Bambu Indah, Ubud, Bali – The Special Eco Boutique Hideaway by John Hardy

Luxury, Organic Cuisine & Sustainable Bamboo Design

Responsible lifestyle in harmony with nature, sustainable bamboo design combined with luxurious comfort and loving service – that is Bambu Indah (beautiful bamboo). This eco-chic hotel is extraordinary and also environmentally friendly. It is located in Sayan, on the edge of Ubud and close to the Ayung River shore. Since 2005 eleven restored Javanese bridal houses and two open Bamboo tree houses provide unique and individual overnight accommodation.

John Hardy (jewelry designer and co-founder of the extraordinary “Green School“) and his wife Cynthia founded Bambu Indah. Initially, it was the Hardy family’s private, but their guests were so thrilled after visiting it, that they decided to extend and remodel it into a hotel.

Organic Kebun (Organic vegetable and herb garden)

John’s son, Orin Hardy, designed and created the gardens at Bambu Indah. Traditional Balinese rice, organic vegetables, herbs and flowers are grown in the gardens on the estate and used daily in the kitchen.

Only natural fertilizers including compost made from the estate’s organic waste are used. Vegetables, coffee, tea, beer and wine are sourced from local producers.

Minang House

The Minang House, the Sumba House, the restaurant’s kitchen, dining furniture and the new bamboo tree houses were all designed and built by John’s daughter, Elora Hardy, and her Ibuku team.

The unique Minang house does not have a single straight wall and is used for Morning yoga, private dinners and special events.

It was built in Sumatra in just 90 days by the Ibuku team out of black bamboo based on the model of a large clan house (Minangkabau rumah gadang). Each curve of the roof has the exact symmetry of a rising full moon.

Kolam (Swimming Pond)
This sustainable pool was constructed without any cement.  Instead, it was built using recyclable polyethylene, lava stones and a vegetation regeneration zone, which naturally cleanses, filters and oxygenates the water and nurtures beneficial bacteria.  To protect the impact on the environment, no chlorine or algicides are used. A deep pool cleaning takes place once a month at full moon to rid the pool of any algae. (You can find the scheduled pool cleaning days here.)

Bamboo observation deck
You can climb this chic tree house if you wish to go up higher or if you are just seeking some peace and quiet.

Africa Deck
From this deck, you have a fantastic view of the surrounding landscape. It is also the ideal spot to watch the sunset in a cozy beach chair while enjoying a drink from the small bar.

The Bamboo elevator is extraordinary! It takes you through the mountain to a lower level close to the river, where the tree houses and the other pools are located.

Crossing the bamboo suspension bridge and following a narrow path along the river we reached our treehouse – the Copper House.

Bamboo Tree Houses (Back-to-Nature)

Copper House (and Moon House)

A long stone staircase brings you to this tree house in the heart of the rain forest. Just entering it is already such a special experience. The view is simply stunning!

The Copper House and the Moon House (which is a bit lower behind the spring water pools), are built entirely from bamboo. Bamboo is strong, flexible and extremely environmentally friendly.

The tree houses have hand-hammered copper bathtubs, walk-in showers, special beds with built-in air conditioning, minibar and comfortable seating areas.

The views from your bed and the bathroom are overwhelmingly beautiful. The design is unique and truly exceptional. To have the privilege to stay in a semi-open tree house and fall asleep with the sounds of nature is a dream come true! The design is also from Elora Hardy and her Ibuku team.

At night the mosquito net is closed. The air conditioning is in the bamboo tubes above the bed. You only see the small air holes.

“If the view from your window feels a bit less spectacular than the one you had at Bambu Indah, I sincerely apologize.” -Diane, Manager

The bathtub is extraordinary: it has holes at the bottom that fills and empties it again.

Javanese Teak Houses

Every home at Bambu Indah is unique. The Javanese teak wood houses were traditional homes built by Indonesians over 100 years ago. Originally, they served as bridal houses to the Javanese noblemen. They were handpicked by John Hardy before being carefully dismantled, relocated to Bambu Indah and lovingly restored. One even has a glass floor (Udang House).

Spring water pools at the river

The natural spring water pools down at the river offer various areas to swim and relax.

There is even a small restaurant for drinks and snacks.

Restaurant Dapoer

The Dapoer restaurant serves traditional Indonesian dishes and homemade bread, cereals, jams, teas and desserts. All served with fresh and sustainable ingredients from Bambu Indah’s gardens.

Bambu Indah strives to produce all vegetables and herbs on-site, but some products are bought from local farmers and producers. Local products mean less time in transit and fresher, more nutrient-rich food. Products purchased locally also support the local economy.

For breakfast you are spoilt for choice, for example, there are homemade Bubur Bali (Balinese porridge), cereals, homemade breads, jams, egg dishes and fresh seasonal fruit.

Romantic dinners
There are countless options when it comes to romantic dinners. Whether in the traditional Bale Kuno, on the deck of your treehouse, on the A frica deck or with lots of candles and fire down by the river – Bambu Indah is the perfect place for any special occasion. (Special Dinner – Menu)

The loving decoration of our table was incredible!

“We know what it’s like to do amazing things.”

Our menu: Summer rolls, Garden fries (fried vegetables), Beef rendang, Tofu sisit, Dadar gulung (green pancakes) and Chocolate coconut balls.

Honeymoon & Weddings

The ambiance at Bambu Indah is one of calm and romance. From intimate and private couple only ceremonies to memorable 200-guest weddings, anything is possible. You can find more information on weddings here:  Bambu Indah Weddings.

Romantic firelight dinner on the river

Spa

Unfortunately, we imagined our In-Balance Duo Massage with two therapists, differently. We did not find the massage very relaxing and are therefore unable to recommend it unconditionally.

Ibuku by Elora Hardy

John Hardy established the Green School in 2006. His daughter, Elora Hardy, inspired by the highly qualified local craftsmen, founded her own design company, Ibuku in 2010. This group of like-minded designers and architects would like Bali to become a global center for sustainable design. The Green Village also by Elora, offers sustainable living in exceptional bamboo villas.

On a guided tour you can visit the Green School, the Green Village and the Bamboo Factory. Very interesting!

Conclusion

Bambu Indah has extraordinary romantic flair. The environmental awareness and sustainable design concept are exemplary and impressive! Their attention to detail is seen and felt everywhere. The Tree houses are spectacular and the Teak houses, the restaurant and the pools are exceptional. Preferably one would like to stay in a different house every night. Guests are not treated as guests, but as friends. We found it magnificent and would like to visit Bambu Indah again!

Green Village, Bali – spectacular & sustainable Bamboo villas by Ibuku-Team

Sustainability & innovation inspired by nature

The Green Village in Bali close to the Ayung River offers sustainable and comfortable lifestyle to nature lovers, entrepreneurs and celebrities from all over the world.

Ibuku by Elora Hardy

Elora Hardy, daughter of the Canadian jewelry designer and visionary John Hardy, grew up in Bali and learned to appreciate and love the exceptional (artistic) skills of the Balinese craftsmen. She founded her own design company Ibuku in 2010. With this amalgamation of craftsmen, architects, engineers and designers, she would like Bali to become a global center for sustainable design.

The Green Village was created in collaboration with her father, who also founded the Green School in 2006. Today it offers sustainable living in twelve unique and exceptional bamboo villas.

For the construction of the bamboo villas, no plans were drawn, but instead, they made models from bamboo. You can even learn how to build the models and bamboo houses in workshops that they host (Model Making Class + Bamboo Construction Workshop).

Bamboo is one of the world’s most sustainable and versatile building materials with a steel-like tensile strength. After only three to five years of growth, it is ready to be used.

In Ibuku’s bamboo factory, Balinese and Javanese bamboo are prepared for construction by undergoing months of special preserving processes. A house built from bamboo can last a lifetime.

You can buy or rent these gigantic and beautifully designed bamboo houses.  Who would not like to live in such close proximity to nature? For us, it would certainly be a dream come true.

The furniture and the complete interior are handcrafted from local, natural materials.

The villas offer unique design, comfort, a lifestyle amidst beautiful vegetation and with the open design, a lot of daylight and at the same time, many refined design elements.

The Green School, Green Village and Bamboo Factory can be visited on a guided tour. Extremely interesting!

An overnight stay at the unique eco-boutique hotel, Bambu Indah, by John Hardy, is definitely not to be missed.  Elora Hardy also designed the new bamboo tree houses.

You can also book these extra-ordinary villas at Airbnb.

Green School, Bali – the innovative school made from bamboo by John Hardy (+ video)

450 students, 33 nationalities & 50 bamboo houses

John Hardy realized his vision by building the future-orientated Green School in Bali. It is impressive, not only the architecture, but also the concept behind it, is remarkable! Everyone would like to be a child again at Green School!

The “green” school is a non-profit, private and international school with a future-orientated concept, built sustainably from bamboo. Sustainability, conservation, education, community support and promoting the children’s individual talents, are the foremost priorities.

John Hardy, the Canadian jewelry designer, conservationist and visionary, first came to Bali in 1975 and together with the talented Balinese craftsmen he produced his famous jewelry.  Here, he also met his future wife, Cynthia.  Together they founded Green School in 2006.

When the time came for his children to go to school, there was no suitable school in the area, so he decided to build his own. Green School opened in 2008 with 90 students. Today there are 450 students from all over the world. Among them, there are also more than 30 Balinese students, that qualified for scholarships.

