)

The restaurant has a really gifted chef who conjures up very delicious gourmet food in the cozy restaurant. The Spa is also highly recommended, for example, for a Signature African Wood Massage. De Kelders | Gansbaai | Hermanus

These three cities are located about 170 kilometers southeast of Cape Town on the Walker Bay coast. Those who would like to dive with white sharks, is exactly in the right place when in Gansbaai. The waters around Dyer Island, about 12 km off the coast, are swarming with white sharks (8 m) like hardly any other place on earth, due to a large seal colony.  Shark cage diving is just not our thing!

moniquedecaro-hermanus-2486

The coast between De Kelders and Hermanus is a whale watcher’s paradise from June to November every year, with the best time being in October and November. Then there are up to 80 Southern Right Whales (15-20 m) giving birth in the bay. Both towns have received Best Whale Watching Site awards from UNESCO.

Sea Star Lodge /De Kelders
This modern 5-star guest house is located in De Kelders on the coast of Walker Bay. You have a magnificent view of the Atlantic coast from the lounge and the 6 suites, priced from 91 EUR per night. We stayed in the Master Suite – which is almost as big as an apartment – and the Tree Top Room with a great bathroom and a terrace with uninterrupted ocean views! Manager Candice takes good care of the guests. Whoever feels like it, can go on a very interesting township tour with Vuyi, one of the staff members. Tip: If you stay here, you can occasionally go out for dinner to the private restaurant of interior designer Niel Stemmet or to the Sea Star Cliff. Very delicious! (Our report follows)

Garden Route

The Garden Route is a very popular and fertile region along the Indian Ocean and the N2. It is situated between Mossel Bay and Port Elizabeth. It is greener here than in the deserts landscapes to the north. There are numerous great beaches, beautiful lagoons, rugged cliffs, deep forests (Knysna), the Tsitsikamma National Park with the Storms River Mouth and many small, beautiful towns such as George, Wilderness and Oudtshoorn. For the more active, there is plenty to do: swimming, surfing, fishing, hiking, biking, golfing, canoeing, abseiling or bungee jumping.

Highlight: the large glass doors in our room and in the bathroom can open completely. The fireplace was also another highlight! You can enjoy a good meal in the cozy restaurant or go for a swim in the pool. The Villa and the new Country House with pool can comfortable accommodate large families or up to 3 couples travelling. For animal encounters, you can visit Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, the Elephant Sanctuary and the Knysna Elephant Park. With a little luck, you get to see wild animals on the game drives at 06:00 or at 16:00. The lodge is perfect for families, friends and couples. It is also very popular for marriage proposals. Kruger National Park

The absolute highlight of our trip – the famous Kruger National Park. It is the largest wildlife sanctuary and the most exciting safari destination in South Africa. In summer, from November to April, it is hot with higher rainfall, but warm and dry in winter. Game drives and encounters with African wildlife are spectacular and unforgettable!

Makumu Game Lodge /Kruger Park
This exceptional luxury lodge is located in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve (60,000 hectares) – one of the largest private reserves in the country and part of the Kruger National Park. It offers total privacy, all-inclusive luxury and nature in abundance. Even the furnishings of the main house and 3 suites, priced from 454 EUR per night, is luxurious and individualistic. The Zulu, Ndebele and Bushman Suites are inspired by these South African tribes. Every detail was selected with great care. To create the perfect bush feeling, there is no power in the suites, but only candlelight. If you are lucky, a few elephants might even pass by the pool. The warm-hearted manager couple, Chris (ranger) and Janet, the ingenious cook Nelly and the whole team will make your stay unforgettable. The food is top notch and the safaris are absolutely spectacular! With luck (we are in the bush after all) we encountered the Big Five and of course lots of other wild animals. (Our report follows)

Further information

Best time

Spring and autumn are recommended in particular. When it is winter in the northern hemisphere, it is summer in South Africa. Therefore Christmas and New Year are especially popular. During peak season, from November to February, Cape Town is very hot, windy, crowded, expensive and the roads are full. September and October are more ideal, the plants bloom, temperatures are bearable, it is the best time for whale watching, but it could be windy. Mid-January to mid-March is warm with lower rainfall. From the middle of May to early September it is cool with short, but heavy rain showers. There are also warmer days during this time period and the prices are lower.