“I wanted to stay in Bali,” John Hardy told me, “and I didn’t have anywhere to send the kids.” -John Hardy

With the construction of the school, he also wanted to show people how to build sustainably with bamboo and at the same time motivate the local communities to live sustainably. Bamboo grows quickly and by using it as a building material, the exploitation of the rainforests can be reduced.

Green School Tour

There is so much to tell about Green School! But it is best is, to have a look for yourself on a Green School Tour! (Admission fee USD 14)

“You have to visit Green School Bali to truly experience the uniqueness of such an inspiring, educational and architectural vision come to life”

The water in Green School comes from the Ayung River and is cleaned in a water treatment plant. The people from the local community can also fetch water from here free of charge.

The pathways at Green School are more than just somewhat uneven, even though there are so many children running around, but there is a good reason behind that too!

“You have to be mindful, where you’re going” – John Hardy

Every day 500 students enjoy a fresh and healthy lunch. Almost 60% of the ingredients are cultivated in the Green School’s gardens. They grow the following: Rice (Nasi), Tomatoes (Tomat), Beans (Buncis), Sweet Potatoes (Ubi), Cucumbers (Timun), Potatoes (Kentang), Spinach (Bayam), Manioc (Singkong), Eggplant (Terong), Cabbage (kol), Jackfruit (Nangka) and pumpkin (Labu).

They get fresh eggs from their own chickens. The kids also learn entrepreneurial skills. They buy chickens with their savings, feed them and then sell the eggs at the local market.

The children are encouraged to be more curious, dedicated and passionate about the environment and in the fight to help save our planet.

To teach the community how to recycle, they are prompted to bring their garbage to the school. For 5 kg of garbage per month, their children can then attend free English lessons!

There is also plenty of fun. The mud pit is very popular with the children. “Mepantigan” is a form of Balinese martial arts. It also draws upon Balinese drama, fusing fighting with the performing arts.

Tanja, a former student at Green School, was our tour guide.

You can find many more interesting facts in the Green School Heartbook.

A community of learners making our world sustainable

There is a maximum of 17 students in a class with three teachers.

The students even have their own pool in the river!

The Cathedral is the most significant building on the school grounds and was built within six months. Anyone who donates more than $ 100 to the school, can even have their names inscribed in one of the bamboo canes.

Kayumanis Ubud Private Villa & Spa, Bali – a tropical luxury hideaway

… where life is a private celebration!

Lush, tropical greenery, luxurious pool villas, loving people and plenty of romance – Kayumanis Ubud is the perfect place to relax, enjoy and celebrate special romantic events.

We started our tour of Bali at the Kayumanis Sanur and spent the last days of our trip at the Kayumanis Ubud – another beautiful boutique hotel that is part of the local Kayumanis Group.

The area in and around Ubud, the mystical center of Bali, is magnificently green. You are surrounded by beautiful Frangipani and Cinnamon trees, colorful flowers and many other tropical plants. It is precisely the same scene that greets you at the green Kayumanis oasis. Kayumanis Ubud has 23 pool villas catering for couples and honeymooners especially (only children over the age of 12 are allowed).

Kayumanis Ubud is located in the Sayan Village on the outer edge of enchanting Ubud, in the heart of a tropical forest and overlooking the Ayung River.

The design of this boutique hotel is based on that of a typical Balinese village. It is very spacious, has typical Balinese doors, (volcanic) rocks, tropical plants and many romantic lanterns. The hotel has a unique and romantic atmosphere.

Deluxe Villa “Meranti”

Upon entering the villa, it is customary to wash each other’s hands three times with the blossom water from the trough, in order to immediately leave any negative energy outside.

We stayed in the beautiful Villa Meranti. It is 350 square meters in size and the design is dedicated to the culture of the neighboring island of Java.

We were overwhelmed by our villa! We had a whole house with garden and pool all to ourselves – pure luxury!

The large pool sheltered by a roof of leaves, beautiful flowers, the spacious and tasteful outdoor living area with outdoor kitchen, romantic bedroom and chic open bathroom with an outdoor shower – simply beautiful!

In this villa you feel as if you are in a great tropical garden – it invites you to enjoy nature and relax!

Great inclusive services at the Kayumanis Ubud:

  • Begrüßungsgetränk und kühles Handtuch bei der Ankunft
  • Great inclusive services at the Kayumanis Ubud:
  • Welcome drink and cool towel on arrival
  • 30-minute back and shoulder massage
  • Daily breakfast in the Dining Corner Restaurant or in the seclusion of your villa
  • Minibar replenished daily with soft drinks, beer, mineral water and homemade cookies
  • Daily complimentary high tea from 2.30 pm – 5.30 pm either in your villa or in the restaurant
  • Fresh fruit basket daily
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Shuttle service within Ubud
  • Free transfer to and from the airport
  • 24-hour Butler service

The large pool has been designed beautifully and is surrounded by lush vegetation. It is a green haven.

Of course, there are also walls for privacy, but even these are overgrown with greenery and blend into the surroundings perfectly.

The modern, yet traditional Balinese style with cozy furniture, warm, natural colors and great batik patterns are comfortable and very tasteful.

Afternoon tea

Delicious afternoon tea is served, either in your own villa or at the restaurant daily from 14:30 to 17:30. Different treats are offered every day, from sweet to savory. It’s definitely not to be missed.

The bedroom is styled in warm shades of brown and has a romantic four poster bed and a writing desk in front the window. It has a feel-good atmosphere.

We love open bathrooms! And this bathroom with its rustic outdoor shower, freestanding bath and great skin care products is pretty amazing!

The villa is particularly romantic in the evening. Thanks to the tropical climate, it is still wonderfully warm at night, so you can really enjoy the outdoor living area and the pool.

Breakfast at the Villa

What a special luxurious indulgence it is to have breakfast in your own villa – whenever you feel like it!

Jungle-Pool

The huge infinity pool is reached after crossing a long bridge and walking along a picturesque path through the forest, past the charming spa.

It lies idyllically in the heart of the forest, overlooking the Ayung river and is surrounded by large Palm and Cinnamon trees.

Jungle-Spa

The treatments and rituals in the Kayumanis Spa seek to align body, mind and soul.

The beautiful Spa is located isolated on a hill and has five open double treatment pavilions on stilts.

The individual pavilions lie nestled in the beautiful, natural tropical scenery. The atmosphere itself is impressive and balm for the eyes and soul! And as soon as they start with the great massages, the body is also spoiled. Pure relaxation!

Kayumanis Massage
This signature treatment is exclusive to Kayumanis and involves a unique combination of Balinese massage, lomi lomi and therapeutic massage. It concentrates on the back of the body working from the toes up to the shoulders to improve flexibility, release soft tissue toxins and energy blockages and induce deep relaxation.

Spa Menu

The signature treatment begins with a soothing aroma footbath and continues with a relaxing head and body massage that combines shiatsu and acupressure techniques.

The massage was awesome and incredibly relaxing!

The therapists were so sweet and very professional! I had an injured foot and they lovingly took care of it. While I had my massage, they even made a cooling poultice and put it on my foot.

With freshly brewed Ginger tea and homemade biscuits, we found perfect relaxation!

Dining Corner Restaurant

The all-day dining restaurant has a private pool and impressive views of the forest and the river valley. Classic Thai and Modern Western Cuisine made with fresh ingredients are served.

Whether breakfast, lunch or dinner – the food was delicious!

In the evening floating candles and lanterns magically creates a very romantic atmosphere. Perfect for special occasions and romantic evenings in nature!

It is also very nice to dine in your villa, but with such great ambiance and the loving service, one should actually go to the restaurant!

Honeymoon & Wedding

It is quite simply the perfect place for your honeymoon! Whether a delicious honeymoon cake, a relaxing bath with rose petals, small gifts or the many different possibilities for a romantic dinner – it does not get more romantic than this!

And if you would like to get married here, there are many possibilities: On the river in the Kayumanis Ubud, on the beach in Kayumanis Nusa Dua or surrounded by palm trees in the Kayumanis Jimbaran – just magical!

You can get more info on weddings and wedding décor here: Weddings at Kayumanis

Excursion Tips

Ubud
Ubud is the cultural and the mystical center of Bali. It is strongly rooted in traditional Hindu customs.

A good starting point for a shopping tour is the Art Market, opposite the Ubud Palace. From here you can explore Main Road. We were there for hours and discovered only a small part of what can be seen. Our tip: A tour into Hanuman Street is definitely also worthwhile. Do give the small roadside spa’s a try. We treated ourselves to a (French) Pedicure for only 5 EUR. It was perfectly done for this unbelievable price!

There are many amazing boutiques which showcase incredible craftsmanship in Ubud. We were particularly intrigued by the FITA Art Shop with its handmade bags and jewelry.

Ubud has become more touristy in recent years, but it still has loads of charm! The hotels provide wonderful employment opportunities to the locals. People who previously just had to live from rice cultivation or traditional painting can now work in the hotels. The boutiques, local drivers and many of the restaurants obviously also benefit from tourism. The traffic in the narrow streets is indeed at times congested, so make sure to take this into consideration.

Bangkiang Sidem Trek
If you would like to see more of the area surrounding of Ubud, you can go hiking on the Bangkiang Sidem Trek. A driver from Kayumanis took us to the starting point and fetched us again at the endpoint, near the Main Road in Ubud, an hour later.

During the hike, we went past a typical Balinese home and were even allowed a look inside.

The houses are really big and very impressively built. Each house has its own temple, they cook on an open fire and several generations usually live together. At a wedding, it is nothing special to celebrate with 1000 guests.

Conclusion

The loving employees are the heart of Kayumanis. They make your holiday here a once in a lifetime experience. It was really amazing how they took care of us! They won our hearts completely and made our stay unforgettable!

Not only the staff, but the entire atmosphere, the great tropical pool villas, the yummy food, the award-winning spa and the tropical ambiance, left us raving about Bali! The Kayumanis Group did not only create something great for guests here, but also for the employees. They are encouraged and supported and for many, it is an amazing opportunity to further themselves. The warm smiles and hospitality are already in their blood. The Balinese really is great and kindhearted people! We miss our Kayumanis family!

Kayumanis Sanur Private Villa & Spa, Bali – Outdoor Living, Luxury & Wellness

Luxurious pool villas with wonderful service

Bali is a dreamlike island in the Indian ocean with fascinating culture, impressive scenery and wonderful people. We immediately lost our hearts to this beautiful tropical island!

We started our tour of Bali at the wonderful Kayumanis in Sanur. It is one of four beautiful boutique hotels in the local Kayumanis Group. We were picked up at the airport by the hotel’s private limousine and it took about half an hour until we reached Kayumanis Sanur, situated close to the beach.

The idyllic boutique hotel only has 11 villas – each with a private pool, butler service and many great extras.

After a warm welcome with fresh flowers and a refreshing drink, we entered a peaceful oasis! The architecture in the traditional Balinese style amidst tropical vegetation is very harmonious and radiates peace and tropical beauty.

“Where life is a private celebration.”

Pool Villas

Our personal Butler Adi took us to our villa, Jegogan. Each villa is named after a traditional Balinese musical instrument.

What makes Kayumanis so special, is its wonderful staff. Their smiles and loving attentiveness truly make your stay an unforgettable experience! The staff are mostly from the surrounding areas and encouraged and supported by Kayumanis.

Great inclusive services at the Kayumanis Sanur:

  • 15-Minute head, shoulder or foot massage
  • Daily breakfast in the Gong Restaurant or in the privacy of your villa
  • Daily traditional afternoon tea in the Gong Restaurant or in the privacy of your villa
  • Mini-bar filled daily with soft drinks and homemade biscuits
  • Fresh, tropical fruit basket daily
  • Transfer to and from Sanur and the beach
  • 24 Hour Butler service

The beautiful and spacious villas (from 400 square meters) each has one, two or three bedrooms, a private pool, a minibar, a chic outdoor living room with dining area and an outdoor kitchen.

“Space, Service & Privacy”

Our absolute favorite area was the outdoor living room with beautiful and stylish Balinese furniture. As it is always tropical warm in Bali, you can enjoy the outdoor area day and night. Simply brilliant!

The bedroom is romantic and tastefully decorated in natural neutral shades. The view from your bed overlooking the pool is especially beautiful.

The bathroom with its dark colors and stylish lighting radiates romance. Above the bath, there is a slight opening in the roof that enables you to hear the birds twittering whenever you take a bath or shower.

If, as in our case, your luggage should arrive late, there are even toothbrushes in the bathroom – it was my saving grace!

On the second floor there is a tasteful reading and study area decorated with a lot of attention to detail and some books, even some in German, attentively sought out just for us.

At Kayumanis you can have breakfast whenever you feel like it, there is no set time frame. And you have the choice of having breakfast in the restaurant or in the comfort of your own villa. It is especially romantic to have breakfast for two at your villa’s own private pool! To snack on in between meals, freshly baked biscuits (recipe included) are always available.

At breakfast, there is a huge selection to choose from. Whether you prefer a Continental, an American or a typical Kayumani breakfast with Cinnamon Toast, Balinese coffee or porridge – everything is really delicious!

Another highlight is the Afternoon tea. It is included in the price, as is the mini-bar filled with water and soft drinks.

Gong Restaurant

In the award-winning Gong Restaurant, under the direction of Chef Denny, the finest Balinese cuisine is served. Only fresh market ingredients and local herbs and spices are used.

Executive chef Denny is very talented and has worked himself up from being a simple cook to an award-winning head chef. He served us a very delicious 3-course Italian-Balinese fusion style meal.

The open restaurant, surrounded by tropical gardens, is a gourmet haven. With its many lanterns, it is extremely romantic in the evening.

Everything we tried was quite simply superb!

The tasty dishes, romantic atmosphere, stylish design with great colors and patterns and the exceptional staff, ensure that dining here is an extraordinary experience! Perfect for some romantic time!

(Our names in Indonesian)

The restaurant is also named after a Balinese musical instrument. Suitably, there are Balinese live music performances in the evening.

There is also a small boutique where you can buy some souvenirs and memorabilia.

Spa

In the beautifully designed spa, traditional Balinese healing and beauty treatments are offered. Since every guest is entitled to a free mini massage, everyone can experience relaxation pure. Really great!

Only natural ingredients, such as indigenous herbs, spices and plants are used.

After a soothing footbath, we indulged in a wonderful and relaxing massage. Highly recommended!

Sunrise Breakfast

If you like, you can even enjoy a sunrise breakfast on the beach. You have to get up early, but it is worth it!

Oka brought along everything we could wish for, even egg dishes!

Kayumanis Sanur has its own small beach with sunbeds and parasols. By car, it is a mere 10-minute drive.

Sanur

Thanks to the hotel’s private transfers, you can even go shopping in Sanur. Hardy’s Mall is well worth a visit when you are interested in buying clothes, beautiful wooden figures and all sorts of souvenirs at good prices. There are also many small boutiques with local precious things. For the return trip, you can arrange a meeting point beforehand with the hotel’s driver or you simply send him a pic of where you are and he then picks you up there. Wahoo!

Conclusion

Kayumanis Sanur is a wonderful place to relax and unwind. It is situated in a quiet, beautiful corner on the south coast of Bali. The loving staff, the delicious gourmet food and the large beautiful pool villas with their extraordinary outdoor living areas, in particular, make Kayumanis Sanur a truly unique and special place.  We felt so comfortable here.  Even the jet lag was not bad at all because we immediately were so relaxed! We found the many extras, personalized service and the endearing little details quite unique! Very romantic with loving attention paid down to the last detail!

MAIA Luxury Resort & Spa, Mahé, Seychelles – a luxury hideaway with style & heart

A paradise for honeymooners at Anse Louis

If you are looking for the perfect place to recharge your batteries, propose to your loved one, go on honeymoon or have your dream wedding on the beach, then the MAIA on a private peninsula in the Seychelles is just the place to be! The Seychelles itself is pure relaxation – but at the MAIA you enter a sanctuary of tranquility!

Rediscover dulled senses and restore yourself on a private peninsula!

A fantastic beach, lush tropical gardens, huge granite rocks; Cheerful staff who greets you by placing their hands on their chests; A dedicated butler who warmly welcomes you; Absolute privacy; The finest all-inclusive à la carte cuisine; Sweeping ocean views from your villa’s private infinity edged pool and a Balinese spa with open-air treatment rooms – these are just some of the highlights you will get to experience at this romantic “Leading Hotel of the World“!

MAIA Mythology – the luxurious five-star resort “MAIA” has been named after the oldest, most timid and most beautiful daughter of the Greek titan, Atlas and the Roman goddess of spring – here it symbolizes rejuvenation, beauty and discretion!

I see – the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, award-winning exotic gardens and magic tropical sunsets…
I hear – the chorus of tropical birdsong…
I smell  delicate jasmine, exotic spices and the ocean…
I feel  revived, relaxed and radiant…
I taste – a romantic dinner under the stars with only the Indian Ocean for company…
I sense  tranquility, serenity and complete happiness…

Special MAIA Experiences: Collection of Emotions

The exceptional design of the resort is inspired by Bangkok-based designer Bill Bensley. It is a blend of African and Asian influences, with thatched roofs, giant wooden doors, natural stone, precious wood and mosaic floors, warm wooden tones and creamy elements.

“The site was fantastic, and has the world’s oldest rocks, which are granite, and huge boulders. We placed wooden bungalows among the boulders, to make one feel as if it grows out of the earth. There was not one tree felled.” -Bill Bensley

On this island sanctuary, everyone can feel as if they are on honeymoon, because everything that is usually available to honeymooners only, is already included here. For example: Champagne on arrival, a romantic dinner on the beach or in the villa and a romantic bath in your private outdoor bath. For newlyweds on honeymoon another special treat is added – a 75 min massage in the beautiful MAIA Spa!

Next to the dreamlike turquoise Indian Ocean with its white sandy beach, there is a large pool with breath taking views of the ocean, a sun deck and sun beds. (Activities brochure >>)

Ultimate privacy in spectacular pool villas

The 30 private villas are beautifully integrated into the natural surroundings and all have their own private infinity pool, an outdoor pavilion with daybed and dining area, discreet butler service, Hermès toiletries, a custom-made minibar, an entertainment system and a great bathroom. They are about 250 square meters and are hidden between the granite rocks and surrounded by tropical vegetation.

Ocean Panoramic Villas

There are 13 Ocean Panoramic Villas situated on the top of the hill and they offer spectacular views of the ocean and the bay. We stayed in one of these great panoramic villas almost on top of the hill.

We were warmly greeted by our personal butler, Delfi.

Apart from us, only Delfi was allowed to enter our villa. If you would not like to be disturbed, you simply hang a coconut in front of the gate. We did not even need to do that, because Delfi was very discreet, yet always there when we needed him.