Flights

You can fly nonstop with Condor from Frankfurt to Cape Town overnight in about 12 hours. Very comfortable! We can highly recommend the Premium Class. Obviously, it is more expensive, but so worthwhile! The 15 cm extra legroom are already really worth it – this way you will survive the night on the plane well. On top of that there is also a wellness set: extra-wide pillows, additional baggage allowance and a really good Premium menu! If you have the necessary small change, business class is of course, even more comfortable.

Pretty cool: Condor donates 0.60 EUR of each flight to the Reiner Meutsch Foundation FLY & HELP. Among others, a school to the value of 40,000 EUR has already been financed in Omuhonga, in the north of Namibia.

There is a great honeymoon special with South African Airways: 50% discount for the 2nd person, valid up until 6 months after the wedding date.

Rental Car

Just like in Namibia, we can again highly recommend Avis for South Africa. We arrived in De Kelders with a flat tire. And instead of just changing the tyre, they brought us a new car from Cape Town. And an even better one. This is what I call service!

We hope you have found a few cool tips here! Have a great trip!

Sea Star Rocks, Camps Bay, Cape Town, South Africa – Ocean views + Tips

The view & the design – spectacular!

moniquedecaro-sea-star-rocks-0559

After a winding trip up the hill in Camps Bay, you reach the stylish Hotel Sea Star Rocks at the foot of Table Mountain. This stylish boutique hotel with 3 suites was opened by German emigrant Ardi Hasenohrl last year and is the third hotel in the Sea Star Collection. This has been a dream come true for owner Ardi and he has done it very successfully!

moniquedecaro-sea-star-rocks-0647

As soon as you enter the front door, you are overwhelmed by the magnificent view on offer. The huge glass doors offer a wonderful panoramic view. You have uninterrupted views of the ocean,  Lion’s Head, Bakoven and Camps Bay beach.

moniquedecaro-sea-star-rocks-0581

DCIM100GOPROGOPR1637.

After the warm welcome from the young and very friendly manager Thekla and a welcome drink, you can let the hotel work its magic.

sea-star-rocks-moniquedecaro

The next eye catcher can then be found in the lounge – giant Tretchikoff prints on the walls and  bright yellow Roche Bobois chairs.

moniquedecaro-sea-star-rocks-0569

The artistic designs of the women’s portraits are also found on several cushions throughout the hotel.

We stayed in the Sea Star Rocks Suite. Here you have gigantic 180 degree views through the huge panoramic windows of the ocean and the bay.

moniquedecaro-sea-star-rocks-0591

The 60 square metre suite also features a large terrace, a Hansgrohe rainshower, a free standing bathtub, a minibar, a blu ray DVD player, a 60 “Full HD LED TV (that we never used) and a Nespresso coffee machine.

moniquedecaro-sea-star-rocks-0628

African elements and colors are mixed wonderfully here with modern and stylish elements.

moniquedecaro-sea-star-rocks-1001

The hotel does not serve dinner, but there are many great restaurants in Camps Bay.

moniquedecaro-sea-star-rocks-0811

The view down into the bay is simply stunning. Especially when fog rolls in over the ocean and then makes its way up to Table Mountain.

moniquedecaro-sea-star-rocks-0804

Tips for Trips

Those who feel like it, can climb Table Mountain or relax at the beach directly from the hotel. It is also worth while taking a trip to the wineries and the Cape of Good Hope.

Camps Bay Beach

moniquedecaro-sea-star-rocks-0743

This beach is ideal for enjoying the sunset. Many surfers and walkers (with their dogs) meet here.

Wine Tasting

After a 30 minute drive you reach the Constantia Winelands or after about an hour’s drive the Stellenbosch Winelands. Here one winery follows after the other. The famous Groot Constantia was a bit too touristy for our taste. We rather recommend the following wineries:

Eagle´s Nest, Constantia Main Rd, Constantia, Cape Town, 7806, South Africa
Telephone:+27 21 794 4095, Hours: 10AM – 4:30PM

Home

Telephone:+27 21 795 6100, Hours: 10AM – 5PM
www.constantiaglen.com

Cape Peninsula Route

On this 250 km route around the Cape Peninsula to the southernmost point of South Africa are Camps Bay, Constantia and Kirstenbosch, Hout Bay, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek, Muizenberg (surfing spot), Simon’s Town (penguins), Cape Point and for sunset, Chapman’s Peak Drive. You should allow a whole day for this trip or even two days. Time flies by in between delicious wine and cheese tastings when you visit the wineries and it is also difficult to tear yourself away from the cute penguins.