Delfi is from Jakarta in Indonesia and is a really witty and lovable guy. We had a lot of fun with him.

The design of the villas as well as the view of Anse Louis Bay is simply breath taking. Although the resort is 10 years old, everything looks brand new thanks to the clear and simple design as General Manager Lionel Ferrari explained to us.

The villa itself blew us off our feet! Simply breathtakingly beautiful! And the view – just WOW!

To welcome us, a bottle of champagne and all sorts of snacks were awaiting us.

Gracious. Spacious. Secluded. Sublime.

Great furniture, noble fabrics, superb floors and many warm light sources create an incredibly noble and warm ambience.

This view is unbeatable – there is no better view than one of the ocean!

The bathroom is also very special with its outdoor bath, antique fittings, exquisite toiletries and a glass exterior shower! To have a bath here – whether during the day or at night – unique!

MAIA Signature Villas

The Signature Villas are widely scattered in the tropical garden and some even have their own beach access.

They are perfect for families because they are connected by garden paths.

The villas are far apart, some also high on the hill – but one of the friendly buggy drivers will pick you up and drop you off again anytime.

Whatever. Whenever. Wherever.

The MAIA has a very special BEYOND ALL-INCLUSIVE concept – you can eat whatever you want, whenever and wherever you feel like doing so! Whether you would like to eat in the villa, on the beach or have a romantic dinner on the helicopter landing area – anything and everything is possible! You could even order breakfast in the afternoon. All your wishes are fulfilled and you can plan your time according to your own wishes. Just great!

Sunset Pool Bar

In the cozy Sunset Pool Bar there are, of course, delicious cocktails and everything else you could feel like eating and drinking. Everything is, of course, included, except for certain food and drinks that has a price tag. But, this only applies to the very expensive items.

Must try: Bartender Jeromo’s self-made rum with Passionfruit!

Tec-Tec Restaurant

In the open-air Tec-Tec restaurant you can choose between Mediterranean, Asian, Creole, Italian and Indian cuisine. And even if something is not on the menu, the staff do their best to accommodate individual requests.

Insider tip from the general manager, Lionel Ferrari: The pomelo salad with giant prawns and the Wagyu Beef burger – so delicious!

In the evening, everything is bathed in a completely different light – then it is really romantic here!

The whole ambiance is very relaxed, so romantic and the food top class. And since everyone can eat, whenever and wherever they want, it is never crowded. The concept is also great for couples with children, as they can opt to have dinner in their own villa.

Wine cellar
You can enjoy a private tasting in the glass wine boutique.

In Villa Dining

We also made use of this offer by enjoying breakfast in the villa with its magnificent view. Each villa has its own small kitchen and Delphi prepared us a great breakfast with freshly made egg dishes.

In the afternoon, after we had our treatments at the spa, a delicious lunch was already awaiting us in the villa. With Delfi, everything was just a call away! If you would like to, you can even enjoy your own barbecue in the villa!

Find some inner peace in the luxury spa

Great spa treatments make a holiday or get-away perfect. The MAIA Spa is definitely not to be missed! All therapists are from Indonesia and are trained in Balinese techniques.

The three beautifully designed open-air treatment rooms are embedded into nature and only separated by rocks. The ambiance is one of relaxation pure! Homemade massage oils and skin care products with a spa tradition going back over 2,000 years are used, for example, the Hungarian brand “Omorovicza”.

The pavilion where we got to enjoy our MAIA signature massage, even had its own small waterfall.

MAIA Signature massage
A unique fusion of consistent pressure, long strokes and gentle stretching, blended with a soothing rhythmical flow of delivery to ease muscle tension.

Spa Menu

FULL MOON MASSAGE (for couples)
This open air, restorative treatment takes place from MAIA’s highest vantage point, under the Full Moon’s enticing and ephemeral glow, and imbues a sense of calm and inner beauty.
(more info >>)

After a foot bath, our two therapists Karisna and Ari, gave us a wonderful massage and eased all those tense muscles. We asked for a “medium” pressure massage. Karisna told us afterwards, that after a “strong” pressure massage you feel like a new person in just a day or two. This then resembles the “Healing” massages we got to experience in Bali. Good to know!

As relaxing as the massage looks like – it feels even better! A Balinese massage with the right therapist, is in our opinion, the best massage in the world – the Balinese quite simply have it in their blood.

Morning Yoga and Qi Gong sessions are available free of charge.

Flourishing landscapes thanks to many green thumbs

The award-winning 30-hectare tropical garden at the MAIA Resort is the work of Head Gardener Allan Marguerite and his team. 18 gardeners take care of about 300 different species of exotic and endemic plants.

In the small vegetable gardens, you will find all kinds of herbs, bananas and papayas to name just a few.

CaranaBeach Hotel, Mahé, Seychelles – ocean themed elegance on a picturesque sandy beach

Chic beach boutique hotel in Creole style

This 4-star boutique hotel opened in 2016 and has 40 chalets. It is located in a quiet bay on the northeast coast of Mahe at Carana Beach. Our taxi driver immediately told us, that is one of the most beautiful and quiet beaches on the island.

The CaranaBeach Hotel belongs to the friendly Mason family and it is their third hotel. Mason’s Travel is the largest travel agency in the Seychelles. Recently, we have also had the privilege to visit the beautiful Denis Private Island on Denis Island and the “Indian Ocean Lodge” on Praslin. The three hotels are perfect for island hopping!

Here, you will find timeless, classy design mixed with traditional Creole island architecture and modern beach house style. Warm natural tones, the finest fabrics, neutral and modern colors as well as ocean themed decor elements ensure a cozy ambience. Style wise, it is similar to the tastefully designed, wonderful lodge on Denis Island.

“When you come to CaranaBeach you come to uncover the true island experience, where the Seychelles spirit awaits you.”

Pool

The large infinity pool is situated directly next to the bar and offers great ocean views.

Strand

The 150 m long secluded beach is for hotel guests only and therefore mostly deserted. It is framed by beautiful granite rocks on both sides. The waves are quite big as there is no reef here!

Chalets

All Ocean View Pool Chalets have sea views and are surrounded by rocks and beautiful tropical vegetation.

12 of the chalets (Ocean View Pool Chalets) also have their own plunge pools and Nespresso machines.

The modern touch can especially be seen in the bathrooms that are illuminated in cheerful purple.

Restaurant & Bar

The restaurant and the trendy bar right on the beach are not just very cozy, but also offer great food with stunning ocean views.

The chef, Darren Roberts, who hails from Australia was also in charge of the kitchen on Denis Island and his dishes are truly a culinary delight.

The Carana Beach Bar & Restaurant is open during the day and in the evenings. Here you get to enjoy snacks and cocktails in the fresh sea air.

Most of the ingredients are from Mike and Kathy Mason’s own farm on Denis Island where they keep some livestock such as guinea fowls, ducks, geese, pigs and cows.

Breakfast and dinner are served à la carte in the Lorizon restaurant.

Spa

The spa has two treatment rooms for massages and beauty treatments.

Honeymoon & Wedding

Honeymoon Offer

  • Up to 25% discount for the bridal couple
  • 1 Sundowner cocktail during your stay
  • Romantic Turndown service and a Honeymooner’s Indulge Experience
  • Romantic dinner plus a bottle of champagne when booking half-board

A minimum stay of 4 nights applies.

Wedding Package (from 675 EUR)
Includes fees, a marriage certificate, wedding decor, a bottle of champagne, a wedding cake and a romantic candlelight dinner on the beach for bride & groom.

Conclusion

The great secluded location on the beautiful beach is something special – beach feeling and pure relaxation! We were especially impressed with the bar! For a romantic, authentic and quiet Seychelles holiday, this hotel with its beautiful pool suites is highly recommended!

Our insider tip: Living Heritage Koslanda – Hidden jewel in the heart of Sri Lanka

Romantic boutique hotel with spectacular infinity pool in the mountains

This small boutique hotel is a real gem in the heart of Sri Lanka. It is located between the southern mountains of central Sri Lanka and is surrounded by picturesque tea and pepper plantations as well as waterfalls. It is the perfect stopover on the way from Nuwera Eliya to Yala.

It is hardly visible from the road. Our driver had to ask around first, before he found it. When we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the manager, Carrim. Here, you do not feel like you are a guest at hotel, but rather a guest in a private home.

The hotel is built and designed in typical Sri Lankan style. The beautiful architecture stems from the filmmaker, Manik Sandrasagra, in collaboration with the renowned Sri Lankan architect, Channa Daswatte.

There even is a pepper plantation on the 80-hectare property that also serves as an elephant corridor, as these gentle giants migrate over the property from June to August every year.

Infinity Pool

The absolute highlight is the amazing infinity pool! From here you have breath taking views of the surrounding mountains and tea plantations.

To reach the pool you have to go up a small hill, but it is absolutely worth it!

You can even order cocktails from there via your mobile phone.

At the heart of Sri Lanka with the Soul of Sri Lanka

Rooms

This small hotel has 4 romantic and rustic suites. Three suites are located in the main house next to the restaurant and another suite is located in a small cottage near the pool.

Luxury Villa Suites

The 3 Luxury Villa Suites have a communal veranda, their own patio and are equipped with antiques, outdoor plunge pools, en-suite bathrooms and open showers.

Pepper Garden Cottage Suite

We stayed in the small stone cottage with private garden and its own Ambalama (an open-air pavilion to relax in). The cottage is a bit tucked away, but has loads of privacy.