More information about different routes can be found on www.dein-suedafrika.de.

Table Mountain & More

With City Sightseeing’s Red Tour bus you can travel directly from the beach promenade in Camps Bay to Table Mountain’s cable car station. Very convenient and interesting! Of course there are many other tours and much more to discover. Tip: Buy and print the tickets in advance online. And with a 2-day ticket, a harbor boat trip is included.

Conclusion

The view from the hotel is truly spectacular! To have such a view, is real luxury! We totally enjoyed it! The whole design of the hotel is extremely stylish. And the atmosphere and ambience are ideal for relaxing. Should you have any questions, there is always someone around to answer them, otherwise you have peace and quiet. This hotel is quite simply perfect to relax and unwind in and as a base for great day trips.

Palmiet Valley Wine Estate, Paarl, South Africa – Romantic, Wine & Indulgence on a 300 Year Old Wine Farm

An oasis for a romantic getaway or even a fabulous wedding

moniquedecaro-palmiet-paarl

This small, 5-star country house hotel in the Cape Dutch style, is located in the heart of Klein Drakenstein, between countless vineyards and the Drakenstein Mountains. The history of the 32-hectare wine estate with vineyards, fruit and olive trees and a small stone chapel, dates back to the year 1754.

moniquedecaro-palmiet-south-africa

Still one of the best vineyards in the Winelands, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc are the grape varieties grown here.

moniquedecaro-palmiet-paarl

The vineyard surrounded wine estate is a mere 40 minute drive from Cape Town. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are 20 minutes and the beautiful beaches about 50 minutes away.

In contrast to the lively bustle of Cape Town here the atmosphere is one of complete tranquility. One somehow feels transported back in time to a bygone South African era in a wonderful way and can easily unwind here. Since it rained during our stay here, everything somehow seemed even cozier.

Hidden behind one of the chalets is a large swimming pool for the warmer months. We were told that in January, 48˚ Celsius is no exception here!

moniquedecaro-palmiet-paarl

Rooms

The luxurious wine estate has 13 historic rooms in 6 categories: Standard, Junior, Luxury, Presidential, Honeymoon and Cottage. All the rooms are equipped with beautiful antiques, oriental rugs, historical vaults, art works, romantic four-poster beds and attention to detail.

Honeymoon Suite

moniquedecaro-palmiet-paarl

We stayed in the beautiful and large honeymoon suite with a four-poster bed, lounge area, minibar and a great bathroom in the main house. From here there is a direct access to the lounge and dining room.

moniquedecaro-palmiet-paarl

moniquedecaro-palmiet-paarl

In our opinion, the bed was a little hard, but everyone experiences this differently anyway. If we had stayed longer, we would have gotten another room immediately upon request.

palmiet_moniquedecaro-1100

With a complimentary, delicious bottle of sherry and an interesting magazine, you can spend time here in a relaxed atmosphere.

palmiet_moniquedecaro-1146

These beautiful flowers are from the estate’s own garden.

palmiet_moniquedecaro-1049

Lounge

The lounge area above the dining room offers plenty of comfortable seating, reading material, interesting decoration and a fireplace.

Restaurant / Dining Room

The restaurant only serves guests staying at the hotel. With fresh ingredients, partly from the estate’s own garden and with South African gourmet cuisine, one can allow oneself to be spoilt here. The food was quite simply magnificent!

moniquedecaro-palmiet-paarl

moniquedecaro-palmiet-paarl

palmiet_moniquedecaro-1080

Before dinner is served, you are welcomed on the terrace with a delicious glass of wine.

palmiet_moniquedecaro-1226

Breakfast

Weather permitting, you can have breakfast outside on the terrace. Otherwise, the scrumptious breakfast with homemade jams, fresh juice and a huge selection of cereals, cold meats, cheese, salmon and olives, is served in the dining room. Freshly prepared egg dishes or pancakes are also available on request.

palmiet_moniquedecaro-1261

Weddings

Due to its romantic atmosphere Palmiet is one of the top venues for weddings and celebrations in the vicinity of Cape Town. Romantic weddings can take place in the rustic wine cellar that can seat up to 100 people, in the small chapel that can seat up to 30 people or on the lawn. The in-house wedding planner takes care of all the details.

Up to 80 people can stay overnight. If the rooms are not enough, some guests can also stay in the adjacent De Leeuwenhof Hotel which is within walking distance. And for the champagne reception, there is the roof terrace with fantastic views of the vineyards and mountains.

palmiet_moniquedecaro-1189

To celebrate a wedding on this extraordinary estate, must be extremely beautiful! If you would like to get married here, I will also gladly accompany you as your wedding photographer! To view some of my wedding photography, please click here.

palmiet_moniquedecaro-1179

For everyone seeking peace and quiet, enjoying delicious wines and gourmet food, or those that would like to experience their romantic dream wedding, this is the perfect place to be. Amidst the beautiful countryside, in the romantic and historic atmosphere, you can switch off, relax and unwind.

Sea Five Boutique Hotel, Cape Town – A luxurious beach house in Camps Bay & restaurant tips

Luxurious Beach Style – only 300 meters from the beach

The first stop on our South Africa trip led us to the idyllic and stylish Sea Five Boutique Hotel. This stunning beach house with only 7 suites is centrally located on a quiet hillside of Camps Bay – one of South Africa’s most famous beaches. It is impressively nestled between Table Mountain, the Twelve Apostles mountain range and the Atlantic coast.

When you enter the house, you feel right at home, almost like in your own beach house, rather than in a hotel. Due to the small number of rooms, you also quite often have the house all to yourself. And also very laid-back, room keys are simply left lying on a table in the lounge.

The blend of chic Mediterranean and South African style comes from the top designer Francois Du Plessis and the Italian hotel manager Marco Castoldi.

You can have breakfast in the elegant lounge or directly at the pool. Everything you could wish for is there. Fresh juice, fruit, cheese, meat, cereals and warm egg dishes.

The hotel itself does not offer dinner, but there are enough restaurants nearby. (See tips below)

If you feel like it, afternoon tea is served at 5 o’clock with homemade cakes and biscuits.

The cheerful staff always created a good atmosphere. By the way, Elvis Kaya from Malawi is also a great painter! Those who would like to, can also directly acquire some of his very beautiful paintings.

The heart of every hotel is its staff and manager. We had some time to chat with Marco Castoldi, the friendly manager of the hotel.

The beach promenade somehow reminded us of the Ocean Drive in Miami. Prestigious cars, tons of restaurants and many athletes.

moniquedecaro-5520-seychelles

With beautiful beaches, tropical nature, warm temperatures, a variety of islands, great food and lovely people we can highly recommend the Seychelles as a honeymoon destination! We love the Seychelles – it is a beautiful piece of paradise that you want to visit again and again!

The many islands (115) of the Seychelles are perfect for island hopping. It really would be such a shame to visit only one island! The classic island hopping trip is of course: Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. But there are also many other beautiful islands. And whoever thinks that there is only sun, beach and sea, is completely wrong. In addition to numerous water sports, there is so much more to discover and explore here in paradise.

Wedding on the Seychelles – Impressions & Tips for the most beautiful day of your life on the dream beach of La Digue

Impressions of Mira & Stefan’s Dream Wedding

We combined my wedding photography assignment with a short holiday and accompanied these two on the most beautiful day of their lives to the Seychelles. It was the absolute perfect day for the two of them! They got married at one of the most beautiful beaches in the world – at Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue.

Marcus is not a professional videographer, but he managed to capture all the emotions of this day in beautiful images (in my opinion).

Our Tips

It’s easy to get married in the Seychelles! You only need your passport, birth certificate (English translation) and your loved one. The wedding on the beach is then directly legally recognized in Germany. Back in Germany you only need to apply for a German marriage certificate and, if necessary, have your name changed. After the ceremony in the Seychelles, each of you retain your own names.

We recommend a wedding ceremony in the afternoon. Then you can get ready in a relaxed atmosphere at midday and still have some beautiful pictures taken at sunset after the ceremony. The booking of a special pavilion is advisable, as it enables you to get married at one of the more remote beach areas and it has that personal touch. As a bride you only really need high heel shoes for the pictures, if that is your thing, otherwise barefoot is perfect! Flip Flops for the groom are also more than adequate.

For Mira & Stefan and also with us 3 years ago, it worked to simply just take the wedding dress along as hand luggage in a garment bag. You are not really allowed to do it, but with brides, staff (almost) always turn a blind eye! After all, who would like to put her wedding dress in a suitcase?!

More tips can be found here.

For us Le Domaine de L’Orangeraie is the most beautiful hotel on La Digue and it provides the perfect setting for the preparations, the wedding day, the candlelight dinner in the evening and also for the honeymoon.