Two more rooms in the tent pavilion style are being planned! – All very exciting!

Restaurant

The rustic restaurant, with its open wooden pavilion pagoda-like roof, is particularly romantic in the evening when the lights are dimmed. The beautiful antique furniture and stone walls create a very cozy atmosphere.

Delicious Sri Lankan meals consisting of curries, rice and lots of vegetables are served. Everything is freshly cooked in a traditional wood-fired oven.

Tips for Trips

Hike to the waterfall
The idyllic walk through the jungle and through “God’s forest” to the waterfall is an absolute must. If you feel like it, you can also have a swim here. However, on the way there, you should be careful of the vast amounts of leeches! Shoes providing the proper protection up to your knees are available though. And you can easily get the leeches off with some salt water.

Buduruwagalas – Ancient, Buddhist temple with huge statues, the highest one being 16m
Tea factory and plantation visit
Kataragama – Holy city, whose temple is scared to four different faiths
Safari in the Udawalawe National Park

There is so much to be discovered here – or if you prefer, you can simply spend the day at the pool!

Conclusion

This place is pure relaxation – balm for the eyes and soul! Here you can just be – everything is very comfortable and the guests are lovingly taken care of. There were even a bunch of freshly picked flowers, when we had to say goodbye! Unfortunately, we were only here for one night – definitely too short!

The H Resort & Sesel Spa, Mahe Island, Seychelles – Tropical flair at Beau Vallon Beach

Paradise boutique beach resort in a top location

The H Resort Beau Vallon Beach, with the Morne Seychellois National Park on one side and the turquoise Indian Ocean on the other, opened its doors in August 2015. The 5-star boutique hotel has 7 restaurants and bars, 100 modern suites and villas, the award winning Sesel Spa and a great pool close to the ocean.

This stylish, “Small Luxury Hotel of the World”, is located in the north of Mahé, directly on a 3 km stretch of Beau Vallon Beach, one of Mahé’s most popular beaches and is a mere 15 minutes from the capital Victoria and 25 minutes from the airport.

The hotel’s exceptional design is inspired by the Montreal designer Andres Escobar and is a blend of Seychelles island and cozy colonial style. The Seychelles was discovered by Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese sailor, during his trip around Africa in 1502.

Tropical plants, open walls, natural colors, the finest fabrics, rounded wooden furniture, marine accessories, dark wooden floors and elegant rattan chairs, give the lounge, the restaurants, the suites and the villas a relaxed and quiet ambience amidst the natural surroundings.

Pool

The large pool landscape with countless sunbeds and private cabanas offers plenty of space.  However, as the hotel also caters for families, it can sometimes get a bit noisy.

The pool is situated almost directly on the beach, so you can easily jump into the ocean or just lie on one of the sunbeds on the beach.

It is a pity that you cannot see the ocean directly from the pool, but at least the natural habitat on the beach was preserved!

Suites & villas

All suites and villas have private balconies or terraces with day beds, stylish mini bars, luxury beds, free-standing bathtubs and cozy seating areas.  The colonial style design, the special furniture and the bathrooms, are very stylish and the decoration elements and accessories, especially in the villas, are exceptional.

Beach Pool Villa (14)
The 165 square metre villas, have large terraces, cabanas, outdoor showers, sun loungers and sea views.

Grand Beach Pool Villa (2)
The huge villas are 247 square metres in size and offer direct access to the beach, a separate living room, a pool with cabana, an outdoor rain shower and loads of privacy.

(Garden) Junior Suiten
All suites are 54 square metres and have day beds and a private balcony or terrace.  Of these suites, 38 are located in the garden and the other 46 are close to the beach.

Restaurants & Bars

VASCO`S
In the main restaurant, Vasco’s, which is named after the Portuguese sailor, you can enjoy a Mediterranean breakfast, lunch and dinner.  It is large, open-aired and cozy!  It serves international and Creole cuisine – very tasty and the selection is huge!

If you would like to, you can even make your own pizza, which is then freshly baked in the oven.

In the evenings, there are cool live music performances and dance shows.

It is also great spot to have breakfast as it is served on the beach or at the pool!

SEYSHIMA
This Japanese restaurant with its show kitchen offers Teppanyaki, Sushi and special cocktails.  The name is derived from the words “Sey” for Seychelles and “Shima” which is the Japanese term for island.

TRADER VIC´S
The famous Trader Vic’s, is not unique to the H Resort, but also found in many other cities.  It offers delicious French-Polynesian cuisine, exotic cocktails and live music in a very stylish atmosphere! (Menü)

Trader Vic’s is home to the original Mai Tai.

“You can have more fun with a flower behind your ear, a Mai Tai in your hand, and good friends.”

History & Romance at Beau-Vallon Beach

Le Meridien Fisherman’s Cove was the first hotel on Mahé and is located on one of the most beautiful beaches in the Seychelles – the picturesque Beau Vallon Beach. Since its construction in 1943, it has, of course, been renovated and renewed several times.

This boutique hotel has a charm all of its own: it offers unique experiences, has a wonderful seafood restaurant and a great pool right by the ocean. With its traditional thatched roofs and lush tropical gardens, it is stylish yet comfortable at the same time!

It is the only hotel with a pool right on the beach and it is quietly located at the end of the Beau Vallon Bay. From here you can watch the colorful hustle and bustle on the beach and enjoy the beautiful view of the ocean with a delicious cocktail in hand.

It is, of course, also nice to mix with the locals on the beach and swim or snorkel in the sea!

Zen Spa

The beautiful spa has two double massage rooms with outdoor showers, a gym, a steam bath and a plunge pool. The spa not only offers great massages such as Aromatherapy, Balinese, Swedish, Indian Head Massage, Back, Neck and Scalp Massage, Touch for Two and a Honeymoon Package (Honeymooners Celebration / 120 min), but one can even learn a few basic massage techniques  that you can then test on your partner at home (Massage Discovery)!

The à la carte seafood restaurant not only offers excellent service, divine Creole cuisine merged with French sophistication, but also a beautiful view of the ocean and the Beau Vallon Bay!

Le Bourgeois Menu

Since we first time came to the Seychelles, we both love Red Snapper! So, of course we had to try it here!

And it was the best Red Snapper we have ever had! Really magical – so tender – incredible!

Homemade Caramel Ice-Cream
Peanuts, Popcorn & Chocolate sauce (SCR 160 – approximately 11 EUR)

The design with its cozy rock walls, warm colors and great details is tasteful and romantic! Dinner at this restaurant is definitely not to be missed!

Restaurant Le Cardinal

The main restaurant offers breakfast with an ocean view and for dinner delicious Creole cuisine with themed buffets and live music.

As you can see, we visited the Seychelles in January during the rainy season. However, it mostly rained only briefly in the morning or at night, otherwise there was only radiant sunshine and it was nice and not overcrowded anywhere!

Le Domaine de L’Orangeraie & Eden Rock Spa, La Digue, Seychelles

Your home away from home

Yes, it is quite obvious that we are particularly fond of this hotel with its very tasteful design, the romantic tree houses, and its caring staff. After we had our dream wedding on the Anse Source d’Argent beach in 2012, we also celebrated our third anniversary here in 2015 and now, for the third time, we are once again visiting this wonderful and romantic boutique hotel on La Digue.

The crossing from Mahé takes about one hour by ferry. You can go directly with the Cat Cocos from Mahé to La Digue or you can stopover on Praslin and then continue with the Inter Island Ferry. This way the departure times are much more flexible! You can easily book the ferry tickets here. We definitely recommend the Upper Outside Deck – it’s airy, sunny and you will not get seasick in the back rows!

Many bridal couples, to whom I always recommend the Seychelles as a wonderful honeymoon destination, often ask if there is a lot to do. And the answer is, yes, most definitely!! We have been there three times and have just seen 5 of the 115 islands.

We are especially fond of La Digue – it just has a really relaxed flair! You quite simply cycle to the beach, lean your bicycle against a tree, without a lock, and enjoy the day at the beach! This is paradise!

Well, all right… this time our bicycle was no longer there one evening, but this is the exception in the otherwise safe paradise! And the return trip that came about in the loading area of a pickup truck was extremely cool!

Our “second home” in the Seychelles has expanded and changed somewhat since 2012, but it’s still gorgeous and there is something new to discover every time.

It is always great to see the staff again, even though our last visit has been over a year ago. And it is exactly these sincere and cheerful employees who make this hotel such a special place.

After being picked up with a golf cart at the jetty and greeted with a deep ceremonial gong, we were welcomed with delicious iced tea and warm smiles. Then it is simply a case of relax and enjoy. You are in paradise now and can forget about the hectic pace of everyday life!

The lobby with the Safran Boutique is brand new and very tastefully designed.

Infinity Pool

The pool with its poolside bar and beautiful ocean and sunset views is perfect for spending a relaxing day with cocktails and a good read.

The sunbeds are so comfortable!

Beach

The hotel’s own small private beach area has just been completely redesigned! It is not perfect for swimming and snorkeling, but great for sunbathing and relaxing! Plans for another bar that will be situated right on the beach are also well underway.

The Floating Dinner concept is brand new! What could be more romantic than dinner for two floating in the ocean? The platform is easily moved to the beach for ascent and for every course of dinner and then simply slowly floats out to sea again. This is unique in the Seychelles!