It already was our second time in this hotel that we love so much. Three years ago, we personally experienced our dream wedding on the Anse Source d’Argent beach.

Denis Private Island, Seychellen – moving pictures of a luxurious island hotel + Interview with Manager Beverley Daguisé

With the sustainable tourism concept, the stunning hotel and the great animal protection and nature conservation programs, the dedicated Mason family has created something truly out of the ordinary here.

Denis Island leaves its mark in your heart! We thoroughly enjoyed our time here! You can find our full review here.

Manager Beverley Daguisé tells us in a small interview a little bit about this beautiful island and the hotel:

1. When is the most beautiful time to visit Denis Private Island and your hotel?

Honestly, we are so fortunate in Seychelles that we experience lovely weather throughout the year and temperatures ranging from 28-31 year-round. There are no cyclones or winters, we simply have 2 monsoon seasons which bring some winds and slight change in the sea patterns. Some choose the September/October season as for the fisherman or divers, this is the best time to come.

2. I know that a lot of furniture were produced by yourself. But who has planned this beautiful interior design?

The decor throughout the hotel has been influenced largely by the Seychellois family whom own the island. The key features is to bring a touch of the island, rustic and raw to the cottages where our guests reside. It’s important that our guests feel comfortable in their island cottage and our style has remained unpretentious yet offering all the comfort one would require on this secluded island.

3. Do you have any special offers, honeymoon offers and wedding packages?

Wedding Package:

  • decorated wedding venue
  • one tier wedding cake
  • one bottle of champagne
  • registrar fees and a romantic candle-lit dinner on the beach (subject to weather conditions).
  • overnight accommodation in single room on full board basis, including Mahe- Denis-Mahe flights will be provided for the registrar having to overnight on the island.

Honeymoon Package:

  • A private starlight dinner (weather permitting)
  • “Sunset Moment” (One Sundowner cocktail with canapés per couple once during the stay)
  • “Romantic Experience” once during stay (Special turndown – set up of bed)
  • A Honeymooners “Indulgence Experience” (Decoration in the bath with candles, petals & essential Oils)

4. Do you have special tips for a trip to the Seychelles? What is absolutely worth visiting?

Seychelles is certainly one of the most amazing destinations in the word, its natural beauty is striking and we continue to capture hearts world round. A special tip would be to make sure that you island hop throughout the Seychelles. With an archipelago of 115 islands, and each island having its own uniqueness and diversity, one cannot come to the Seychelles and only see one island. At least 3 islands is a must. Between the granitic and coralline islands, there is such a difference, yet both of them equally beautiful. Getting up close and personal to the Giant Tortoises is a unique experience and highly recommended. If you come to Denis Private island, come and meet Toby who is sitting at 117 years old. They love having their neck scratched.

5. Every Saturday there is a wonderful Beach Barbecue in your lovely hotel. Which Special on what day should also not to be missed?

The beach Barbeque is certainly a favourite as you dine under the stars, with the ocean waves a short distance away, and feet in the sand….that’s what paradise is all about! Another highlight is our Wednesday evening Japanese buffet, the fish is freshly caught off the island and later that evening delivered for dinner. There is a buffet of sushi, sashimi or teppanyaki and guests often compliment how the freshness is outstanding.

6. Can you tell us a little bit about you bird conservation project and your own farm.

The owners of Denis Island aim to be an example of sustainable development by integrating ecotourism with production (self-sustainability) and conservation activities. The island has its own farm and vegetable gardens that account for a large proportion of the food supplies needed for the hotel and staff. Also, much of the furniture is made by the island carpenters who use timber that is sustainably harvested on the island.

But, number one on the island’s agenda is the conservation of the environment.  Most of the conservation work on Denis Island has been done in collaboration with a number of local NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations) and assisted by the Seychelles government. To build a long-term conservation strategy, Denis Island decided to rally with the Green Islands Foundation (GIF), a local NGO that helps private island owners with their conservation and sustainability work. Denis has a good potential for the development of a broad-leaved forest on the island, which is suitable to serve as a safe haven for many of the Seychelles endemic landbird species that are threatened with extinction.

Having removed potential predators and created a suitable habitat, the island was deemed to be ready for the introduction of the endangered endemic birds. In 2004, Seychelles Fodies  and Seychelles Warblers were introduced, followed by Seychelles Magpie Robins and Seychelles Paradise Flycatchers in 2008. The endemic birds have bred successfully with a doubling or even tripling of their populations as a result.

Beverley Daguisé