Villa de Charme

We fell in love with the Villa De Charme, the beautiful and romantic tree house built into the hillside, a few years ago! These villas are just so very romantic and unique! You even have beautiful ocean views from some of the villas, sometimes even from the bathtub!

The way to the upper villas definitely is easier down, than up! But you can also opt to be driven to your villa with one of the nimble golf carts at any time.

We loved everything about this villa! The design is timeless, cozy and absolutely tasteful!

A special highlight is the beautiful open bathroom with rain shower and bathtub.

Our tip for some romantic moments together: The In Villa Tchaba Bath that can be ordered at the spa.

Treat yourself with a wonderful bath experience in the privacy of your villa.
Our therapist are happy to create a most sensual and blissful experience.
A sensual mix will leave your skin radiant, soft and velvety.

In addition, the Villa de Charme Elegance also has a jacuzzi on the terrace. We stayed in one of the chic Garden Villas on our last visit (Review >>). The Presidential Villa, situated almost on top of the mountain, has several rooms and a private pool!

Eden Rock Spa

This exceptional spa was built right on and into the granite rocks. The view from the open treatment rooms is just spectacular!

And the treatments on offer by the very kind therapists are diverse and professional! Definitely not to be missed! (Spa Menu)

We were able to enjoy a wonderful Aromatherapy massage. It was amazing and wonderfully relaxing! The ambiance is simply magical!

The spa also has a steam bath and a jacuzzi.

Restaurants & Bars

Santosha Restaurant

The Santosha restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner. Creole and international cuisine is served.

The half-open restaurant with its outdoor terrace and the great ocean view is really cozy!

The various themed buffets, the Catch of the Day and the live cooking stations offer variety and such delicious food.

Unfortunately, more and more sand has disappeared from the restaurant since 2012. Today sand is only found in the last third of the restaurant. Such a pity, as we always enjoyed being able to eat with our feet in the sand. But then again, many women still find high heels important, even when in paradise!

Le Combava Restaurant

This romantic restaurant by the pool offers some of the finest á la carte dishes! Perfect for a special occasion!

Pool Bar

At the pool bar, you can also sit in the pool. Or you can enjoy the view or watch the sunset from the cozy seats on the terrace. The pool bar serves delicious cocktails or snacks all day long.

Alambic Bar

After sunset, you can let another day in paradise come to an end with a cocktail or a glass of wine in hand.

Honeymoon & Wedding

If you would like to get married at the famous Anse Source d’Argent beach in the Seychelles, you can spend your perfect wedding day and honeymoon in this hotel. There are various areas that are just perfect for romantic candlelight dinners and they always have a great Honeymoon Special to entice you.

Honeymoon Special
+  1 bottle of champagne and a fruit platter

from 5 nights:
+ 1x 30-minute manicure or pedicure for the bride
+ 1 romantic candlelight dinner for two in the a la carte Combava Restaurant consisting of a 3-course dinner, drinks not included.

Wedding Special
As mentioned above plus a 60-minute spa treatment per person/stay (from 5 nights)

This time we also accompanied another couple to their wedding day on the beach. The scenery with the huge granite rocks is simply incomparably beautiful and unique!

More pictures and the video of this beautiful wedding can be found here.

Conclusion

Ever since we got married here, we have lost our hearts to this hotel! It quite simply is very special! It radiates so much warmth and tranquility. One feels right at home here! We will certainly visit it more often! In our opinion, it is the most beautiful hotel on La Digue, if not in the Seychelles! And the bridal couple that we have just accompanied here absolutely shares our opinion! To them, their wedding in paradise was just as perfect, as ours was to us!

Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, Maldives – Luxury, Romance & Sea Turtles at an Eco Beach Hideaway (+ video)

“Kick of your shoes and get closer to nature.”

Well-being in harmony with nature – this 5-star Coco Collection resort is synonymous with absolute exclusivity and environmentally thoughtful luxury. It is located 124 km from Malé, in the north western Baa Atoll, where nature is still untouched in many places. Coco Palm can almost be called the wild sister of the chic Coco Bodu Hithi.

With the Olive Ridley Project and the Marine Turtle Rescue Centre they also make an important contribution to the protection of the sea turtles!

In addition to the many water sports you can also enjoy a movie night under the stars or visit the uninhabited island Embudhoo for picnics and overnight there. If you would like to, you can even have the whole island to yourself and get married there. How wildly romantic!

moniquedecaro-coco-dhuni-kolhu

It is about a 40 minute trip with a TMA seaplane from Malé Airport to the island.  This really is easy and relaxed flying. The pilots fly barefoot and sometimes there is a spontaneous stopover at another island.

I always thought that you would be taken directly to the island, but no, the plane lands next to a platform in the middle of the sea. From there, you travel by boat to the island. Very cool!

Where time stands still

The resort was built about 20 years ago and exudes a very special and original charm, through the beautiful wildness of nature, but most of all, through its very special employees!

Shameer from India welcomed and looked after us during our entire stay. What a cool guy! He even arranged for my sunglasses to be fished out of the depths of the ocean, but more about that later on!

Did you know that the sand around the Maldives moves around? This wide stretch of beach can for example be on the other side of the island in a few years.

At exactly 6 o’clock the sting-rays, sharks and a lot of other fish come to feed. How do they know when it’s time to eat again?

Of course there are also critical voices saying that they get too lazy to hunt themselves, but they like it. For years, they have been fed by one and the same employee, and they welcome him as a friend. They bumped into him, just as dogs would do. Cute!

Villas

The 98 villas in Maldivian style with their thatched roofs reflect the style of the region. They are carefully distributed all over the island and offer plenty of privacy and above all closeness to nature. Some have an open-air bathroom, a pool or are built on stilts. What do we like most? That there are no TV’s! Who needs a TV when you are on holiday and even more so when in paradise?! We definitely do not!

Deluxe Villas

We stayed in one of the Deluxe Villas, which was the first to be built on the island. It is hidden in the jungle and yet right on the beach. It has a great terrace with a day bed and the pool has the perfect depth of 1.50m.

Inside, there is a comfortable four poster bed and a chic chest of drawers with a mini-bar filled to the brim.

You also receive 2 complimentary large glass water bottles, which are refilled in the morning and in the evening with fresh Coco Water. The water is from the island’s desalination plant. Roughly 1 liter of drinking water is extracted from 5 liters of salt water.

The absolute highlight of this villa, besides the pool, is the open air bathroom! Such chic and extraordinary design!

After the construction of the first villa, No. 28, the design was changed. In our opinion, a real pity! Although the other Deluxe Villas have a different design, they are also very romantic! However, in the near future, some will gradually be rebuilt.

These villas also have a terrace with plunge pool, direct access to the ocean, a cozy four poster bed, a mini bar and an open bathroom!

There are also Ocean Front, Beach and Sunset Beach Villas.

The vegetation on the island is wild and natural. You find these little black-and-white birds and chameleons all over the island.

Lagoon Villas

If you prefer to live directly on the water, the Lagoon Villas are perfect. We liked both – you are either right on the beach or directly on the water!

The Lagoon Villas have a sun terrace, a plunge pool, a four poster bed, a mini bar and a large jacuzzi bath.

The Sunset Lagoon Villas are a bit larger, have a pool with glass bottom and offer plenty of privacy.

Restaurants & Bars

Conch Bar
In the Conch Bar you can enjoy the evening with wine, beer, cocktails and small snacks. Or you can listen to a talk by the resident marine biologist or to the locals chatting away.

Beach Bar
The beach bar has the perfect location to enjoy the sunset with a delicious sundowner in hand!

Cowrie Restaurant
The main restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are different themed evenings and a live cooking station.

The restaurant is quite big. If you prefer a more romantic setting, you can also book a private dinner on the beach or a private BBQ in your villa. We found the upper area with its comfy seating also quite cozy.

The buffet was always very lovingly arranged! One evening there even was tuna-sashimi – freshly caught and super delicious!

Cornus Restaurant
This restaurant offers Thai, Indian and Maldivian cuisine on certain days.

Beach BBQ Dinner

An especially romantic version of dinner is the beach BBQ right under the stars and with freshly grilled lobsters, crabs, pineapples, potatoes and so much more.

There are plenty of appetizers and desserts to choose from.

It was really the best lobster we have ever eaten so far. So fresh!

Coco Spa

The Coco Spa offers treatments from Bali, Thailand and India.

We had a wonderful Balinese massage – very professional and so relaxing! We simply loved the open treatment rooms. To be massaged with the twittering of birds in the background is amazing!

There is a separate treatment room for Thai massages and of course, there also is a fitness room.

Dolphin Whatching

We went on both the Dolphin Sunset Cruise in the evening and the Dolphin Sunrise Cruise in the morning. And although the chances of seeing dolphins are better in the morning, we also saw them in the evening on the Sunset Cruise.

We also had a really great guide, who saw them from afar!

And they came very close, because they like to swim along the bow of the boat. The boat makes underwater sounds, which they experience as pleasant and they like the bubbles that rise at the bow of the boat. In the evening there was also an Englishwoman on board who whistled softly the whole time. Perhaps she also lured them to the boat with her whistling. For we were told, the fishermen in the Maldives do the same. They attract the dolphins by whistling and in turn, by just being there, the dolphins help them to catch tuna.

The next morning on the Sunrise Cruise, I sat down at the bow all by myself and whistled softly. And then the dolphins came so close that I could actually hear them. It was almost like they were communicating with me! I do not know whether it was just coincidence or not – but I heard them “talking” – when they were swimming right beneath me. This was truly an unforgettable experience!

I have already swum with wild dolphins in Kenya and Mauritius, but they have never been this close before.

There were approximately 50 – 60 spinner dolphins. One of the hotel’s resident biologists was also on board and gladly answered all our questions.

The Sunset Cruise in the evening is quite romantic and while sipping on some sparkling wine you can watch the glowing sky.

When we returned to the island, the moon was already out, just as the sun was setting in the pink-and-purple ocean. Magical!

Water Sports

Catamaran sailing, water skiing and windsurfing are available. And if you want to go diving or learn how to dive, you can do so at the hotel’s PADI diving school. The nearby reefs are perfectly suitable for snorkeling and diving. Unfortunately, most of the coral has been destroyed through various environmental influences, but as a result there are now more fish found in the reefs. We also saw plenty of sea turtles here. And whoever feels like it, can even go swimming with mantas or stingrays.

Visits to the local village

We also visited a village on a nearby island with Shameer. We were even invited inside for a cup of tea by one of his friends. Really nice!

Previously people lived here in small thatched houses. Today, however, they also live in chic, colorful stone houses with every kind of comfort. Tourism and fishing offer the most job opportunities.

At the end of the tour, as I was about to get onto the boat, my sunglasses fell into the water at the docks. What a dilemma – without my sunglasses I could not see a thing in the glaring sun. But what could I do, other than buying a new pair of glasses, or so I thought at least. But not with Shameer! A few hours later, he returned with my sunglasses. He actually went back to the village with the diving instructor that then fished my sunglasses out of the water. How incredibly cool and caring is that?!

For the sake of the environment

Coco Palm has dedicated itself to preserving and protecting the environment, especially the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Coco Palm also tries to keep the human fingerprint as low as possible and supports the local Maldivian population.

Coco Palm is committed to preserving and developing the island of Dhuni Kolhu according to the principles of eco-tourism. We are an excellent example of how environmental sustainability and maintaining the cultural integrity of the Maldivian people can be cultivated in a 5-star resort.”

Group General Manager Anthony G. Paton has written a few basic principles about the protection of the environment for their guests. However, some of these, we should also take to heart, even when at home: Some Best Practices for our surroundings and the eco system

“We did not inherit our planet from our grand parents; we are simply borrowing it from our great grand children”

More info on the philosophy, the principles and how Coco Palm protects the environment, can be found here.

Marine Turtle Rescue Centre

With the help of donations and in cooperation with the Olive Ridley Project, a new marine turtle rescue center was being built under the guidance of marine biologist Claire Petros (more info). Now, injured sea turtles and those in need of care can be nursed back to health here.

When we were there, it was still under construction, but has now been finished and has just opened its doors.

We already met Claire on our flight there. She had a turtle with her on board that had one leg missing; apparently it was torn off by a shark. On the island, Claire lovingly took care of this small emaciated turtle.

In the Conch Bar Claire also held an interesting talk about the Olive Ridley Project. It is actually quite crazy when you hear how many fishing nets are lost in the ocean every year and how many marine animals get entangled and eventually die because of them.

You can help! Everyone should really pay particular attention to the tuna that they buy. In the Maldives, tuna is still caught using the one-by-one method with only a pole and line. If you only buy sustainably caught fish, you can play a small part in the preservation of marine animals even when you are back at home.

A further contribution to the protection of the environment:  vegetables, spices and herbs are all grown on the island’s own small farm.

And even some the furniture is manufactured locally in the carpenter’s workshop and by hand.

The managers and the employees put their hearts and souls into what they do and that gives this eco resort that certain something! Their commitment to nature is also commendable – we learned so much here and also met such passionate people. It was not just a holiday, but a great experience that has left its mark, also in our hearts.

Coco Bodu Hithi, Maldives – an exclusive Eco Beach Resort for Connoisseurs (+ video)

“Rediscover Life´s Beauty” in the North Male Atoll

The Maldives consists of 1190 islands and on one of these small islands in the North Malé or Kaafu Atoll you will find the luxurious Coco Bodu Hithi. Romance is very important at this local family run Coco Collection resort.  Furthermore, the ingenious design concept embraces a respectful interaction with nature.

All 100 villas have their own swimming pool. There are 7 restaurants, numerous water activities and a great spa over the water. It is one of the most exclusive resorts in the Maldives.

The Maldivian hotel group Coco Collection was created in 2007 as a subsidiary of Sunland Hotels & Resorts by the Maldivian founder Mr. Shabeer. Since then the Coco Collection has become synonymous with stylish, sophisticated and sustainable holidays. The trip by speedboat from the Malé airport takes just 35 min.

Pool

The huge infinity pool is located directly on the sea and next to the main restaurant Air and the Latitude bar.

Villen

Coco Residences
The 24 Coco Residences are close to the island, yet secluded through the long footbridge. There is a private beach, a reception area with a lounge and a restaurant, Stars, with a bar.

The island is small, but if you want to walk from the Coco Residences to the other restaurants, it takes about 10 – 15 minutes.  It’s much faster with one of the golf carts!

The Coco Residences are the largest villas on the island with 184 square metres. They all have a living room, a bedroom, a large bathroom with shower and bath, a dressing area, a minibar with a wine cabinet and a huge terrace with daybed, dining area and pool.

The view of the sea, even from your bed, is just beautiful! If you love beautiful ocean views, these villas are just perfect for you. If you prefer to stay directly on the beach, there are also villas on the island situated directly on the beach.

This grey heron also liked our pool!

(Escape) Water Villas
On the other side of the island, above the lagoon, are another 16 Water Villas, 188 square metres in size each with their own pool, designer bath and great views. There are also another 16 Escape Water Villas, each a 144 square metres with double bath, pool and separate living room.

Island Villas
The villas on the island, 109 square metres in size each has a huge round bathtub, a pool and direct beach access. If you prefer to stay directly on the beach, this is the right choice for you.

Coco Privé
If you would like to be all alone, you can directly book yourself a whole island! It is located almost directly opposite the Coco Residences and has every imaginable luxury.  It is available from $ 45,000 per night. www.cocoprive.com

Restaurants

With such a variety of restaurants there is something for everyone. From buffet meals to á la carte, or from sushi to fresh fish and delicious pizza, no wish is left unfulfilled. The food really is so delicious!

Air
This is the main restaurant and it is situated right next to the infinity pool. It offers typical local dishes and international specialties for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  You also have the choice of à la carte or buffet meals.

Latitude
The cocktail bar right next to the infinity pool offers a wide selection of wines, snacks, soft drinks and exciting cocktails.

Aqua
This wonderful restaurant is located right over the water and is perfect for romantic dinners! Aqua serves innovative Asian cuisine by combining the finest local ingredients including freshly caught seafood. The individual tables are evenly spread out, so that it is even more exclusive and private.

Usually, I do not eat tuna – as too many fishing nets are lost at sea and too many other animals, such as dolphins and turtles are killed. 640,000 tons of fishing nets have already been lost at sea – imagine that! But, fortunately, it is different in the Maldives – here tuna is still caught using the one-by-one method:  1 man, 1 pole, 1 fish!

The tuna tartare in Air is the Balinese chef, I Wayan Sundira’s and the Greek General Manager, Georgios Papazoglou’s absolute favorite – so I simply had to try it! And it was a dream!

Fresh local Tuna Tartar, Truffle Chipotle Chilli Sauce,
Salmon Roe and crispy Tortilla

Ingredients for a single serving
100g fresh tuna (make sure that it was caught in the Maldives), 10g white of a boiled egg, 5g onion, 15ml lemon juice, 10g red pepper, 5g miso paste, 10ml truffle oil, 10ml Kikkoman soy sauce, 5g chipotle chilli powder, finely chopped lettuce , 30g crispy tortilla, 5g salmon

Preparation

  • Cut the tuna into cubes and place in a bowl. Add all the other ingredients except the lettuce and the tortilla
  • Mix carefully and then gently press into a ring shaped mold.
  • Remove the ring and garnish on a plate with lettuce and salmon roe
  • Serve with the crispy tortillas

Breeze
Another romantic option where you dine under the stars directly on the beach. The Breeze Beach BBQ is available at $ 135 per person.

The Stars
The bar and restaurant, The Stars, are located right next to the Coco Residences and offers an à la carte breakfast, delicious cocktails and Asian fusion cuisine with fresh seasonal ingredients.

Tsuki
Tsuki is located on the first floor of Latitude and serves traditional Japanese specialties such as sushi, sashimi and maki.

Beach

Life is better in flip flops.

(Water) Activities

Every day something different is offered. We were lucky enough to be there on a Tuesday when the manager’s cocktail is served on the beach.

General Manager´s Cocktail
Cocktails and canapés on the beach at sunset with live music from a band – life can hardly get any better! This way you also can get to know the managers and maybe even meet other guests.

On other days you can for example, also join a sunset cruise, snorkel or dive with turtles or manta rays or try your luck at Morning Fishing, have a picnic on a sandbank, watch the traditional drummers and dancers in the Boduberu show or enjoy watching a movie under the stars on the beach.

The excursions take place under guidance of the hotel’s own marine biologist and of course you can also go diving and there is plenty of other water sports equipment.

Coco Spa

A visit to this award winning spa should not be missed! Of all the spas that we have visited on our travels so far, the Coco Spa definitely is on our Top 5 Spas of the world list.

You can choose between traditional treatments from Indonesia, Thailand and India. Facials, massage rituals, beautifying body therapies and yoga are also offered.

We can highly recommend the Balinese massage! Just awesome! It is only $ 199 for 50 minutes for 2 people.

Honeymoon & Wedding

Honeymooners on the Maldives get spoiled. Some special extras are included for example a candle light dinner, a bottle of champagne and so on. Just like in Mauritius and the Seychelles honeymooners also qualify for a special Honeymoon discount at Coco Resorts.

Honeymoon Special
25 % discount on the accommodation price

    • Cocktail reception, sparkling champagne, fruit platter, romantic bed decoration, romantic 3-course candlelight dinner, 10% discount on all spa treatments, Coco Gift
    • Champagne breakfast in your villa when staying at Coco Residence
    • (Mit Frühbucherrabatt kombinierbar.)

The honeymoon special, can also be combined with early booking discounts.

Valentine’s Day Special
Couple Treatments at Coco Spa for $ 300 per couple for 90 minutes, romantic 5-course candle light dinner on the beach for only $ 145 per person, private movie night on the beach at $ 180 per couple and so much more. (more info)

“Wedding” oder “Renewal of vows” Package from USD 2500
Spa treatments for the bride and groom, traditional Bodu Beru drummers performance, photographer, bouquet for the bride, wedding cake, sunset cruise with champagne and canapés, breakfast in the villa and more (more info)

For the sake of the environment

Unfortunately, due to heavy storms and excessively high temperatures in recent years, up to 90% of the corals on the Maldives have been damaged.  And every day, a lot of plastic waste is washed up on the beach. The Coco Collection does a lot to protect the animals and preserve the environment! (Sustainability Report 2016)

“Eco friendly” measures and initiatives by the hotel

  • The hotel emphasises to guests in various different ways just how important it is to protect the marine life and the environment
  • In the villas you will find Green Bags, that guests can use to take their plastic waste home with them where there are better opportunities to recycle these.
  • Reuse of treated waste water to save energy
  • Use of LED bulbs to save energy
  • Rainwater is collected and used for the generator
  • Regular island and reef clean-up operations by the entire Coco Bodu Hithi Team
  • Paper napkins are not used, only self-made  cloth napkins
  • and many other initiatives

Marine Biology Centre

  • Supporting the Olive Ridley Projects in the fight against ghost nets in the Indian Ocean
  • Active collection of the so-called ghost nets as well as providing training for the team
  • Education programmes for guests and staff about turtles, manta rays, sharks and plastic waste pollution
  • Building of a Turtle Rescue Station
  • Building a coral nursery by using recycled iron bars
  • Environmental Education Events  such as Earth Hour, Earth Day, World Ocean Day, World Sea Turtle Day and so on
  • Coral transplants
  • and many other initiatives

How can you help?
When you buy tuna, you should pay attention to how and where it was caught. About 22% of tuna is caught in the Indian Ocean and in the Maldives specifically, only with pole and line.  Make sure that the tuna you buy was caught in the Maldives. If you are uncertain, you can visit the International Pole & Line Foundation website to find out which fishing technique is used.

If you need a new T-shirt or jacket Fourth Element makes clothing from ghost net material.

You can find out more by visiting the Coco Collection blog COCO CARES!

Conclusion

Island life is just wonderful and romantic! We loved our water villa and were sad to leave this piece of paradise! And although it is very luxurious and exclusive, the atmosphere in the hotel is really relaxed and casual! The service is very personal, friendly and simply perfect. Here you can just sit back, relax and enjoy.

Chena Huts by Uga Escapes, Yala, Sri Lanka – Wilderness, Luxury, Leopards & Ocean (+ Video)

Asia meets Africa – A Safari Lodge with WOW factor

Directly on the ocean, listening to the roaring waves, splashing in the villa’s own pool, enjoying the best curry and maybe even seeing elephants pass by… this is Chena Huts!

Chena Huts by Uga Escapes is situated on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka and was definitely the highlight of our Sri Lanka tour! This small luxury boutique hotel is located directly on the ocean, has a restaurant, pool, spa and 14 villas each with their own private pool.

Chena Huts belongs to the renowned Sri Lankan group Uga Escapes and is the first luxury safari lodge in Sri Lanka. It directly borders Yala National Park, the oldest national park in Sri Lanka.

We were welcomed warmly and greeted with the hotel’s unique welcome ritual: Each guest places their country’s flag next to the “welcome” written in their home language. So you immediately know where all the guests are from.

Pavilions

The 14 luxurious detached guest cabins, each 105 square meters in size, are evenly distributed in the coastal jungle and offer plenty of privacy, peace and comfort.

Wooden walkways connect the cabins with the restaurant, the swimming pool and the spa.

The spacious “huts” perfectly blend into their natural surroundings. Each cabin is hidden in the dense thorn tree jungle, has a terrace with a 5m private pool and views of the wilderness, the lake landscape or the ocean.

The African safari style pavilions are decorated with rustic lamps, warm colors and lots of wood. Very comfortable and modern!

The focal point is the comfortable bed with stylish fan that is shaped like a lotus blossom just like the Uga Escapes logo.

Behind the bed is an open bathroom with a freestanding bathtub and very stylish wash basins. It has the feel of a safari lodge in South Africa.

I especially liked the African kerosene lanterns! So beautiful!

There is also a 42 “LED TV, a mini bar, a variety of tea and a small Nespresso coffee machine.

Beach

Unfortunately, you cannot swim in the ocean here, due to strong currents, but just being at the beach, is already wonderful!

moniquedecaro-chena-huts-004.jpg

And since there are no fences, you can also encounter some wild animals. Not too worry though, the rangers look after guests!

Interview with Manager Roshan De Silva

General Manager Roshan De Silva comes from Sri Lanka and runs the hotel with a lot of heart. He is also a strong supporter of nature conservation and animal welfare!

Sri Lanka has an ingenious water storage system that was created thousands of years ago by its kings. But if it rains too little, even these lakes run dry. When we visited Sri Lanka in January, it has unfortunately, not rained as much as it actually should have.  The lakes were almost dry. That is also why General Manager Roshan is so committed to animal welfare and nature conservation.  He tries to fill the lakes by buying water with the help of donations ($ 50 for 1 ton of water) as this is the only way to ensure that the animals will have water.

moniquedecaro-chena-huts.jpg

Pool

Although each villa has its own pool, there is also a large pool.

No filter – everything turns this pink in the early evening!

Restaurant “Basses” & Bar

Based on the principle: simply sit back and enjoy everything is included at Chena Huts – breakfast, lunch, dinner, soft drinks, cocktails and all other drinks.

The restaurant is named after the lighthouse, which is very close by.

Fruit and vegetables come from a nearby farm and the rice is planted in Ulagalla, another Uga Escapes hotel. It is all very fresh and really healthy!

You have the choice of either dining inside in an air-conditioned area or enjoy the ocean views outside.

There even is a pizza oven. A highlight for children – they get to bake their own pizza.

Fresh fruit juice for breakfast and lunch and delicious cocktails for dinner are available from the guys at the bar.

Breakfast

The à la carte breakfast is delicious! You try to taste as many dishes as possible and tend to eat much more than you actually can.

Lunch

We also met Holger, the German Chef at Uga Escapes Hotels. He commutes between the Uga hotels and is responsible for the respective kitchens there. And he does an excellent job – everything was so appetizing. Nice and spicy, but very tasty! Of course, there are also dishes that are not spicy at all!

Dinner

It is so romantic here in the evening!

After a great aperitif a delicious 4-course menu is served!

On special occasions, it is also possible to enjoy a romantic dinner for two right on the beach.

Safari at Yala National Park

Of course you will not see as many animals as in Africa when on safari in Yala National Park, but there are plenty of elephants, buffaloes, crocodiles, monkeys and birds. And the chances of seeing a leopard are quite high in the national park with the highest leopard population density in the world!

Safaris start in the afternoon or very early in the morning.

We have never seen so many kingfishers as here in Sri Lanka. They are simply beautiful!

Our ranger Vidupa and rider Suresh tried their best to find us a leopard. Even the monkeys helped when they raised their alarm.

There he was – the leopard! Although far away – but still, simply seeing this majestic animal from afar is already an experience!

Spa

The spa offers massages and beauty treatments. Unfortunately, we did not have enough time to indulge in any treatments, but it looked amazing! Spa Brochüre

Cooking Class

The cuisine in Sri Lanka is very delicious, spicy and fresh. Our Cooking Class with Holger was a great opportunity to be introduced to some of the local cooking skills.

I love the Dhal Curry (lentil curry)! And we were shown exactly how to cook dhal and chicken curry. The spicy versions! If you prefer a milder curry, it can be served with coconut milk or yoghurt.

In Sri Lanka, spices, such as curry, chilli and so on are first fried to release their full flavour. A very important ingredient in the local cuisine is curry leaves. Unfortunately it is not freshly available in Germany. These leaves give Sri Lankan and Indian dishes their distinctive taste!

Recipes: Dhal Curry | Chicken Curry

Of course, dishes that are prepared during class can also be enjoyed afterwards!

Conclusion

Chena Huts is a beautiful secluded oasis of tranquility – right on the ocean. The staff is so friendly and the service very personal (which is, unfortunately, quite rare in Sri Lanka). We really felt right at home in this small jewel of Uga Escapes. It was hard to leave this beautiful and exclusive hotel. The pavilions are very stylish, cozy and luxurious. The food is delicious and the all-inclusive concept is great! In our opinion, it was the nicest hotel in Sri Lanka!
